Yeah, my connection just goes bonkers. Sometimes I can't log in at all for hours at a time, other times I'm logged in but when I go to a different page/ site I get 'server not found' as my connection has been broken ... again.

I wish I could tell you things will be better. The problem as I understand it, is that when it overheats, things literally warp and some may even char. If you looked inside you might possibly even find scorch marks. Once that kind of damage is done, it doesn't reverse itself. (I say that from experience.)

Be prepared to get a new system at some point.

I know you mentioned you have all your stories as hard-copy. So if you've rescued everything off your thing that you know you'll want and need, when it gives up completely you'll be in good shape.

It's a good thing you get outside and get some sunshine whenever possible. Vitamin D is so important!

And thinking back to where you used to live... some dark, dank hole ... now you are warm and dry and your landlady doesn't hate you. That's a huge step in the right direction!

Got the back corner of my neighbor's garage propped up for the season with a solid pole jack and some temporary braces screwed in. We could have 30" of snow on top of it and it's not going anywhere now.

His father in law was there this morning to install a new service door too. That ended up being a much larger project than he thought it would be going into it (like everything always is), but we got it in there good now. Come spring time, I'm going to go back and replace a few of the other plates that are bad for them too.

My prognosis is that the garage will be fine and we got to it just in time.




I wasn't expecting nothing for it, but they gave me a gift card. A brand new one in cardboard with the sticker still on it. They didn't tell me what's on it and I didn't ask. Maybe it's a nice surprise?



Time to enjoy doing nothing for the next 40 hours.

But in the meantime they're going to give me a beta-blocker which supposedly make the heart less reactive to adrenaline, and the even better news is that there's no problem with me doing even heavy-duty (for me) yardwork even if I feel shitty bc I won't be damaging my heart. In fact, they encouraged me to get aerobic exercise because that also re-sets the heart's response to adrenaline.

I've set aside the backyard winter veggie garden for now, since it was so terribly delayed, and put the seeds in the frig where they'll keep better, and focus on finishing the front yard so that it doesn't require so much work ... ie, eventually getting to the final step of putting down weed seed preventer and mulch, but I have many steps to do before that.

But still... as I sit at the table and contemplate the upcoming next few days ... I don't have a schedule jammed from AM to PM, with nothing (it seems) to show for all of the busy-ness.

This is one of the biggest potential pitfalls about getting contracted work done on your place, sadly, and why I'm really thankful that most of the stuff I can do on my own already or figure it out...

The inclination is to shop around until you get the lowest price. A lot of times that will actually work out well for you. But many times the lowest price is either because of a lack of experience on the part of the contractor, and not necessarily that they're shady or purposefully cut corners. They under bid. They put themselves in a position where they would hardly make any money even if everything works out 100% perfect (which it never does).

Unless Canada's laws are different, your boss probably doesn't have a case and he's wasting his own time and money here. If I were the contractor I'd just walk away from the job completely at this point and leave your boss with busted out walls and let him pay somebody else to do whatever he wants done now that it's all exposed.

Yeah... That's kind of a human problem in general, but having done quite a bit of contract work for other people in my life and knowing a few mechanics and what they go through, I think when it comes to houses and cars people that are prone to pretend they know more than they actually do are really going to try to assert themselves in this situation. Usually, a pretty good deal of money is on the table regarding these things. And there are plenty of shady mechanics and contractors out there that have put everybody in the position of basically being guilty until proven innocent.

The remedy to that is what I said earlier. I'd just walk away from the job and let him find somebody else who will do the work for him and deal with it. There is always the next job, and most people aren't going to behave like this. I feel for those contractors.

And now I feel for them too. Owning a house isn't easy. It's not cheap either, especially if you're not going to invest the time and money necessary to figure out that 99% of the problems you can fix on your own without paying somebody else to do it. It's not rocket science.

Yeah... That's just awful. I always tell customers that they'll have to talk to the boss when he gets there. I'm not paid to deal with that. I don't let anybody do that to me anymore. I just quit and find something else if it happens. I'm nobody's doormat, and I certainly won't let somebody who drives around a nice new car talk down like they're somehow better than me because of that fact.
