KIKI: wunderground links to a series of maps in its maproom

MAP CATALOG
https://www.wunderground.com/maps

CURRENT RADAR
https://www.wunderground.com/maps/radar/current

WUNDERMAP
https://www.wunderground.com/wundermap (I've never used it but it looks like it uses some sort of GIS software and you can add "layers" to the map, including precipitation)

JET STREAM
https://www.wunderground.com/maps/wind/jet-stream

CURRENT RADAR
https://www.wunderground.com/maps/radar/current

There's also a weekly rainfall.

But if you want to see what's happening to a storm in real-time, just go to wunderground's daily forecast. They have a radar map which you can "play" thru a six-hour loop. If I REALLY want to know whether, or when, it's going to rain and by how much, I go to the radar loop and play it. That way I can usually tell which way the rainbands are heading and whether or not they're heaading my way. Last event, the rainband literally went over my area lengthwise, but it looked to me like it might miss you just bc it was so narrow.

The radar map can be expanded to cover the entire west coast, western USA, and more, so if you want to see how Four Corners or Utah or Arizona are faring, you can look at them too. It's only defect is that since there are no radar stations at sea, you can't see the storms forming, only the ocean out to about 50 miles. All you can do, I think, is find a satellite map and surmise from cloud cover.

Wow. That's a lot of USB ports on a computer old enough to have the round inserts for a keyboard and mouse.

You're all set then.

I know. I was quite surprised to find so many on the back.

Yup, I am.

Yeah. USB is great. Now that you're rocking a PC that has so many ports and you don't need the old keyboard/mouse circle connectors, I'd love to say that you're living in the age where they'll never change...

But I've already heard talk that they will.

It's a shame really. It's been so nice having "Universal" Serial Bus (USB). Except for the power to the wall and the cord to the monitor, literally everything you could ever want to plug into a PC these days can plug right into them.

I've plugged in my keyboard and mouse with them. Tons of USB thumb drives. A half dozen external hard drives. My tablet, which can be charged through a PC and transfer all my pics and videos. An old camera I had before I got the tablet. All of my MP3 players to charge and transfer music. Heck... I can even plug in all of the rechargeable motion sensor lights I installed in all of my closets when they run out of juice.

USB will be a part of computers for some time to come, but I think the problem is that there will eventually be a bottleneck of transfer speeds with the design as other components of the computer get faster.

Whatever new technology ends up coming along to replace it won't make it disappear overnight... but we're going to be stuck with a not-so-universal situation again for a while.

It's the main reason why I've decided against springing for some pricey plug outlets for my walls that also have USB charge ports next to the plugs.

Seems modern and fancy right now, but they'll be dated the minute people can't just plug their cell phones right into them without an adapter.

Do you have an MP3 player, Brenda?

They're really cheap these days and I know you're into your music. There is actually easy ways to convert youtube videos to mp3, so you could find the songs you like on youtube and have them on a player while you're doing various chores around the house.

Tech always changes. Nature of advancements. Things get faster and smaller.

I've never done anything fancy with a laptop. And now I have to sort of relearn how to use a PC.

No I don't have an MP3 player SIX. Not sure if I will right now. That is why I have a my Victrola which has a USB port in it if I want to do that.

But I am content for now.

If you're ever interested in grabbing the music you'd like, I've got a program that makes it real easy. It converts videos to mp3. Just let me know.

I'm taking the day off. I'm exhausted after the late nights, and my kitchen still stinks of that stripping agent anyhow.

It does suck even with something simple like mine.

A good nap can do wonders for your outlook.

My laundry day is coming up. Was tossing something into the laundry basket Monday night that had my keys in it. Luckily I heard them clinking and got them out before anything bad happened.

Well, we got our second shot today. I did look up the "California variant" that KIKI had mentioned in the other thread and it does seem to be more infectious than previous variants, rising from a 0% prevalance back in Sept to a 50% prevalance in January. Who knows what it is now! (no, WHO doesn't know, but then, they don't seem to kmow much!) So there's no indication whether the Pfizer vaccine will be as effective against it as against the variants for which it was developed. Seems to have slipped under the radar.

Thanks for all the links Signy! I just never visited the maps section of Wunderground for some reason.

I was also wondering ... a few decades ago I did try the corn gluten only I have no recollection of how it worked. But, iirc, you also did try it yourself a few years ago. Did it do anything good or bad? I don't remember what you posted.

Glorious day today. Almost 70 degrees and sunny. I think I got a tan.

Cleaned up all the debris on the lawn and got a surprise visit from the tree people who came to grind the stumps. Turns out it was that dude's job to clean up the mess, but I helped him do it anyway since I wanted to be outside for the day anyhow.

Supposedly he's coming back tomorrow to fix the lawn damage. That will be awesome if he does.

Hoping I can still find the energy to clean some stuff around the house and do some reorganization after I take a much needed shower.

It's nice to finally break a sweat again.

Got the kitchen cleaned up and organized last night except for the plastic sheets and what's under them. Going to focus on cleaning up the basement and scuff sanding the last batch of stuff that I got ready for paint a while back so I can have everything up off the floor for the rain.

Shouldn't be a problem. It doesn't look like as much rain as they were thinking it could be.

Could be part of my problem with corn gluten meal is that I only tried it once.

I thought this was informative.

*****

BTW we had one hellacious rainstorm last night. Unfortunately I was too sleepy to think to put out the rain gauge before I went to bed, but it was raining so hard that hubby heard the noise over his shower, and when he checked around rain was jetting off the roof. Prolly an inch. There was one crack of lightning/thunder so loud it shook the house and woke me up, but all I did was go back to sleep!

This storm was the tail end of one that's hitting central CA so north of us prolly got more rain.

Yeah. It was going good until the wind today. Gusts up to 55MPH kept the tree people from coming around to fix the damage they did, but I talked to the boss lady and she said they're not billing me until that's fixed, so I'm not going to worry about that today.

So hopefully the wind doesn't knock the power out and I should be good. Looks like maybe we'll only get 1/4" of rain in the next 24 hours which means I'm going down to see my bro as long as I don't have to man the generator.

Good thing too, because I didn't get around to doing much cleanup in the basement except for getting anything I didn't want getting wet up off the floor. Not really feeling all that great today. Not sick, but a bit achey from the work yesterday and I think possibly too much sun exposure after months of not having any at all.

Just going to do a little shopping now and take it easy for the night. Gotta get up early tomorrow.

You might need to find the original motherboard install disc, or an image of it online if you can't find it. This install disc would include the sound drivers for the on board sound card as well as some other things that need to be re-installed any time the drive is wiped.

It's possible that wasn't re-installed after the previous owners cleaned it and put a fresh Windows on there.

If that is what your problem is, it's also likely that your USB speeds for data transfer are only USB1.0 and are much slower than the 2.0 that you should be getting out of them.

I'll try to help you out with that when I get the time if you don't figure out that it's a simpler issue and get it working on your own.

Brenda - it doesn't work for music - but - as someone with bad speakers whose hearing has taken a deep, deep dive over the last few months - when it comes to (non-music) videos you'll often find a [CC] option at the bottom of the video that turns closed captions on.

I've used the CC option many times on videos with the laptop and I will have to do it again until I get new speakers. The ones I have are old. Speakers is going on my list of things to do tomorrow when I am out.

Do you have a pair of headphones you can plug in real quick to do a test that you're at least getting sound?

Then you'd at least know that installing mobo drivers aren't a problem and you won't be looking at snail-speed data transfer when saving things to thumb drive.

Bright sunny day here, too. But unusually cold for LA: high of 59.

We got more rain Wednesday night/Thursday morning, an accumulation of 3/4" according to my rain gage (which ALWAYS reads higher than any of the LA DWP rain gages anywhere near us. I'm going to try placing it further from the house.)

Yesterday was the first day since my second Covid -19 vaccination that I felt inclined to do much of anything. It's not that I felt tired, per se, but every time I thought of doing something physical it just sounded like so much .... effort.

But the soil was still too soggy to do any yardwork (Who likes spading mud? Not me!) and I had to do weekly grocery shopping, which was about the level of energy that I had, so I felt I had accomplished a lot!

I'm turning veggie garden #2 back into what I call a "working garden": It's about half-spade-weeded. I discovered, when spading the garden, that the shredded avocado leaves from last year that I had placed between the rows of plants so the soil wouldn't get compacted improved the soil wonderfully, and once the avocado leaves fall I'll be prepared with my leaf shredder and not let any of that wonderful mulch go to waste. But at the moment the leaves are still hanging on and soil level is a little low, so I'll have to finish taking my compost pile apart and move it into the garden, and buy some more compost to make up the difference.

*****

One of the things that is helping with my arthritis is ... fasting. I decided to try that bc I have so many diagnosed food allergies, I was wondering if I had more that weren't found simply bc they don't have the prepped allergen solutions to test with.

So for whatever reason ... food allergies, modified metabolism, autophagy, immune system "reset" ... if I fast for about 20 hours each day my arthritis doesn't magically go away, but it doesn't wake me up at night bc of aches and pains, which is a blessing.

So if I take a pain pill once a week, and an anti-inflammatory once a week, and fast most of the week, I can stay functional.

It's unlikely bc the showiest flowers have the biggest pollen grains, and those tend to fall to the ground pretty quickly.

But I'll bet there's something "blooming" at the same time - grass, weeds, trees like pines or the ubiquitous Chinese elm- which have very small flowers and tiny pollen grains that float forever and can get inhaled deeply into your nose. Around here they post "pollen counts" as part of the weather forecast. Divided into trees, grasses, and ragweed (funny that ragweed should have it's own category!) https://weather.com/forecast/allergy/l/Los+Angeles+CA

Have you ever tried to correlate pollen counts with allergies?

Sometime they give a pollen count on the local news. They haven't started that yet but I am sure there is stuff blooming and yeah inhaling all the lovely pollen. Lots of trees and flowers in my province. So it could be anything.

I got a little heavier stick vacuum on Monday or Tuesday. They do save on space. I can stick it into any corner and I don't need anything overly big for this new space as there is only me here messing it up. I try to vacuum every couple of weeks because I track in dirt and other stuff on my shoes. Coats and backpacks pick up things too. Also with long hair, I shed at times. *L*

Nuts! Got speakers but now I have to get headphones to use them because I didn't buy a sub woofer to go with them. That sucks.

Japanese Cherry Blossoms are out and are very pretty but I think they could be bothering my allergies some when I am out.

SIGNY: It's unlikely bc the showiest flowers have the biggest pollen grains, and those tend to fall to the ground pretty quickly.

How's the hunt for the stick vacuum going? I've never used one myself, but I can imagine they'd save on storage space!

Tell me about it! With three people and a dog constantly going in and out, the heavier-trafficked areas need sweeping or vacuuming every week. I even have a "shoes off" policy for myself ... not that anyone else follows it! ... but I sweep up a lot sand. And dust. And people hair and ... when dog is shedding ... dog hair. And altho I love our Brazilian cherry hardwood floors, they do darken with age and show dust like crazy!

At some point, I'm going to have to damp-mop the floors because our neighborhood is bouded by four very high-traffic routes, and the fine particles tend to be kinda greasy and need more than just sweeping/vacuuming.

SO, I buy organic whole chicken bc it's the only organic meat we can afford, and I try to use up as much of it as I can. I skin them and cut them up into drumsticks, thighs, and breast meat and wings. I toss the carcasse in a pot and cook it and strip the meat off the bones for the dog's dinner. But lately I decided to try making bone broth, and it is yummy! After stripping the meat off the bones I just return the bones to the pot and simmer them for another three hours or so.

I'll be using that as part of my "soup" recipes from now on.

But the sound actually works though?

That will save some hassles.

You might look into a pair of wireless, bluetooth earbuds. They can be a bit pricey but I've heard a lot of good things about them. You wouldn't be tethered to your computer with them, and the range on them is so good that you wouldn't have to worry about doing any work anywhere inside your apartment and the connection dropping out on you.

I've never owned a pair myself, but I hear a lot of good things about the quality and affordability of a brand called Raycon. There are probably cheaper options out there though that would do the job for you. I think their lowest tier pair is around $65.

Got ya. I have a no shoe policy too which I always follow. Socks in the winter and probably bare foot in the summer or once it warms up.

For this Sunday it is raining.

Nope, they don't work as the speakers are plugged into the headphone spot on the case.

I have to get something that actually sits over my ears. I tried ear buds but because of the way my ears are they hurt me.

I have the same problem with ear buds. Tried different sizes and configurations but they still felt uncomfortable.

So, after taking care of everyone else's agenda, I finally got to yardwork today. DD dug weeds up from veggie garden #2 while I dug up a chest-tall fam plam that had planted itself in my very overgrown fern. Had to dig up more than half the fern to get at the palm, and it was a royal pain to dig up!

My next dig-up project is the not-so-heavenly bamboo. Been whacking at that thing for a few years now.

First, I lopped it down, but it grew back.

So I asked hubby to get out the reciprocating saw and he cut the many, many branches down to less than a foot tall.

But it grew back.

So I doused it with Roundup, and it laughed.

So last year dd and I began the project of digging it up, but found it has an exceptionally well-developed root system, what are prolly a dozen roots or more, at least as thick as ... hmmm... a broomstick.

Impossible to dig/lever up, as the roots go deep. All I can do ... which is what I was doing today ... was dig up enough to expose a root, lop a section out of it, then move on to the next root. I think I got about 20% of it done.

I'm sure there's an easier way, like with a rented stump grinder, if they make small ones, but this is the best I can do with the tools on-hand. I'll get it, it will just take time and some sweat.

Wait... So you still have no sound?

Is the spot you're plugged into on the front or back?

If there is only one input that the speakers fit into, they should be working right now. You don't need to buy a special sub woofer to get it to work (I thought you just wanted one for better sound quality).

Is there only one spot that thing fits into? If there are multiple spots, are they color coded (like pastel pink, green and blue)?

I'm starting to think the problem might still be that the sound and motherboard drivers aren't installed. Not a huge problem, but something I may have to work with you on.

It would be great if there was a product number on the back of the case (not the Serial Number, but a Product Number. I could likely easily track down the installation disk image for you if you had that. But that would only be possible if it were a pre-built computer like a Dell, Gateway, e-Machines, Hewlett Packard type deal, and not something somebody built on their own.

If you can get a product number from a sticker on the back of your case for me, I'll see what I can do about getting you the driver for your motherboard or at least your soundcard. You shouldn't go buy anything else until we can at least know that your computer is putting out sound at all.

If you can't find a product number, please download this program when you get a chance and I'll ask you what I need after you can run it. We'll be able to get your sound card model with it for sure, and might even be able to get the motherboard info I'd need to try to find the right drivers for everything.

https://www.techspot.com/downloads/160-sisoftware-sandra-lite.html

I trust techspot and I trust the creators of that program. I've been using it for years. I'm currently downloading this version to install it so I can look at my computer on my end when walking you through what you need to do.

(Oh, and if you can't find the product number and install the program, make sure not to enable network access when installing it. By default it is not enabled, so you don't need to do anything. Though it would be easier if I were to remotely do what needed to be done on your computer, I would never do that for anybody since I don't want to promote bad behavior for anyone. Lot's of scammers out there LOVE to get remote access to people's computer and unwittingly do things on them. Don't ever let somebody get remote access to your computer).

You don't need earbuds. In fact, it's even cheaper if you don't get earbuds.

This one at WalMart is only around $35, and even has a microphone you can attach/detach if you ever get into communicating with people over the computer.

I'm not saying that you should specifically buy those ones. I'd never buy a pair without looking at reviews to make sure that it will last a while, it's comfortable on your head and doesn't slip off easily.

But there are options, and it's great not being tethered to the computer anymore.

Unexpected rain early this AM put pause on the yardwork plans (dig up more heavenly bamboo), so indoor work it is! I'll put tax papers together, since they've been dribbling in late. (Believe it or not, I just got a 1099 last week!)

Hubby has bluetooth headphones and they work fine. He uses them when he wants to listen to something and daughter and I are making noise in the background.
