Yesterday, dear daughter nagged me into finally damp-mopping the LR and DR floors. I stuck with sweeping and vacuuming until now, but I know the dirt/dust around here tends to be pretty oily (too many freeways and high volume surface streets) so I knew the grunge was building up.

Made up a soln of 1 gal H2O, plus 1 c IPA and about 1 T Krud Kutter (grease formula) to help cut the grease, tested the mop to make sure it could still be squeezed out properly, and dear daughter got to work with the mopping while I cooked dinner and started making tomato sauce (tomatoes are really producing).

The floors look a lot shinier! Since dd also did the dusting there, those two rooms are really pleasant to be in.

Today, we finally got outside and I did the back lawn string trimming and sweeping up while dd watered the veggie garden. I guess I'll know tomorrow whether that was too much. But the backyard also looks pleasant (with the exception of one trouble spot)

KIKI, that trouble spot is a fallow part of my first veggie garden which has gotten full of crabgrass. But I have a large dark tarp that I bought with the idea of solarizing our woodpile (Hubby wound up doing something else with the wood) So I'm going to try solarizing that spot. I'll let you know how it works.

AFA that head to head comparison of pendimethalin v corn gluten: the

Three watering cycles layer... the corn gluten was able to stop most weed seeds from growing but not effective on palm tree seeds, whereas the pendimethalin worked on everything. I would prolly try corn gluten first and only resort to pendimethalin for resistant spots.

Also, been a lot more humid than normal lately. This is like the situation that started this whole thread, except we're earlier in the year! Zucchini has a case of downy mildew, looks like I'll need to spray with copper. But the avocado tree leaves are still green and luxuriant, so I guess the trick really was to get the "good bugs" out in mid-Apri, and not wait until June!

According to one witness, I believe they said that a freight train slammed on its brakes causing a spark to fly off the track. I guess the same thing must have happened with a second one because another witness said they saw a train on fire near the town of Boston Bar. They have found scorched railroad tracks in two spots, near Lytton and near Boston Bar. So we shall see.

Been meaning to defrost my small freezer in the breezeway, the one Stater Bros butcher so quaintly called my "meat locker". And there have been so few good meat sales lately that we've been kind of living out of the freezer but not restocking it. So today dear daughter and I defrosted the freezer bc it was mostly empty. Hopefully there will be some sales ahead that will allow restocking!

No longer taking ibuprofen regularly altho I still have to be careful how quickly I move my back. The yardwork made my back hurt a little but that was better by the next day. And, no shooting pains down my butt, groin and thigh.

So, out of the myriad of things I fell behind on over the past three weeks or so, I'm going to spin the roulette wheel and see what I come up with for today.

No, it's not. Fingers crossed when I get to talk to him, he will be a good fit.

I am caught up on my medical stuff until next year when I go in for my annual blood work for refills on my meds. Next mammogram isn't until 2023 because I go every 2 years for that. The only thing I really need to think about is the next check up for my hearing aides which I will make an appointment for in August or closer to the end of this month. That I have to do every couple of months.

Though now that I think about it next year I will have to go and see my eye doctor.

Looked at the weather forecast and decided that today and Friday would be best for outdoor work. So I spun the wheel and decided on weed whacking the patch of grass underneath the cape honeysuckle tree, Canary Island pine, and privet bush; raking the grass patch and sweeping the driveway (LOTS of pine needles and dead leaves) and hosing off the vehicles.

DD did the weed whacking, with my help, and I did the sweeping and vehicle hosing-off. It all looks a lot better now.

Cukes that I planted apparently HATE the summer. The only one doing OK is the one mostly in the shade, the rest are fried.

But I have an adventitious sunflower that popped up in the garden, and my cantaloupe are beginning to set fruit.

Anyway, aside from visual complexity/ reminding; when it comes to organizing, I'm of the 'into larger chunks' categories; but I'm even more particular about WHERE things are than HOW they're organized. 'Store it where you use it', 'keep it between waist and shoulder high', and 'drawers below, shelves above' are my ideals; also, since my area is very dusty, open shelves are NOT an ideal of mine. (Which is why I think the organizing system is too broad to capture what truly works for people.)

I watched the first half of the first episode, but I'm going to get back to it later. I want to get a start on my work for today.

I haven't seen all 4 of her basic types of organizing yet, but the one I saw that would be me would be the Cricket. Visual simplicity, with all of the stuff organized behind the scenes.

I think on one hand that it's foolish to try to put everybody into only 4 categories, but on the other hand you have to start somewhere. It's probably more like how they divvy up the entire Animal Kingdom with the Taxonomy system, and her 4 categories are like the Phylum below that.

I also think that the space you occupy and the amount of people you share it with (as well as their own organizational methods) have a lot to do with where you end up falling. When trying to classify myself, I find it a little difficult to really do because I can only really do it based on the space I've been occupying by myself for the last decade, and drawing only from memories of my past where I was in much smaller apartment spaces and/or shared my space with other people.

Right now? Visual simplicity is key for me, and is my end goal. I don't want things hung on the walls because after I repair and paint them I don't want to damage them. I've gotten rid of 1/2 of my wall hangings, and the ones that I know are worth money are now stored in bags and out of sight.

After getting rid of my vertical blinds over the picture window in my living room last week and putting up the privacy film, I no longer have any blinds on any windows. I don't intend to put them back up either, for two reasons. 1... I don't want to damage any of the work I've done mounting something else, and 2... It's just more clutter to clean and detracts from the work I'm doing. I feel the work I'm doing is art in and of itself and doesn't need wall accents.

Right now though, I have a luxury of an abundance of space. I'm able to keep things out of sight because there's plenty of places to put things where nobody will ever see them. But as I finish rooms in the house, that will be less space for me to put stuff.

So I really need to do something better out in the garage eventually. I have a lot of storage space out there, but it's not used very well. Old dressers you got for free can be a cheap and easy solution for storage, but you really end up losing half of your wall space by using them over pricier options like proper metal storage racks with bins.

Even though I was able to clean everything off of the curio cabinet, I still have about half of the stuff in the pantry that needs to be remodeled. I want to re-optimize the layout of that room, but I can't really visualize what I want until I clear it out first. And at least for a few years it should be okay for me to have 6 large benches I made out of pallets as shelving in the basement for tools and paint, but once I finally get the flooding issues completely taken care of I'm going to want to turn that back into a proper bedroom and all of that will have to go too. There is a very large closet for that room where I can set up 3 of those benches when I'm done, but I won't have the luxury of 6 benches anymore at that point.

Thanks for pointing out Hot Mess House. I probably never would have heard about it before.

I don't really think that it was made for me, since it's not grabbing me like Hoarders immediately did, but I'm still going to give it a proper watch and see if I get some good ideas out of it. It's already made me start thinking about some of my stuff differently and I'm only half an episode in.

Back from my walk and I actually had to put another shirt on over my t-shirt before I went out today. It was that cool. Lots of cloud cover where I am too so we shall see about the rain.

Now that I got the stuff out of the living room I can actually do some work in there and work around the stuff that stays with some drop cloths where they need to be.

I thought I'd just be prepping a few things before putting mud up over holes, but I decided to go ahead and remove the crappy old window casings below the window sills too. It wasn't easy. They nailed them to the wall then down through the sills too. The picture window went perfect, but I did split the sill on the small window. Nothing that a little wood glue and some 2.5" brad nails couldn't fix though. I need to extend those sills to accomodate trim anyhow, so they're already going to need repairs once that's done.

Mud is up and drying now.

I didn't do the wall where the entrance is yet. It's got a bit of damage by the floor underneath a very heavy and nicely framed mirror that's been hanging there for a decade. I really like that mirror and I think I'm going to keep it there. I'm going to sleep on that though, because leaving that up means I have to keep two heavy duty screws in heavy duty drywall anchors if I do.

Picked up some wood to frame out the smaller window. I shouldn't need to do that for the picture window before trim goes up.

This is exciting. The living room is going to go much quicker than the work in the kitchen has so far, and once I get the walls in both rooms painted I can get all the new trim up.

Anyway, aside from visual complexity/ reminding; when it comes to organizing, I'm of the 'into larger chunks' categories; but I'm even more particular about WHERE things are than HOW they're organized. 'Store it where you use it', 'keep it between waist and shoulder high', and 'drawers below, shelves above' are my ideals; also, since my area is very dusty, open shelves are NOT an ideal of mine. (Which is why I think the organizing system is too broad to capture what truly works for people.)

SIX: I watched the first half of the first episode, but I'm going to get back to it later. I want to get a start on my work for today.

I haven't seen all 4 of her basic types of organizing yet, but the one I saw that would be me would be the Cricket. Visual simplicity, with all of the stuff organized behind the scenes.

I think on one hand that it's foolish to try to put everybody into only 4 categories, but on the other hand you have to start somewhere. It's probably more like how they divvy up the entire Animal Kingdom with the Taxonomy system, and her 4 categories are like the Phylum below that.

I also think that the space you occupy and the amount of people you share it with (as well as their own organizational methods) have a lot to do with where you end up falling. When trying to classify myself, I find it a little difficult to really do because I can only really do it based on the space I've been occupying by myself for the last decade, and drawing only from memories of my past where I was in much smaller apartment spaces and/or shared my space with other people.

Right now? Visual simplicity is key for me, and is my end goal. I don't want things hung on the walls because after I repair and paint them I don't want to damage them. I've gotten rid of 1/2 of my wall hangings, and the ones that I know are worth money are now stored in bags and out of sight.

After getting rid of my vertical blinds over the picture window in my living room last week and putting up the privacy film, I no longer have any blinds on any windows. I don't intend to put them back up either, for two reasons. 1... I don't want to damage any of the work I've done mounting something else, and 2... It's just more clutter to clean and detracts from the work I'm doing. I feel the work I'm doing is art in and of itself and doesn't need wall accents.

Right now though, I have a luxury of an abundance of space. I'm able to keep things out of sight because there's plenty of places to put things where nobody will ever see them. But as I finish rooms in the house, that will be less space for me to put stuff.

So I really need to do something better out in the garage eventually. I have a lot of storage space out there, but it's not used very well. Old dressers you got for free can be a cheap and easy solution for storage, but you really end up losing half of your wall space by using them over pricier options like proper metal storage racks with bins.

Even though I was able to clean everything off of the curio cabinet, I still have about half of the stuff in the pantry that needs to be remodeled. I want to re-optimize the layout of that room, but I can't really visualize what I want until I clear it out first. And at least for a few years it should be okay for me to have 6 large benches I made out of pallets as shelving in the basement for tools and paint, but once I finally get the flooding issues completely taken care of I'm going to want to turn that back into a proper bedroom and all of that will have to go too. There is a very large closet for that room where I can set up 3 of those benches when I'm done, but I won't have the luxury of 6 benches anymore at that point.

Thanks for pointing out Hot Mess House. I probably never would have heard about it before.

I don't really think that it was made for me, since it's not grabbing me like Hoarders immediately did, but I'm still going to give it a proper watch and see if I get some good ideas out of it. It's already made me start thinking about some of my stuff differently and I'm only half an episode in.

I think I'm a bit of both. Some things I organize in detail, like (some) paperwork. Other things, like underwear .... am I really gonna separate the colors? My email, however, is a complete mess bc I can't figure our which categories are meaningful, and that ones I create today will be defunct in two years.

Same with "out of sight" v visual. If it doesn't need attention or is not used mutiple imes a week, it goes out of sight. If it's something I need to pay attention to or use often, it stays where I can see it.

My organizing is all wrapped around my crappy memory. I have to put things in places that make sense, in categories that I can remember.

When the fires were really bad here last year, we had lots of 'cloud' cover that actually dropped the temperature ~15F and made the days noticebaly dim.

That's me, too. That's why I think her 4 categories are kind of limited. There are a lot of reasons why people do what they do, and the decisions can split different ways depending on what's being dealt with.

Oh, yeah, there's another 2 things to add to my generic list of 'musts' when it comes to storage:

One is to have cabinets and shelves in sets that are visibly different, either with finish or arrangements of doors and drawers. Here's what that avoids - an entire wall of drawers and doors that all look the same ... where you have to start thinking and counting ... is the whisk in the third top drawer from the left? Let's see ... one ... two .. three ...

The other is to have really wide drawers, even though that means they need to be extra sturdy, with extra supports, and have heavy-duty hardware. That way you don't have to keep opening multiple drawers to find things.

Hey Jack - when it comes to garage storage, I really recommend drawers or pull-out shelves below waist high. The reason being that lower cabinets tend to be deeper, which makes the shelves below them deeper, which means getting to stuff on the shelves or even seeing it is REALLY difficult, especially if it's in the back - and that means things tend to get 'lost' even when you have them nicely stored.

Also, I personally am going to install metal (not Masonite or plastic) pegboard (not the brand with square holes because that makes it incompatible with standard pegboard fittings) on the interior side of several closet doors.

Have you thought about pegboard at all?

Got about a minute's worth of rain in my area after 6pm. Just enough to dampen things a little bit. Still fairly heavy cloud cover so there could be more in store before I go to bed tonight.

Where I am these are more like rain clouds. Haven't smelt any smoke where I am. Wind has been blowing some of it into Alberta I think, southern area like Calgary.

I've always considered pegboard, but never really had a plan for it. Even with my 2.5 car garage, wall space is rather limited and there are mostly large yardwork tools hung on that wall. Maybe whenever I get my shed back to functioning I can better utilize that wall space.

Ideally, I'd like to replace all of those dressers on the one wall with shelving units that have labeled totes on them. Not only would that keep the dust out of everything, but it would be easy to pull them out without needing drawers.

I'm probably not against drawers if the space is used efficiently, but the dressers I have now are all on bricks because the garage used to get water on that side before I patched everything, and they have a lot of dead space on the bottom before the first drawer and a lot of dead space in between units because of the profile. They're just not good for the task.
