Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Thanks for the head-up, Signy! I didn't hear the rain last night, but my cachepot rain gauge indicates a scant 1/4" of rain. I sure hope we get more. I don't think I'm in a flood-prone area, since I'm near the top of a hill.

I've been checking my 10-day forecast at wunderground. And they did predict a small chance of rain for my area. I don't know about yours. But then - looking at the 10-day weather, barometer, etc predictions, it looked like we were then going to be coming under a high pressure system shortly afterwards and for the 8 of the rest of the 10 days. And looking at the fronts and wind maps at wunderground, I could see a high pressure system to the east of us. So I was wondering if it was going to move westward, which seems really unusual, but that's what the last high pressure system did! Anyway, I was listening to the weather forecast yesterday as I was driving around running errands. They did predict 'monsoonal moisture', but they said the high pressure system was going to 'expand' westward to cover us.

I thought I'd pass that along since you might make better sense of it than I do.

Unexpected, unpredicted RAIN! In late July!

I wouldn't have expected it. Yesterday started out with quite a bit of stratus cloud cover and cooler temps (low 80s), and wound up even cooler with less cloud cover and a bit of a breeze, so I thought ... well, there must have been a mild cool front passing thru, the fun is done and now we're on the backside and can expect a warming back up to what it was before. Rain was the last thing on my mind.

Well, it tells me I picked the right day to water. One thing about CA natives ... COOL and damp, they can do. Hot and DRY, they can do. But they don't like water when the soil temperature is above 80, so I pick the coolest day of the week for the once-a-month watering, and water at night. Clearly, this was the coolest day of the MONTH, and the water came naturally, adding to whatever I had irrigated and driving moisture even further down into the soil. Plus, it washed dust off all of the leaves.

Happy plants!

Happy me.

OMG I had no idea you'd been without rain for so long.
Here in SoCal we kind of expect not to see any from March to November, but I've always thought of our northwest and the rainward side of the Canadian Rockies as being green and in some places lush.

Wow, that's really terrible.

40 days sure flew by fast...

It seems like just yesterday I was commenting that we must be having the same weather pattern, Brenda.

Apparently we've diverged somewhere along the way.

Not exactly wet here anymore, since it's so gorram hot, but it was still wet enough that it's still so gorram humid too.

We'll be getting back to more comfortable temps later in the week here.

Hope you get some rain!

Sorry to say it has. When we get rain the Pacific Northwest and BC is lush and green but not so much right now.

I'm hoping that we will get some before the end of Summer. If we do I will welcome it for sure.

Still far too warm in BC. Where I am is getting warnings about smoke drifting down IF the winds change direction. Have to see.

Me too. Though closer to the Rockies in the southeast corner of the province they are hopefully getting some rain in the next day or two.

We even managed to get a teensy bit overnight which didn't do much here but ensure an already hot and humid day was going to stay humid.

Yeah. Seems like that's the case every year, at least with the Western US states.

We're actually a little short on rain this year though. Not a drought anymore, but it was for about 3 weeks a while back.

Too bad somebody hasn't come up with an economical way to divert the water where it needs to go yet.

We're short where I am in BC too on rain. As I said a few days ago it is over 40days without rain where I am.

Temps where I am have crept up into the low 90s. Currently at 2pm it is 94F.

There are huge fires burning in Lebanon and Turkey, and Kazakhstan is in serious drought.

So just to get an idea of global drought, I found an international drought monitor which shows a swath of drought across Italy, Turkey, N Lebanon, n Iran, Kazakhstan, and parts of southern Russia

There is another area of drought in equatorial Africa.

But those are somewhat patchy. The really intense drought is from northern half of USA thru the southern half of Canada, from the east coast to the west. The west coast drought is barely a blip compared to the swath covering the middle latitudes of north America.

Caught a poor little mouse without killing it yesterday. I was actually there to hear the trap go off which never happens, and then I heard the whining and the carnage.

At first, I thought I'd have to do a mercy kill, but it appeared to have way too much life in it for that. I believe the plastic jaws trap only got it slightly on the foot from what I could see. It was certainly terrified when I picked up the trap to take it outside, and I was doing whatever I could to keep it from crawling up the trap and possibly biting me (do they do that????)

It bolted like a bat out of hell the second I released the trap. Right between my legs and into the dark... actually making me jump it was so quick.

It'll probably be okay. It probably won't ever try coming back into my place again... although I don't know how stupid they are. They're nowhere near as clever as raccoons.

The good news is that I'm sure I know where they're coming from now. As soon as the trap went off, it tried running right back the way it came... through the rubber sweep under the back door that appears to have been chewed through by other mice, presumably. It couldn't make it because it had the trap in tow and was probably just hurting itself more by frantically trying.

Repairing and repainting that door is on the kitchen remodel agenda, so I just need to buy a quality sweep that would be hard for a mouse to chew through.

They're all healthcare professionals, even the doctor that you work for part time.

A lot of turnover at our medical facilities, too. I've gotten four letters in the past month or so about doctors retiring or going elsewhere.

I think there was some sort of unspoken commitment or expectation that doctors "stand their post" during the big summer peak of cases and deaths, but now that most vulnerable people are vaccinated and deaths have barely budged even as cases have zoomed up, doctors feel (or were) released from their positions.

Yes, they are.

The lady doctor that I work for was giving hints around the end of 2020 sort of that she was thinking about retiring.

My family doctor sent out letters letting all her patients know that she was retiring.

The audiologist though there was no warning from him. I was just into see him with my new hearing aides after the beginning of June and he said to come back in 2 months to make sure they are okay.

I'm sure the same thing was expected of doctors up here in BC too.

Overall, how are your fires doing up there, Brenda? Are crews getting a handle on them? I hope you all get rain up there soon.

For myself, rain at this time of year down here would be nothing less than a miracle, so here we just need to hunker down and hope that the rest of the fire season isn't too bad, and that we have a good rainy season to end this drought.

Maybe your audiologist got sick (or died)? I'd hate to think so, but I've heard of that happening more than once in the case of a doctor unexpectedly leaving a practice.

With just the floor to go to getting the bathroom scrubbed and organized top to bottom and set up with a bathtub bench (and minus doing any shelving, which needs some thought), I did derail on the project to do other things.

There are still over 240 fires burning and some seem to be under control. Apparently there was some rain in Vancouver this morning. There is some rain heading for the Interior but again it is coming with lighting. So that is iffy at best.

The weather people say rain for where I am next week now moved to Thursday evening into Friday.

I have no idea as I have only been dealing with this hearing office this year. That is possible. I hope I will find out something when I go next Friday.

But the bathroom is now done.

YAY!!

GOOD NEWS!

The weather people say rain for where I am next week now moved to Thursday evening into Friday.

I have no idea as I have only been dealing with this hearing office this year. That is possible. I hope I will find out something when I go next Friday.

Good luck with the rain!

Good luck with getting info!

Wish I could say the same! Right now am stuck on the "lather-rinse-repeat" side of things.

I WILL say, tho, that my "summer schedule" is very do-able. I get my yardwork done in the AM and I have time to do my indoor work later. I can only chip away at the yardwork an hour at a time... sometimes less if I get up too late ... but I can see progress. Day before I tore up the cukes (fried) and put away their tomato cages, trimmed all of the heavily-infected leaves from the zucchini and did some veggie-garden weeding. Yesterday I pruned up/out the tomatoes to open up the middle bc attacks by slugs and sprayed the zucchini with copper.

Also saw some golden aphids on the milkweed but was reluctant to spray bc there may be monarch eggs in there, but saw a ladybug in the zucchini. I was hoping it would make its way over to the milkweed, which it did: yesterday it was on the milkweed and happily munching on aphids.

Just a lazy evening for me after my walk this morning then getting the recycling out.

Though that was bit of chore as the elevator that goes down to the parking where the recycling and garbage bins are was out of order today. Had to walk down just 1 flight of stairs to get there then walk back up to the lobby to get the working elevator back to my floor.

Oh, well Signy, my 'done' was a very small one. But at least there's that.

I had a few other problems show up in the meantime, after the utility sink broke (and it's still broken). I temporarily switched to the bathroom sink, But drain problems showed up that I never had before, specifically with the tub and sink, growing and evolving over time. The sink became slow, so I cleared it with chemicals. Then the tub got even slower than usual - then stopped draining entirely. So I tried to clear it with chemicals, and it worked, sort of. Then the sink drain started backing up into the tub. Obviously they share a common outlet, and I think the individual clogs may have just moved on down the pipes a bit, to a pipe shared by the both of them. I was just hoping that the toilet wasn't going to start backing up into the tub, too. Fortunately, it didn't. But at that point I was considering getting a snake and taking the sink out and clearing the pipes that way. But I did a little more reading and Draino max gel got a lot of good comments about clearing hair and soap deposits, especially from old, rusty, iron drain pipes. So I went with that. The sink is now perfectly clear, and doesn't back up into the tub. And the tub is much improved. I'd feel better if it was perfect, but so far, so good.

Anyway, that triggered the bathroom cleanup, plus the bathtub bench came in that I wanted to install.

I still have a LOT of 'daily' stuff to catch up on.

But first I need to clear out some larger tasks. I have about 11 bags of glass CRV bottles to give to the guys at the recycling place. (I just moved 9 full ones of them into my car today for tomorrow, the other 2 I'll add to before I take them out.) I did a fair bit of bulk (heavy) shopping today; but I still need to get some stuff, which is both 'stocking up' as well as partial earthquake supply; and I need to do my regular shopping. Plus there are 3 large baskets full of laundry - that includes a bunch of clothes I'm getting ready for donation.

Once I get those bigger things done which are somewhat pressing, I'll be back to my daily routine, which includes about an hour of yardwork a day - a schedule I got from you! Plus I'll set aside time to finally, finally! get to fixing or replacing the pull-down hose on the utility sink. Or if I have to replace the hose and it's not interchangeable with available parts, replacing the sink entirely.

Oh, and I'm back to eating a pre-made meal every day. Boy are they good! Today I had the Greek-style crustless pie of ground turkey, onion, kale, potato, egg, and feta, with lemon juice and herbs*; yesterday I had my chicken, bell pepper, and onion fajita meal with home-made fajita mix. I wonder, what else is in there? I've forgotten.

*If you're interested, I made a version I think everyone in your family can eat - substitute spinach for kale and quinoa for potatoes. If anything, it's even lighter and fluffier on the inside, and has a more delicately crisper, more evenly toasted outside than the original.

I missed my walk along the boardwalk today but that is okay. Still plenty of summer for that.

But on the flip side had lunch with one of the ladies I play mah jong with and she is already for Thursday. So, that's good.

Feeling a lot better after I crapped out the body weight of a large cat yesterday.

Must have ate something terrible. Or maybe the prison planet we're facing in our future is just getting to me...

Just OOC... SIX"s post about feeling better made me wonder: Do you guys have anyone who can look out for you IRL?

Is there anyone who sees you on a regular basis who would come looking if you were to NOT show up when expected?

Accidents happen, and people get sick. If there is no one to look out for you, could you set up a buddy system with someone?

Somebody'd eventually come around, but it might take a while.

I'd never want to be that close to any of my neighbors where we'd be checking up on each other, and there's been a lot of times in the past where I'd just drop off and not communicate with anyone for prolonged periods of time.

It's been quite a while since I did that, but nobody ever came trying to figure that out in the past so I doubt they'd think much of it if it happened again.

I've grown pretty close with the old man over the last few years. If he hasn't heard from me in 3 or so days he calls me. If I was ignoring his calls and never calling him back he'd probably do a drop in.

Yup, had some money squirelled away and found a set at a reasonable price in Walmart. No more head sets and no need for sub-woofer.
