True. But to be honest, I don't actually think there was a time that it's ever looked worse than it started during the process. It really was one of the ugliest kitchens you've ever seen, and that's even after I removed the horrible French Chef motif the first year I lived here. Taking the doors off was an improvement because the hardware was so tacky and dated and dirty. Exposing the sub-floor was actually an improvement because of how beat up the vinyl tiles were. Taking the wrought iron barrier off the overlook to the basement was an improvement because wrought iron looks terrible inside any house.

I'm just happy to have everything back against the wall so I can make a pot of coffee and clean my paint brushes without fully extending myself over the dishwasher. Speaking of which... I'm going to have to wash dishes today. They've been neglected since all of this stuff has been pulled out.

Ugggggggg.....

Cold, cold, cold in my house today.

Wind chill below 20 for the next three nights. Snow nearly every day for the next week. I didn't even know it snowed when it got this cold.

If they don't keep pushing it back, the snow should at least have a chance to start melting a bit in between snowstorms when the temps get back into the 30's.

So I took my big guy Mr E to the vet today because he's been shaking his head, scratching his ears, and at times tipping his head. And the vet gave him the all-clear, but he's still doing all those things. So, if this is due to allergies, I looked up Benadryl for cats. And I hope to go to the store tomorrow and get liquid Benadryl, and dose him with a 2mg dose, which is about half the standard feline dose. Hmm. Maybe I'll put that off till Monday, since vets are closed on Sunday and emergency vet care is hugely expensive, just in case he has an untoward reaction.

Yup, that is a big relief. No waiting on buses and hauling things up and down hills.

Well, boots to keep feet dry and warm. Cane just for safety sake. Didn't know if there was any ice under the snow or just on the side walk around the gas station my apartment building is near.

Ya know, I didn't even know that you had a cat until after I said that dogs are great pets and cats are shitty pets for lazy people, regarding the transmission of the-virus-that-shall-not-be-named-in-the-garden. It doesn't change the fact that if dogs can get it, it will fairly easily spread everywhere, but I'm sorry if that's what caused our current animosity. Just because I believe cats don't make good pets, I shouldn't have insulted everyone who owns one when I don't know who I talk to that does.

Hope he gets better. I know how hard it is to lose a pet.

Outside of some paperwork, I had a do-nothing Saturday yesterday. Being more or less snowed in with the frigid temps is really starting to take a toll. Hoping to get in a better headspace today.

Looks like we could have anywhere between 9 to 18 inches of snow now over the next 72 hours. It seriously just won't stop, and it hasn't been warm enough to melt any of the existing snow since we had that first 16 inches what... a few weeks ago now?

At least it looks like they might have stopped pushing the first 30 degree day back now. It kept being the last day on the 10 day forecast for about a week, but now it looks to have settled on the 21st, with every day after that maintaining a high of at least 30 and slowly creeping into the 40's a few weeks forward.

Man... does it look like we're going to start the season off with a TON of rain though. I'd better make sure there's nothing on the floor in case my temporary patches don't hold with the new gutters up, and get ready to move my painting into the garage. I might even have to put the painting on hold for a while if the basement floods again since it's really going to be too cold to paint outside until around mid-March.

It's a good thing I got the weed spraying done yesterday because today is way too breezy.

You're right, SIX, this is WAR. I'm looking forward to those weeds dying.

KIKI: a word of advice- unless you can schedule a torching when weed sprouts are very small, you're better off spraying, because if some kinds of weeds (and most grasses) establish any kind of root system at all they'll just resprout. Plus you need to torch after every rain.

In my yard, I have the Bermuda grass on the run thru putting up a root barrier between my yard and the neighbor's plus diligent digging, but what I'm dealing with now is a whole vigorous crop of crabgrass, a couple of other grasses I can't ID, the various kinds of dandelion-like broadleaf weeds, spurge, yellow clover, burr medic (PAINFUL if you let it set seed!), filaree, pineapple weed, oxalis, spurge ... I've got them all!

But putting out my intentional plants in 3-6 gallon pots is working GREAT! That allows me to spot-water the yard, and I can spray right up to the pot and not catch the perennials. (I left a 2" lip sticking up). So the only places I actually need to hand-weed are just inside the pots themselves, plus the areas where I have my desired plants directly in the ground.

I'll let you know how the mulching goes. Since most natives don't appreciate mulch right at the crown, I'll be mulching the walkways deeply but the planted areas not so much. To be continued ...

I haven't seen a sunset in who knows how long?

6 more days and this crap should start melting. From the looks of it, today should be the last day with a high in the single digits, although we've got a few more nights dipping below zero.

Now they're giving us a 45% chance of 4 to 8 inches by Tuesday night, and a 51% chance of 8 to 12 inches. Here's hoping we get lucky for the first time in a month.

Got the 4th batch of stuff finished with the priming today. Just need to scuff sand it and cover it tomorrow. I wasn't able to get enough to have a full 5th batch ready to go. Still too cold to finish stripping the three things I have in the garage until next week, and the only two things I have left to prep in the house is a drawer and the "wall" between the stove and the dish washer. Made a bit of progress on that wall after finishing prepping the broken door that I glued, but decided to wrap it up before I finished it. I wanted to grout those two tiles, which I did manage to do.

I also spent a stupid amount of time fabricating some circular covers out of a flat plastic piece that came out of the scanner bed of the printer. After using hole saws to make the cuts as gingerly as I could, I had to spend a lot of time filing them down and then sanding them down smooth. These will be used to cap off the holes necessary to put the electric into the cabinet above the stove for the range and the microwave, as well as the holes needed to get the plugs in there to the outlet.

I probably could have bought something similar, but I wanted to try it out for myself and I'm very pleased with the results.

Yeah Signy, torching is not so much an option for me. I have too many fallen leaves that I really want to keep, and I most assuredly don't want to be starting any fires! All that to say which is why eventually I'll be going with roto-tillering (which will also allow me to rake the yard smooth and level as well), corn gluten, and deep, deep horse-bedding pine-shaving mulch. At one point I did deeply mulch half my front yard (the half with many large trees) with pine-shaving horse bedding, and it worked surprisingly well for perhaps 5 or 6 years at keeping the weeds down. Even better, after a few days the pine shavings actually formed a crust which kept them from blowing all over the place, but it was coarse enough to still let water and air through. So I already have some experience with generic deep mulching and specifically pine shavings working well.

I hope you have as good an experience as I did!

Over the years I've fostered for adoption probably well over a dozen feral kittens and adopted 6 additional ones including the latest Einstein (because he's scary smart - he's figured out how to open every door in the house, as someone once mentioned, it's a good thing he doesn't have thumbs); and fostered 3 homeless fully grown dogs and adopted 1. The other 2 I got all vetted and cleaned-up and happy to be with people (including one that looked to be half coyote, I appropriately named her Coyote), and then took them to a no-kill shelter where they were adopted in no time.

But I only adopted the one dog who was my first one, because my work schedule changed, and I was away from home 12 hours a day, and it didn't seem fair to leave a dog alone for that long.

And between all the previous fostered and adopted dogs and cats, and this cat, I was diagnosed with many, many allergies including to dogs and cats, so I refrained. But I made an exception for this cat despite my allergies because he had so MANY medical problems, I couldn't imagine anyone else giving him the $$$ care he needed.

But my doctor has warned me - no more pets.

Anyway Mr E aka The Big Guy is now my sole pet and I like to think he's now comfortable and happy, and healthy according to the vet, with a good sounding heart and no asthma recurrence, no more visible seizures since he was a kitten, and his gut problems under control ... with the exception of his chronic hairball problem, and perhaps ear itchiness due to allergies.

So far, so good for him; knock on wood.

The flakes got bigger as the afternoon wore on then around suppertime it started to rain and still is. But suppose to change back to snow by tomorrow morning with the majority of it heading out to the Fraser Valley. Then sunny on Tuesday changing to rain for the rest of the week.

Thawing out after a few hours of blowing and shoveling. My beard was icicles by the time I was done. That's another new one for me this year.

I'll be right back out there doing it tomorrow and probably the day after. We're supposed to get at least 6" of snow overnight tonight.

30+ degree days are only 6 days away now.

Probably won't get my paint shift done today. I scuff sanded the last of the 4th batch and got them covered. But I figured I'd better go catch up on the snow already out there and do it before the hard snow starts hitting. My paint clothes are now in the dryer, so I couldn't even start painting until after 2PM and that's too late for my system. Oh well...

I think I'll clean and organize today. If I do any work it will be prepping that fake wall and teh drawer for primer.

Mission Accomplished.

Got my internet for another year at the same rock bottom price. Took me about 7 minutes of my life including hold times. I'm actually shocked that it didn't go up... even more shocking is that the base price without the new deal was actually going to be cheaper than I used to pay over a year ago anyhow (I think they might be doing some sort of Covid Special, come to think of it).

Another $360 in the bank for the year.

Got a bit of paperwork done otherwise and I'm all caught up on that for the month. Now it's time to do some dishes and other neglected cleanup. Not going to do any project work today... possibly not tomorrow either with the snow.

YAY for you!

When I last got my flu shot the flu shot went perfectly well. But I also got the Prevnar 13 pneumonia shot, and starting with a roughly 2" hot, red, swollen spot, eventually after a week most of the outer half of my upper arm turned into a huge hot, red, swollen lump; that lasted for another 6 days or so. And iirc, the previous time I got the Prevnar 13 shot, I had a similar, if not so extreme reaction. And then there are my many, many allergies. So I'm going to see about getting the Covid-19 vax in a closely monitored medical situation with epinephrine and resuscitation equipment nearby.

I told the staff I had multiple allergies and carry an epipen, and they said they have an epipen and crash cart onsite. But none of that was needed.

The lines were hugely long. For me, that was prolly THE most potential Covid exposure ever! (Even more than waiting at the Post Office b4 Xmas!) So I would recommend a good-fitting N95.

I just have a love-hate history with vaccines and medications. Half of all antibiotics I've ever been put on as an adult had to be discontinued and permanently forbidden due to untoward body-wide rashes, along with the anti-viral Zovirax, which is why I had to go through shingles on pain medication alone. And aside from the flu vaccines, every other vaccination I've been given - shingles and pneumonia 2x - I've had some major localized reaction. Not to mention weird, supposedly rare side effects other medications I've been on. So, I think I'll need to discuss this with my doctor.

Yup... It's pretty bad out there. Hard to tell at all what even is new snow and what is drifting at this point, but from the looks of neighbor's roofs I'm going to have a lot more on mine that I didn't have yesterday morning.

The back walkway to the garage is completely covered and doesn't even look like it was touched with a shovel yesterday. At least half of that is drifting.

The driveway looks as though I'd be able to get my car into the street if I wanted to risk it, but there's no point in doing that. If I don't get to shoveling the front walkway before the mail comes, at least it's not too bad. After I shoveled over a foot of snow from it yesterday, I didn't even get any mail. (Oh yeah... President's Day).

We should be at the tail end of this particular storm. Only maybe 3 more inches through tomorrow morning.

I think I'll get my paint shift done today and then go out to take care of the snow since I won't do any painting if I go outside first.

Sounds like you got it under control. How old is he?

I think when the time comes you need to make the decision on whether to own another cat or not and don't let the doctor make that choice for you. You've been able to cope with it up until now, and obviously owning a pet is something you take a lot of joy in. Suddenly not having one someday and feeling like you're barred from doing so could be worse for you than what you're trying to prevent. Just my two cents.

It's kind of unfair for me to say all cats make terrible pets. They all have different personalities. When I lived at my grandmas she had 7 of them. 6 of them just pissed all over the place even though the boxes were cleaned all the time. I actually liked 3 of them for their personalities otherwise (including the one who went in the box), but the other 4 were just awful. One of them literally hissed the second you opened the door to the room they were in and had to be separated from the rest of the cats 24/7 because it would tear out another cat's eyes if it had the chance.

The one I liked I gladly would have taken if it needed a place to stay, but my gram's is still very much alive and kicking and she was the last of the 7 cats to pass away a few years ago. Thankfully my aunt was living with her and put her foot down and didn't let my grandma become one of those cat ladies because left to her own devices I could totally have seen her with over 30 cats.

Did you like having a dog? I fekkin' love dogs. People ask me all the time why I don't have one because I'm so good with them but it's because of the reason you stated. Right now, at this point in my life, it would probably be quite manageable. I mean, there's a ton of things I need to do, but I'm at home most of the time, but dogs live quite long and I can't say that would always be the case. I get so angry when I hear stories about all of the dogs that are just abandoned on the side of the road and whenever I really start thinking about getting one I start asking myself all the what if questions and I never follow through with it. My mom gave up the only dog I ever had shortly after the divorce on a weekend our dad had us.

I want one. Maybe I can finally do it when I get this place finished and settle into my "forever" home.

The lines were hugely long. For me, that was prolly THE most potential Covid exposure ever! (Even more than waiting at the Post Office b4 Xmas!) So I would recommend a good-fitting N95.

KIKI: I just have a love-hate history with vaccines and medications.

Well, several of the screening questions touched on shot reactions and allergies to medications. When I mentioned that I had a crap-ton of food allergies and a bad reaction of Levaquin, I saw the technician go over to the in-charge NP and they talked and looked over at me a few times. But in the end, I guess since I never needed an epipen, they went ahead with it anyway and so far all I have is a sore spot on my arm where they did the injection... worse than a flu shot but better than a tetanus shot.

I was greatly reassured to see that they had a doctor/NP attending, and an on-call ER doctor (hospital right next door) as well as an on-call pharmacist.

Still, with your hx of bad, bad reactions I would be extra cautious and definitely communicate with your doctor.

He would walk with us when I walked the dog, and would sit with me when I wanted to sit quietly. He loved being petted but didn't demand it, and would look at me and talk to me trying to communicate, and when I had to have terrible procedures done to him for his health, and had to bathe him afterwards to clean all the poop off his rear end he seemed to understand that it was for his benefit, and trusted me completely to do the right thing.

All of the dogs I've owned have had completely different personalities. Two were rambunctious as hell (mostly labrador and mostly german short hair), one was a quietly-devoted one person dog (mostly samoyed, and I happened to be that oen person) and our current dog (prolly a miniature rat terrier) is a weird cross between a cat and a dog: she demands petting and lap time*, is playful and responsive and a terror to lizards everywhere, but scared of most other dogs and people

* I have never seen a dog do this, but some time around 10PM when we're all settled in and watching TV she will climb up on hubby's chest, push her head under his chin, wagging her tail, and ... I swear to go ... batting her eyelashes at him so he'll pet and cuddle her. It's the darndest thing.

I'd only be interested in a rescue myself. You'd probably assume it's a financial thing knowing me, but my neighbors have done that since I've lived here and I always thought it was a great thing they were doing. However, I would like to get a younger one if possible. The two poor kids over there have already had one die and the second one isn't far behind. I think they've only had him 4 years now.

Well... the Dog Whisperer was my favorite reality show until I found hoarders. I have babysat dogs on occasion and the people can't believe how well behaved they are when they come back. When I go over to my buddy's house his dog follows behind me when I go into the house but if he or his fiancee are opening the door he's right there and pounces in before they get in the house. That's a big thing with dogs. You don't let them do that. It might be their house, but I could go 6 months without being there and in that dog's mind it's my house.

You don't feed them until you're finished eating either. That's not to say they can't have any "human food" as long as it's safe for their diet, but pack leader eats first.

Yeah. To be fair, it was a horribly behaved dog that would destroy the house and do things like scratch a the foyer door until its paws were bleeding if it was left home alone. She was in a bad place and I've long since forgiven her for it, but 36 years later and that memory is never going to die.

Boy... was I wrong about the snow. There was at least 8" out there, and where the drifts collect the walkway to my garage was up to my crotch.

Got my painting shift done for the day first (thankfully), then I went out and handled all the snow. Thank god for that snowblower. If I had a little one like my Dad's I wouldn't have been able to use it. And even though doing the work yesterday seemed like a complete waste of time since I didn't go anywhere and the post office was closed, I'm so glad I didn't have to do two feet of snow everywhere today. I'd have been shoveling for another 5 hours without the blower and who knows how my back would take that?

Really excited about what I started painting today. It's not a loss that it's only 4 pieces too. One lazy susan disc is easy, but I've also got the broken door that I fixed which is one of two of the biggest doors I have as well as the longest cabinet shelf and the microwave nook. It's a lot more intersting when you're painting 4 different pieces instead of churning out the same thing over and over. That nook is going to look fantastic when its' done.

Takes longer to paint those pieces than any combination of 6 I've done, so 4 is good for now. I also have to double up on two of the paint cans when doing the underside of the nook like I did today, so that's one lost space, and my 6th can is just a tiny quart can that wouldn't really be a sufficient platform for any of the remaining pieces that need to be primered.

This will give me 5 more days to prep more for paint. I probably still won't have stripped the stuff remaining out in the garage because it doesn't get into the 30's until the 21st, but it's not like I don't have plenty to keep me busy until then.

No snow in the forecast tonight. FINALLY!!!!!

I can live with what the forecast for the week is right now. I hope it doesn't change for the worse again. 1 to 3 inches tomorrow night, and another 3 to 4 inches on Sunday (which is now snow instead of rain because they made Sunday cold too now as well... grrrrrrrrr)

But then it looks like every day going forward should be in the 30's and hopefully some of this winter hellscape finally starts melting.

When the whole group was playing we played indoors at a local seniors centre.
It's too wet in the around here to play outside and windy. You could possibly play outside if you had the tables in the summer.
