And althoguh I haven't had a mouse problem in a few years and I'm fully armed to take care of any activity immediately upon knowing about it in the future, behind that stove was always a hotbed of activity when I did have mice because I would hear metal "clanking". I think it was probably the flex tube from the gas being banged around when they were back there.


Last thing I did today was move the stove from the wall, and I was mortified. I'm not even going to tell you what's back there. I'm also not even going to clean it up tonight.

I think I'll go take a shower, wash my clothes, pack my bags and burn the house down.

Uggggghhhh....



But really... That's been back there for god knows how long now. It can last one more night and I'll make sure to start the day tomorrow with the proper hazmat gear before the sanitation process commences.



Honestly... Who tiles in a stove so you can't move it?

I'm not recommending these, they were literally just the first picture.

duck-duck: appliance roller glider OR appliance roller wheels OR similar terms till you get what you're looking for.

If you're going to do real tile (stone, brick, ceramic, cement) not faux(vinyl) tile, and you want to later move the appliance, you may need to put down some masonite on the path; because I can imagine that the weight concentrated by the wheels might crack the tile. Also, here in SoCal, I got them with locking wheels in case of earthquakes, but I can see how it might be useful in general to keep things from shifting around if you lean on them or some such.

I got you beat. The first REAL apartment that we moved into (student housing) had apparently been rented to a succession of Indian (from India) male grad students who liked to cook with lots of grease at high temperatures. LOTS of grease. HIGH temperatures.

When we moved in, I literally had to scrape the grease off the cupboards with a paint scraper, and they were continuous peels of grease, not little-bitty nibbles. Also, paint came off of the (metal) cabinets along with the grease, because the grease was such a good solvent.

When I moved the stove out, the floor (which was genuine linoleum) had been so saturated with oil it literally came up like putty. When I realized I was scraping flooring as well as grease, I stopped right there and switched to floor cleaner, just ot get most of the crud off while preserving the flooring. At that point I decided never to look under the stove again.

Then I had to scrub the entire ceiling and walls, which ... it turns out ... were NOT brown, but pale blue. But since I couldn't wash ALL of the grime off evenly, of course I had to repaint everthing. Twice.

Even with all of the scraping, scrubbing, and painting, every time it rained for a year afterwards, the kitchen smelled like curry.

KIKI: I'm so glad you called your doc! If you hadn't mentioned it, I was going to suggest it tomorrow. AND I'M SO GLAD YOU THOUGHT TO DO WHAT YOU DID!

I was thinking that though sinuses aren't "seen" very well by the body in terms of immune response, they're awfully close to the brain in terms of cytokines.

And I'M SO HAPPY FOR YOU THAT YOU CAN SMELL AGAIN!

I'm loving how the kitchen looks. It's crazy that with all the doors down, the cabinets stripped, the floor taken up and the subfloor cleaned up how much nicer the kitchen already looks than before I did any of that work. It was REALLY bad. Should be huge motivation to finish the rest of the house when I finally have a beautiful kitchen instead of what I used to have. I've had better kitchens in some dumpy apartments over the years.

Got all my hardware and the tools I ordered, so that's all ready when I get to that point. Although I should have bought two clamps for the jig. I thought I only needed one, but watching a DIY video the guy used two. I have other clamps in my garage, but none of them have rubber stoppers to protect the wood. I could do something about that, but it might just be more efficient to go to the store and pick up another one.


Not going to do much today except for clean up my living room and start moving more stuff out of there into my 2nd bedroom upstairs so I can work on both the kitchen and living room at the same time.

Then I have to make sure my tablet is charged up so I can throw an album together of the work I've done. My old man is here quite often when we go visit my brother, but my step-mom and brother haven't been here for years, and the house was so bad overall back then that I only really had people over for a BBQ outside.

It's funny, every time I try to put something up ... mailboxes, shelves,
posters... they always droop to the right. Must have something to do with my eyes being very VERY different in terms of lens correction. I need a spirit level. I refuse to put anything up without it.

You only get a little bit of angle play to work with, which won't cover up anything but the most superficially incorrect placements. The screws for pushing the door out from the cabinet are great though. The door initially did just a tiny scrape of the cabinet when you'd open it at first, but about 1/2 of a turn of the screws and it's smooth sailing.

Now that I have all of that set up on my jig, I'll probably prep all of the doors for hinges first, and then sand all the doors and shelving before I put up all the plastic upstairs and do the cabinets.

Ha! I know the feeling!

I was tempted to stay in bed a lot longer than I already had, but puppy wuppy was anxious for her walk/ potty break, so I had to drag my butt out whether I wanted to or not.

But it wound up being a productive day. Hubby and I still have to install the new modem and router from our cable company, but his allergies were so bad from crawling around on the floor yesterday getting the power cables untangled that he decided to put it off for one more day, so I set dear daughter up with the weed sprayer while I hacked down about a third of a bird of paradise that was taking over the front garden and binned up the Xmas tree. Then I ran out of bin space. Also cooked a pork roast half for dinner today and the other half frozen, cut up three chickens for freezing and cooked the carcasses to make broth and pick the meat off the bones for puppy wuppy.

So now I have pork and chicken broth, one for ham and bean soup and the other for chicken and dumplings.
