In the garden, and RAIN!!!! by SIGNYM

Back side of the 2nd round of doors painted and should be ready to flip over within the hour.

In between I got outside and re-taped the garage window and gave it a 2nd coat of paint. Looks great.

Unfortunately, I had the paint on a small table while I was doing the intricate work for the glass pane holders and a huge gust of wind knocked it over. I lost about 1/4 of the quart of paint and made a huge mess that needed to be cleaned up.

All I needed was 2 more minutes before that part was done and I would have had the damn thing in my hand while I was painting the rest of the window.

It had to be one of the rare occasions I use oil paint, right?

I had assumed, due to this thread, that you did. But maybe that is what you are lacking. I keep hearing these little kits are life-savers for gardening, tree health, other plants, etc. It always sounds like it is a simple science test and then solution situation. If I wanted to try a green thumb, I would have done that first. I hear people talking about that like it is just soooo easy. For this kind of plant, the mix needs to be this. For that kind of plant, the mix needs to be that.

My brother's condition seems to be getting worse and he's shutting everyone out. I'm hoping for the best but I think he's going to end up being a casualty of Democrat fake pandemic lock downs.

There's nothing I can do, and when my old man is ready to walk away there's probably nothing that anybody can do.

Well, I got one end of the vcr wired with the yellow, red and white hook up and the other end through a hole in the back of the tv stand. I will get that end hooked up to the tv over the weekend.

And ** I ** finalized some important paperwork yesterday, making sure everything was running the way it should - all automatically. (Paperwork makes me anxious because I can't manage forms. So my dodge is to call up and ask (or in this case online chat): What needs to be done? What do I need to do now? How is everything going? And then to automate literally everything I can manage to automate.)

So I took a day off today from trying to catch up and keep up and working on all the tasks and projects I have lined up ... and I slept. And slept. And slept. It felt great. And though I know that due to sleeping so late today I'll get zero sleep tonight, it's OK.

So, tomorrow I'll be back at things.

Youre going to have to tell me at some point what you automated, and how. Maybe I could use a few tips on making my life easier.

But I'm glad you slept! Sleep. I keep telling dear daughter, it's as important as food and water and air.

Meanwhile, today, I DIDN'T cook. Altho the weather was not as brutally hot as predicted, this was the hottest day of the week and so I scheduled a "take-out" day for the family. It was gratifying to hear hubby say that he lost his taste for jalapeno burgers with onion rings because my cooking is so much better.

Oh, one thing about autopay ... if you're using your credit card (as we are, because we get points) and your credit card expires, all of your autopays go kerplooey.

So when I re-started all of my autopays, I made sure to write a lost of ALL of the autopays and all of the contact info (mostly website but our Medigap needed signed reauthorization) for the next time.

Now I recall another thing: nitrogen. Must be content.

I used to listen to a radio call-in show, something named garden something something. When the likes of ME can predict what the questions the show host is going to ask each caller, it was made to seem quite simple and straightfoward. The caller would say what plant, and what was wrong or problem. The host would ask questions and narrow down the troubleshooting, to solve the problem. PH level of the soil was one thing, nitrogen content I think was another, and no I've forgotten some of the others. Most of the callers seemed to already be prepared with knowing the data before calling, so maybe I assumed they all had a soil sample kit for measuring all of those parameters. But maybe they took a soil sample down to the local gardening shop to have it tested. Some callers had a problem where the questions were not what I was assuming were going to be asked, and I found those intriguing.
Anyway, it seemed like the soil measuring was half of the equation - and the other half was the data chart or table, seeing what each plant needed to have or not in it's soil. Some plants apparently cannot be adjacent to other plants, because the soil requirements for each were mutually exclusive to the other.

If somebody like me WITHOUT A CLUE can follow along, you should be able to make headway with whatever they were doing. Maybe BoobTube has clips from The Gardening Show? Or maybe the web has a "plant troubleshooting guide" or soil guide?

Wasn't doing much of anything for most of the day today, but then I got up and at least did one coat on one side of the 2nd batch of doors.

Then I spent some time planning and mapping out exactly which height I need to install the six doors on the top cabinets to the left of the sink.

What a pain that was, but I think it's going to work and completely mask the fact that the cabinets were installed at incorrect heights along with the other additions I made like trimming out the bottom of the cabinets with corner guards.

I went ahead and installed one of the doors just to get an idea of what the finished product is going to look like and I love it. It's late though, and I want a clear head and some daylight while I'm doing the rest. This part of the job is way too critical to be rushing or doing after 10PM just because I didn't do it earlier today.

Trackballs were great.

I wish they'd bring back the Microsoft Trackball from the late 90's. That was the PERFECT mouse. I had one for about 15 years before it broke on me.

And rather than put two scroll wheels on it, they opted for zero scroll wheels, so going back to having to drag pages up and down was a drag too.

EDIT: THIS is something I should consider looking for on the Chinese markets at Wish.com and Alibaba.com.

I'm absolutely sure that the only reason that there hasn't been a brand new version of this made by another 3rd party company like Logitech is because Microsoft owns the patents and won't allow anybody else to build it even though they obviously have no intention to ever make one themselves again.

I bet the Chinese have cloned it.

The only question is whether or not it will break after 2 weeks.

Since my other computer had been a laptop, yeah trackpad and keyboard.

Mouse is now all dusted. I use paintbrushes for it and for keeping the keyboard clear as well.

Think my other problem is that I keep lifting the mouse slightly off the pad. Have to watch that.

Also this mouse doesn't have a big ball on the bottom its a light and the scroll thing is on top.

I've had 3 or 4 trackballs, none of them with the Micro$haft Warning Label on them.

I think my earliest (and best) one had a ball about the size of a billiard cue ball, the smaller version. That was fantastic, and likely still is, if I can find it. Fingers could practically dance on that baby, not much of the ball was exposed. Will never have higher scores in games like Minesweeper, Battleship, than what was possible with that.
My Godmother had trouble with using the internet because she had broken a finger many years earlier, and her kids couldn't figure out a way for her to partake. Until I got her a trackball, and she could use one hand for the ball, the other fingers for the buttons.

I'm sure there are other good trackballs out there. I just haven't found one.

Like I said, that thing goes for almost $400 new in the box now on the rare occasion somebody sells one unused, and the used ones never go for less than $100.

15 years isn't bad for a mouse either, and it was only $35 when it was new. Granted, that's $35 in 1999 money.

Kick ass day today. Painted the 2nd coat on the back of the 2nd batch of doors, then I went outside and mowed the front lawn before the garbage men came. Decided against even mowing the back since it gets a lot of sun exposure and we haven't had any rain for a while. Then I went to the hardware store and bought a large assortment of metal washers because I wanted to have washers on the screws inside the door for the new oil rubbed bronze door knobs.

I got all 6 of the top cabinet doors to the left of the sink installed and they're PERFECT! That was a plan five months in the making and it worked out as well as I imagined it would. That being said, it did take me about 25 minutes per door to install.

Ran into a snag on the final door too. Looks like there was some damage to the wood inside the door on where the top screw was going in, so it wouldn't bite. I tried a larger screw and met a ton of resistance. I ended up having to drill a new pilot hole for a long time before I broke through whatever was blocking me there. I think it was something metal. Got it in nice and tight with a longer drywall screw. It's recessed, so nobody should ever notice that screw is black instead of chrome.

I put my tiny little black rubber dome pads at the top and bottom corners of every door, and now you can't hear the soft-close doors at all when they shut. That's just a bonus, since I bought the pads so there wouldn't be two painted surfaces ever touching each other.

Tomorrow while painting the last group of doors I'll be measuring the exact heights for the three doors on the right of the sink, and hopefully I can move some things around so I can finish cutting my corner guard trim to box out what I still need to do on the bottom cabinets, and maybe even get the other wall under the countertop started so I can finally have these cabinets wrapped up when the last set of doors are painted and cured.

Feels like I've been busy but with nothng to show forit so far, except produce from the garden.

I was ready to toss the cucumbers that my Japanese cucumber plants were producing ... no matter how often and how thoroughly I watered them, the leaves were always drooping, and the cucumbers looked shriveled and shrunken with big "spines" (knobs, really) on the skin. So when I started preparing them for tonight's dinner I thought I'd mostly be feeding the trash can. But after peeling one to remove the spines I cut it up and it was actually quite juicy inside, sweeter than most and with none of the bitterness that cucumbers have.

The zucchini has been producing; a few night ago we had burgers with "zoodles" on the side. I missed a zucchini so now I have a VERY large one... and zucchini parmagiana (a family favorite) on the menu.

And one of the tomatoes is just beginning to turn red, so soon I won't have to buy any from the store. Need to thin the beets and plop the greens into ham and bean soup(on the menu).

Still spending a fair bit of time researching long term investments. When I figure it out I'll let you know what I found.

Still wasn't done for the day...

Did some cleanup and reorganization after moving round two of the doors up to the living room to cure tomorrow so I could get the last group of the 4 largest bottom doors staged in the basement and I can paint them first thing when I start tomorrow.

Once I vacuum out the cabinets from the debris from the drill, I can start putting most of the stuff still in boxes on my living room floor in them and all the shelves and drawers that were staged along that wall for months are gone, so my living room won't look like a hoarder's paradise anymore by this time next week.

One thing that's killing me though is I seem to have lost the screw to the door knob I used to test on one of the cabinet doors as soon as the order came in. I've checked and re-checked every box and bag I had in the house from this work and it didn't turn up. I'm hoping it's in one of the bags I've got in the garage with the old hardware that I'm going to be throwing out soon, but I doubt it is.

It wouldn't be a big deal if one of the screws from some old nice hardware I've had on my curio cabinet since I restored it, but the threads are just a slightly different width and they won't work.

I think I had a knob or two extra though since I had to buy them in packs of 10 so it should be OK. I figured that 30 would be enough to do all of my cabinets, re-do the curio cabinet with them to match, eventually do the vanity in the 2nd floor bathroom and still have a few left over to put on the vanity if and when I ever decide to do something with the bathroom downstairs.

I've been checking the weather on wunderground. So far, it STILL looks like monday is going to be the day when temps drop below the 90-100F range, and that'll go through thursday before temps start climbing gain. (My thermometer in my kitchen registered 115F today.

) So I hope we'll be getting that bit of a break.

On tap for tomorrow - new front tires for the car. And after that, a drive out to Whole Foods to restock some items I buy and keep in bulk.

Cabinets are getting there.

Still got a bit to put together on the bottoms before I can give the outsides a final coat and get the doors up after they're painted, but yeah.

Then I'll have to decide what I'm doing with the countertop, if anything, and get the floor tiled so I can paint the walls and then install the door trim and baseboard.

God... 115 Degrees on the thermometer!!!!????

Don't hurt yourself. That's beyond discomfort and straight into legit dangerous territory. I hope it does cool off for you soon.

90 and miserable humid here today after a flash thunderstorm early in the morning. Don't feel I can really complain though while Kiki is sitting in 115 degree weather.

Got a late start on painting the fronts of the final batch of doors. I should be able to flip and paint the other side in an hour or so.

Cleaned up the debris from the storm and put my tape up where it needs to be to guide the last 3 door placements on the upper cabinets.

If I can stay on point, I'll get that other coat of paint on and hang those three doors before calling it quits tonight.

In addition to your paint brush, remember to turn the keyboard upside down and tap a corner of it against the desk top. This helps gunk drop from between the keys instead of getting packed down in between.

Top cabinets are finally done.

I'm in love with them.

Got the first coat on both sides of the last batch of bottom cabinets too. I think the enamel paint will do a fine job sealing in what remains of the stains that were bleeding through the primer.

Just got to figure out how I want to go about trimming out the rest of the lower cabinets. It's not an essential piece of the puzzle since I don't need to hide uneven cabinets down there, but I did already put corner guard at the bottoms of the cabinets because the edges were a little beat up. Just need to decide if I want to wrap that all the way down to the floor past the toe kick.

Hopefully I can get that all installed tomorrow because it's going to need to be caulked and spackled before I get that final coat of paint on the fronts and outsides of those cabinets. Can't get the bottom doors on until that's done and had a full day to cure.

We must have more of a sea breeze here. It never did ge to 97 like they predicted. So while KIKI was dealing with 115F it was about 95F here.

But we have a relatively insulated home, so our AC was able to keep the living areas a comfy 76.

KIKI, if you ever want a cool place to sleep, just let me know!

In the meantime, still busy with "chores', not progress on anything except that dd and I turned her dresser rightside up and she managed to finish spraying the last side of the legs that we couldn't get to before. So now she'll be able to start tidying up, with my help. The veggie garden and the potted plants got their twice-weekly watering, the foundation bushes, back lawn, rose bushes and avocados got their twice a month watering, but the CA native area won't get watered again until the end of the mmonth.

I noticed something interesting: the big butterflies (monarchs, swallowtails, mourning cloaks) like the tall flowers like verbena bonariensis and tall cosmos, while the medium butterflies (white and sulfur butterflies) like the shorter cosmos and verbena lilacina, and the smallest butterflies (skippers) like the shortest flowers: creeping lantana and matchweed.

Also, while most of my flowers are pooping out - the CA poppies are dying out and the cosmos are fading - the big California buckwheat is blooming and attracting all kinds of interesting pollinators, many of which I don't even recognize. The bonariensis and purple creeping lantana are also blooming, and the lantana that I so roughly transplanted and looked like it died is also JUST beginning to bloom, with blossom heads that start out butter yellow but turn to pink and lilac from the outside in, so the flower clusters are actually mutlti-colored with pale yellow centers and pink/lilac surround. Pretty!

In the fall I'll have CA goldenrod (I hope) and two kinds of bright orange-red CA fuschia.

Also, first beets. As I mentioned, first cucumbers, and first tomato - yay! I haven't picked it yet bc it's destined for salad tomorrow, and it'll taste better fresh off the vine. Today we had that ginormous zucchini/turned into zucchini lasagna/parmagiana, Alfredo-style. This time, instead of mixing chopped spinach into the meat mix I picked a big handful of basil, minced it super-fine (bc it's on the tough side) and cooked it into the meat and the family thought it was tasty. It's still a PITA but at least I don't have an arm-sized zucchini on the countertop.

It's finally supposed to start cooling down there on the west coast, isn't it?

We got lucky over here too. Only 3 days of 90+ in a row instead of 4. Tomorrow is in the low 80's.

Now that I've been doing a much better job of just taking a little extra time to do a bit of tidying up in the kitchen and bathroom as I use it, my "chores" have become somewhat less of a chore. If I can keep that habit up this time, the days of letting those two rooms go until they're gross to walk into and take two days to scrub clean should be over. I really think there's a good chance of that happening now that so much work was done in the kitchen. It was easy to be a slob when those two rooms were already the worst looking rooms in the house no matter how much I cleaned them.

What REALLY helps though is the dry summer we're having. It's nice only having to mow the lawn once per week or less instead of 2-3 times per week.

Bugs and weeds haven't been nearly as much of a problem this year either, and although I've put spreader bug poison and the spray down once each, and I've sprayed for weeds twice already, it's about 1/3 the amount of applications I had to do last year by this time.

I'm not going to say anything about the moles because I don't want to jinx myself, but I'll just say that you haven't heard me talking about moles for a while.

Somewhat of a lazy day today here. I did manage to get both of my paint shifts on the final batch of doors done, but aside from a little cleanup I didn't do anything else.

There's still two fairly small yet stubborn stains that continue to bleed through the paint on one of the doors directly below the sink. I even put an extra dab of paint around the general area of them in between coats and it's still showing through. There's also a some on the inside border of the frame on the inside of the door that won't go away either. Kind of insane considering they've now had 3 coats of (supposedly) stain sealing primer with two coats of cabinet/trim enamel paint that also calls itself a paint and primer in one.

I really figured it would be the other door under the sink that would be the problem door, since that's the one that was cracked and needed to be glued and clamped. Actually, at this point you can hardly even notice there was ever a problem there now.

Since there's still going to be time while those doors are just sitting around waiting for me to finish the trim on the lower cabinets anyway, I'll probably just hit those two doors with an extra coat or two of paint and hope that it finally seals everything in.

It's so nice having wide open space in my living room again.

And actually, now that I've gone a half year without so much stuff in my kitchen cabinets, I think there's a good chance that half of the stuff in boxes in my attic that I haven't looked at or thought about since I packed them away in January are going to be dropped off at Goodwill instead of put back in my cabinets.

Hubby and I replaced a hallway light fixture today. The old one worked, but the glass cover had broken (I don't even recall how anymore) and so there were bare lightbulbs.

But like a lot of other things in this old house, what should have taken 30 minutes took 3+hours because the junction box was old-style and recessed rather deeply into the ceiling and the screws that came with the light fixture were 1/2" too short. So we tried using different fittings to bring the fixture or the adapter(?) that comes with the light fixture further out from the ceiling, but in the end we had to kluge it together with parts that were never intended for that.

Oh, for two 2 1/2" 8/32 screws!

Anyway, the fixture is up and the light works.

Now for the one in the breezeway.... I'm going to buy some long 8/32 screws, just in case!
