Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Signy, I like three kinds of palm trees where the heads have a lot of large graceful fronds pretty close to the ground.

king palm
to me they look best in small groves of 3

Canary Island date palm
in my area they grow really big around and very stumpy

coconut palm
they're the only palm that does this and often grow with a graceful curve, and are 'the' tropical palm most people think of

Other than that, I'm not a 'fan' of palm trees, and especially NOT the Mexican fan palm! Aside from their small ugly mop-tops WAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy up in the sky (hello ??? aren't trees supposed to provide shade?) they have nasty, really really nasty, hooks on the edges of the fronds that are sharper than heck. I still get twinges when I remember how I accidentally drove one into my hand while I was removing dead fronds from one that planted itself on my property. ... and a trip to the ER for a tetanus shot.

Guess I never know where the day's going to lead me sometimes when you've got projects this big.

Here I thought I was just putting down some plastic to sand the soffit adjustment, but then I ended up putting plastic all over everything in the kitchen and putting a barrier on the room so I could get to sanding everything.

Got the fronts of all of the top cabinets sanded down to perfection. Took out the ancient light fixture above the sink and sanded that area down. (I don't think that has been painted once since the original job when the house was built). Sanded the lips of the soffits where the crown molding will go back in front of the cabinets. Sanded the soffit adjustment down. Flattened the nail holes where I had pictures up before. Then I mudded everything that needed to be mudded... Even remembered to hit around the ceiling fan. Nothing should need another coat of mud now except for a finish coat on the soffit adjustment in a day or two when it dries.

I'd better get to stripping the rest of the cabinets so I can sand them all down now. I hate having all that plastic up over everything and can hardly use my kitchen at all now. That's the motivation I need to get this major part of the process done though. It's my single focus until it's all primed.

Gotta clean up and get ready to do some shopping tonight. I'd planned on cooking on the stove, but until this is all done and I get all the sawdust out of there, I don't think it's a good idea to cook anything on the stove.

At this point, it's all but impossible that a raccoon got into my house in time. The only roof damage was the superficial shingle damage. There used to be two "holes" that were in between the foundation of the porch and the slab for the shed on the far end. The front was blocked off with a rotted out piece of wood, and the back was just freely open beneath the siding for huge animals to get inside (and for moles to travel freely between underground.

A few years back I dug down and blocked the dirt with bricks and stones, then I built up bricks in front of the holes on both sides and finished it all off with Great Stuff.

I saw raccoon paw prints, which look scary too much like small human hand prints, all along the front of my house which seemed to stop at the hole I plugged up in the front, but then I noticed they continued on around the side and the back but much less pronounced. I checked both of the holes and there's no way a raccoon could have gotten in. I doubt a mouse could have.

That didn't stop me from panicking when I heard a noise while in the porch doing some work yesterday. I went up into the attic and filled all the cups with ammonia again... the ones which were empty from when I did the same thing and drove out the raccoon and her whole family a few years ago.

It's stupid, irrational fear at this point. It's not a question of "better safe than sorry". Raccoons aren't intangible.

I just need one normal year where nothing happens so I can finally lighten up a bit.

Gotta catch a break sometime, right?

I know I'm still paying for past sins, but I'm trying my best.

BTW... on the way to the grocery store as I was pulling out of my driveway, I saw the biggest raccoon I've ever seen heading toward the foreclosed, dilapidated garage behind me. (and I'm so glad that thing isn't in my house because it would probably give birth to 10 babies).

I'm done with this. The bank is either going to tear that f-ing thing down, or they're going to fix it. They're also going to take out that ant infested "privacy" fence or allow me to do it. I'm sick of this shit. I let my neighbor get away with not doing any upkeep since his wife ruined his and his daughter's life, but I'll be damned if I let the bank keep doing it.

Years ago as I was trying to drive down the alley to get to work, there was THE biggest fattest skunk I've ever seen ambling along ahead of me. That thing must have been 3' long without the tail, and more than 2feet across. And it's sides were sort of flat flaps of fat extending out sideways and running front to back, like a stingray. And they rippled when it walked, like a wolverine. Since I was not about to rush it along, I had a good chance to watch it from behind as it meandered on its way. I've seen grown skunks busy looking for grubs in the neighborhood, and cute baby skunks gamboling side by side with their tails up and a little curve at the end, like a question mark. But I have never in my life seen such a skunk like that. It must have weighed at least 40lbs.

As for raccoons ... I've seen pretty large 'coons stand tall on their 4 legs, and they look like something you don't want to mess with. I just dislike 'coons even though I haven't had your experience. They're destructive, aggressive, they carry rabies, and nearly all of them have a human-brain-damaging roundworm whose eggs they shit by the millions in their poop, which is found everywhere. https://www.medpagetoday.org/infectiousdisease/generalinfectiousdiseas

Damn... that skunk sounded like a Lovecraftian Horror. Did you see it in clear daylight so you're sure it was a skunk?

It was dark last night when I saw the silhouette of the raccoon from the street light. I know it had to be a raccoon because the only other thing that we get out here even close to the same size is opossums and they're usually a bit smaller and the profile is different.

You seem to get a lot more skunks out there that we do this way. I've only ever come face to face with a skunk once in my life at my mom's house back in high school. When it finally clicked what I was looking at I got out of there like I was running for my life. It was just a tiny thing, but I'd never been sprayed and high school was already tough enough as it was without having to go in there smelling like skunk spray.

In 10 years I've never seen one by me. Just squirrels, raccoons and a dead opossum that the city wouldn't dispose of on the foreclosure that I had to wait until it decomposed so I could do it myself. Man... did that stink for a while. The people the bank sent out to do the lawn let grass in a 2 foot circle around it grow about 3 feet tall before I got rid of it.

Man... I'm hurting today. Been a while since I spent all day on a ladder, and even though a palm sander with a battery that weighs a 4 lbs doesn't sound heavy, that ends up being quite a workout when you've got it up laterally or above your head for a few hours over the course of the day.

Can't stop now though. I have to get enough done that I can finally get all this plastic down. As much as I hated how I'm living with the kitchen as it was, it's three times as bad right now.

One sticking point for me so far was finding a few 1/8" cutoffs. I need a really small one to repair the bottom of a small drawer, and a larger one to cap off the top end cabinet that will be hidden by the fridge. It was covered by one about 1/3rd of the way up, but not at the top. This is because there used to be the double wide short cabinet under the soffit and above an older, smaller fridge. Unfortunately, I can't just take the old piece down and call it a day becuse it turns out the screws to install the shelf brackets blew out the wood on the sides of the cabinet and would do so again even if I repair them. They're already super tiny.

But trying to get 1/8" wood scraps that I need seems to be an exercise in futility. I'm certainly not going to pay $40 for a full sheet of Oak or Birch, and they even have cutdowns in the stores for smaller sizes, but it's far too much. I had considered maybe buying a sheet of the cheapest wood paneling they have for $12 and using the back sides of it for the finished ends, but I'd have to have them cut it in half for me to even try to get it home in my car, and if I end up finding another use for a large piece I might be shooting myself in the foot if I need more than half a sheet.

But then it just hit me this morning... There is a 1/8 panel that was put over the original cabinet door on the side of the dishwasher that I am 95% sure I'm going to remove!

That would be plenty for the drawer fix and the side of the cabinet.

If I remove that dishwasher, my plan is to use plywood to build out both sides under the cabinet, and cap them off with a nice finish piece, once the floor is tiled, so that 1/8" sheet would be removed anyhow.

Bad news is, I don't think I can get to it at the moment with the fridge in the middle of the floor and the dishwasher tucked back in the wall again.

Dishwasher is out in the garage, soon to be a faded memory.

Learned a few new things. A 3/8th inch compression cap for the water line ($1) and a bit of thread tape was all it took to cap off the water supply without any leaks. Unfortunately, to put a legit plug on the garbage disposal I had to buy a $9 kit which had a hose end and a plug for the end of it that you clamp tight in both spots.

Also found a 2'x4' sheet of "hardboard" that is 1/8th of an inch for less than $4, so now I can fix the drawer and cap off the end cabinet with something brand new, paintable and cheap.

After that, I sanded down the mud around the sink light, wiped things down and hit the ceiling, the inside/bottom and outside of the valance and the sides of the two cabinets with primer.

Good day so far.

I finally wrapped up the day.

Went around and sanded under the soffit above the cabinets, and all around the adjusted soffit as well as a few other places I'd mudded.

Then I went around and primed all of that as well as the entire face of all of the top cabinets. I also hit the valance, the ceiling by the sink light and the outsides of the two cabinets around the sink a 2nd time (everything hit twice with only primer is already looking fantastic).

This feels like my most productive day yet. Finally looking like things are eventually going to be done.

Guess I needed some extra sleep after yesterday...

Wow. I never sleep in this late. I was up earlier for a while, but knew I wasn't ready for the day yet.

Think I'm going to start by sanding down what I need to on the side of that cabinet and the broken drawer so I can figure out the best way to cut the hardboard and get those things fixed for paint. Then I'm going to have to start sanding inside of those cabinets if I ever want to get this plastic down.

Eventually I'm going to have to resume paint shifts for the things that haven't been primed yet and then painting all the doors and shelves, but that gives me such a late start to the day that it holds me back from getting the kitchen itself done, so that's on hiatus until next week probably.

Animal Update: No evidence that there are any... That freakout the other day was just a freakout.

I've had two mouse traps down ever since I mentioned I found some droppings behind the stove. One behind the stove, and the other in the attic by an access door to the porch attic where I know they've come in before, and they haven't been disturbed. I haven't seen any more evidence of mice, and when I pulled out the dishwasher I was surprised to see nothing down there.

Can't say I'm surprised I haven't seen any ant activity either after dumping a ton of poison with the spreader either.

I finished the side of the cabinet with the new hardboard. It was cut so well that after just a bit of sanding it was so tight that I didn't even have to put brad nails in it when I glued it.

I wanted to prime it today, but I wasn't just going to waste paint with only that so I sanded the first two cabinets over the stove and microwave inside, cleaned out the corners with a dental pick and drove the screws deep enough into the wall that I can put wood putty in them.

But then I decided that I want to do repairs before priming the inside. That's not going to happen today. And I'm tired of sanding inside the cabinets. Terrible work.

That's alright. I'll take it easy for the rest of the night and get back to it tomorrow. I'd really like to have the other 3 top cabinets stripped by Monday as well, so I can hopefully have everything up top sanded by the weekend. We'll see how it goes.

Still plugging away at what needs to be plugged away at. I have one more estate issue to clear up, then I need to peck away at writing a "Letter of Intent" for whoever takes care of dear daughter after us.

Spent a couple of hours with hubby composing an email to one of our nieces. It sounds like her marriage is on shaky grounds, and while we want to be sympathetic we don't want to precipitate any unthought-out action on her part. bc her email to us was an IED just waiting to explode.

Today I weeded out the biggest weeds from one veggie garden and cut up/binned up a couple MORE flower stalks from the palms. There's another one up front that needs attending to, so I think tomorrow dear daughter and I tackle to back lawn and the final palm frond, and by then we will have three greenwaste bins at the curb and one trash bin full of palm crap, and I'll be hobbling around like a cripple.

Then we get our shots, so I'm not planning to do anything for a couple of days except maybe lay around and recover, if necessary. If I'm up to it, I have "end of the year filing" to work on.

Oh cool. I should have known to tell you to try that. It's been a while since I had a computer that had the old PS/2 (circle) ports, but yeah, there was a period there where they had both ports until the old ones were phased out.

At least yours is new enough to have both.

How many others do you have that are still unused on the front and back now?

They come in handy.

If you are limited on them, you may want to buy a splitter for the keyboard and mouse so you can get them both on one port and free up another. If you have some on the front that are easy to access that's great. You can just plug in a USB thumb drive on there and have an easy way to back up all of your stories on both your computer and the thumb drive.

If you end up having to split anything, put the keyboard and the mouse on one. There's a limit to the amount of power that you can draw from one USB port and it's plenty of power for a mouse and keyboard.

I wouldn't trust plugging in a thumb drive, or never an actual external hard drive that's in a case into a splitter or a hub... especially on an older computer. Save at least one port for storage.

If it's your first shot you probably should be fine. My old man and stem-mom got them recently. No problems with the first shot. He doesn't get sick very often, but the second shot had him not feeling well for about 4 days. Not bedridden or anything, but it was weird talking to him while he's sick because I don't have many memories of doing that. She was bedridden for a day with a fever after the 2nd shot but then she went to work the very next day.

The old mouse and keyboard were dead and I took them to be recycled NOT thinking about what the back of the new case would look like, my bad. I bought a new mouse and keyboard on Friday when I was out.

I talked to another friend on line and they told me to use the USB ports on the back. Which is what I did today when I got home. And all is shiny.

This case is so new and way smaller than the old one.

It has 4 USB ports on the front and another 4 or 5 on the back besides the ones that I plugged the keyboard and mouse in to.

So that could be keyboard, mouse, thumb drive, and external hard drive.

Took a pain pill last nite so I used today to it's full advantage and sprayed the weeds out front, did some weeding there too, cut up the remaining palm frond, edged the background lawn, and dug weeds out of veggie garden #2 while dear daughter mowed. Three green waste bins out front plus one trash bin full of palm debris. Not a bad yardwork tally for the week.

That was a lot, Signy!

One of these days I hope to unbury myself from the stuff I need to do and get to my yard, too.

How did the weeding work out since you had a sprinkling of rain since then? (Here, I got nada.) Did the weeded areas stay weeded? I sure hope so!

But about the constant maintenance requirements of yards ... I discovered that over the years.

When I get to doing my yard, personally, I'm going to make it as low-water and low-maintenance as possible, with lots of 'hardscape' (pavers on decomposed granite, decking over decomposed granite), and larger, drought-tolerant shrubs and trees which don't require as much maintenance, provide shade, and allow cooling breezes underneath. It'll be low on whimsy, but high on function.

I hope.

I wish I was talking about yardwork. And I wish I could do "low-water" too.

Nah... I'm talking about jacking up one side of a porch and a shed, having the slab for the shed mudjacked, building walls and fitting in real windows on the front and back of the porch, installing an actual door on the porch, maybe actually refinish the inside of the porch if I can manage to get all of that done, removing bad caulk from the 1st floor and 2nd floor windows so I can re-caulk them and paint them, kill those f-ing moles that made new tracks all along the foundation, free up the walls in the basement around the cracks so I can have proper injection molding done, re-grade stuff, make proper extensions for the gutters, put sod down where the back patio pavers that the ants destroyed used to be, clean and re-paint all the old aluminum....

I'm sure there's more.

Yardwork just needs to be done in between all of that, along with continued work on the kitchen and living room.

Good luck with your yard this summer.

I managed to finally strip all of the top cabinets today.

Now they all have to be sanded. :(

How did the weeding work out since you had a sprinkling of rain since then? (Here, I got nada.) Did the weeded areas stay weeded? I sure hope so!

Well, the sprayed areas were consistently killed, altho it took a long time (1+ week) for the weedkiller to start to show an effect and 2+ weeks to be fully effective.

You got nada? We got a surprising 0.5".

Anyway. since the rain I see a lot of very small sprouts, which I COULD blast with flamethrower if the FD would let me. There was also areas that I missed spraying, so this was the 2nd round of spraying the front.

BTW there is a nesting pair of scrub jays in the Cape Honeysuckle which was planted by the previous owners and is a shrub that forgot that it's a shrub and turned into a tree. Ever since I retired I've given up on trying to restrain its upward growth, all I'm doing now is pruning it up so we can walk underneath it. Now that it's tall enough, the birds seem to like it better. I'm keeping the scrub jays in the area with regular tempations of peanuts. (They also tempt the squirrels. I saw three in our backyard yesterday.)

I'm also corrective-pruning the feijoa into a short multitrunked tree instead of a lollipop. The previous pruning had caused it to grow into a tight tangle of little twigs. Fortunately, it doesn't mind being pruned and thinned out in the middle, so every time I want to do something not-too-stressful I grab the pruners and clip more dead twigs and errant branches out of the middle. If it wasn't evergreen it would make a nice little shade tree for your front sidewalk.

I'm slowly collecting the plants for a separate "pollinator garden" which will be at one end of my former "xeric garden" in the backyard. For the special "pollinator garden" I have verbena lilacina (native), one of the musk sages (I honestly forget which one), a multicolored lantana shrub, some narrowleaf milkweed (for the monarchs), and I think I'll be putting in some Joe Pye weed. But I also have many pollinator-friendly plants in the front yard, most of them native but not all ... I'll be planting "gold coin" which looks like CA seaside daisy (erigeron) but yellow-flowered, and for the lowest-level planting some thyme, because it is very short and has very dark green leaves.

In one corner the combination is: tall purple fountain grass (sterile), CA goldenrod, a beautful plum-colored chrysanthemum, a lime green, pale yellow and pink aeonium (dear daughter's pick), and Wayne Roderick erigeron. Along one part of the curb will be mattole select epilobium (or zauschneria, I wish they'd settle on a name) which blooms in fall, which I intend to interplant with sternbegia (looks like bright golden-yellow fall-blooming crocuses) and more Wayne Roderick erigeron. In fact, I intend to plant a LOT of WR erigeron along the borders. Along the other part of the curb I have more WR erigeron, and two "mats" of "silver carpet"- a CA native aster with almost white leaves and small lavendar flowers in late summer.

That poor ceanothus. We'll see if it eventually recovers.

I;m turning the veggie gardens into working gardens, again. I had hoped to grow a winter garden but was felled by arthritis. I was also planning on making an asparagus patch, but it seems dear daughter can't eat asparagus so I'm not sure it's worth it. Still under consideration.

Moe rain due this Wed, they say. As Brenda says: We shall see.

I have seen feijoas growing in their natural state. They are thickly-growing shrubs 15' tall and 12'wide. No wonder it doesn't mind pruning. It's got a lot of sprout-ability under that bark.

A lovely plant that I tend to associate with the upper mid-west and tall-grass prairies. In fact your entire pollinator garden sounds like a version of that garden-set.

The forecast rainfall amount keeps dropping and dropping in my area till it's down to not much at all - less than an inch.

I was going to ask you - do you have a website that shows weather fronts and lows and highs for N America? I've been wondering if the rain is just fizzling because there's not as much moisture in the air as originally thought, or if the rainy weather has wandered on elsewhere. I'd like to think that SOMEONE who needs it is at least getting rain!

Yeah. USB is great. Now that you're rocking a PC that has so many ports and you don't need the old keyboard/mouse circle connectors, I'd love to say that you're living in the age where they'll never change...

But I've already heard talk that they will.

It's a shame really. It's been so nice having "Universal" Serial Bus (USB). Except for the power to the wall and the cord to the monitor, literally everything you could ever want to plug into a PC these days can plug right into them.

I've plugged in my keyboard and mouse with them. Tons of USB thumb drives. A half dozen external hard drives. My tablet, which can be charged through a PC and transfer all my pics and videos. An old camera I had before I got the tablet. All of my MP3 players to charge and transfer music. Heck... I can even plug in all of the rechargeable motion sensor lights I installed in all of my closets when they run out of juice.

USB will be a part of computers for some time to come, but I think the problem is that there will eventually be a bottleneck of transfer speeds with the design as other components of the computer get faster.

Whatever new technology ends up coming along to replace it won't make it disappear overnight... but we're going to be stuck with a not-so-universal situation again for a while.

It's the main reason why I've decided against springing for some pricey plug outlets for my walls that also have USB charge ports next to the plugs.

Seems modern and fancy right now, but they'll be dated the minute people can't just plug their cell phones right into them without an adapter.

Do you have an MP3 player, Brenda?

They're really cheap these days and I know you're into your music. There is actually easy ways to convert youtube videos to mp3, so you could find the songs you like on youtube and have them on a player while you're doing various chores around the house.

I REALLY hate that we can't share.

So far, it doesn't look terrible this year out by me, but it's still VERY early in the season.

That being said, we're supposed to get .6 inches on Thursday alone.

I'm all set to go to my brother's place with my dad on Thursday, but the rain might keep me from going.

I'm in a lot of trouble if only .6 inches ends up being a problem for me. But we did just have a hell of a melt, and the ground is still pretty frozen.

At the very least, I have to take a break from work in the kitchen itself, go down and scuff sand the last round of things I primed so I can get the paint cans off the floor, get everything else off the floor that has piled up during months where I'm not worried about water, and get my shop vac and broom and get all the dust up just in case I do get any leaks while I'm gone.
