Heating up here again too, altho according to long term weather (next 5 days) we may see some "monsoonal moisture". Possibly that will bring some t-storms to the deserts?

I was very happy with the new dentist.

He was happy with my teeth! He commented more than once ... "You have all of your teeth except the upper wisdoms" and "You have really good teeth" and (to the tech) "I'll do it myself, I'm not expecting much based on what I've seen," [X-rays]

Small practice: one dentist, two (?) chairs. I guess bc I was a new patient he did everything himself: scaling, measuring my gum pockets, fkossing, exam and polishing, plus full set of x-rays.

He also works with the intellectually impaired/autistic spectrum. His wife and daughter are both special ed teachers and he's the fill-in coach for a baseball team of primarily spectrum young people.

So once we see the bill, if it's not outrageous we'll make an appointment for dear daughter.

There are between 250 to 270 wildfires burning in BC as of today. And it looks like another small town is maybe being threatened by the White Rock Lake fire (this is the biggest one burning). Evacuation warnings posted for the town of Pritchard, that is the latest community under threat.

I am so hoping that another community isn't destroyed or partially destroyed by fire this year.

BC Wildfire services says they expect another month of dry, hot weather with little to no rain. That pushes fire season through September into early October.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

It's definitely been heating up here. So far the daytime highs have been about the same, so I notice it most in the fact that the nights are no longer cooling down like they were. That means day-to-day the house and yard will be gradually heating up because not all of the heat from the previous day will be lost.

I think it's all stressful for you. I knows that's how I feel with this drought down here.

Lately I've been looking into power equipment for the yard. So I just bought a Mantis rototiller. Now, I know nuthin' about nuthin' about rototillers. So basically I looked at as many kinds as I could find, and read about their 'features' in order to try and get a basic idea of what's out there and what the capabilities, drawbacks, and fail points are. And I stumbled over a mention that the Mantis rototiller has reversible tines so that rather than cultivating 9" deep one can cultivate 3" deep. Well, that's what I want to do! And now I'm an INSTANT EXPERT! And the proud not-quite owner of a new rototiller. (ordered but not received)

The next thing I'm looking at are the chipper-shredders for all the tree removal and limb-trimming I'm going to be doing. I gathered a lot of rating and review articles, and bookmarked as many different brands and models as I could find - at least 35 - and started sifting through the info to see what I could learn. And since I couldn't find one distinguishing feature that made any one brand or model clearly better than any other, I'm still working on creating a set of criteria that are meaningful to me.
So far I've gotten
Power gas v electric - GAS/ 4CYCLE ENGINE
Capacity - AT LEAST A 3" DIAMETER BRANCH
Tow-able - NO
Weight - LESS THAN 200lbs
Rating - NO MORE THAN 10% UNDER 3 STARS
So I'll continue on, narrowing my ever-shrinking list down by reading and pondering 'what does this mean to me and how I'll be using it'.

And I'm working on giving my trees their monthly watering. I have some VERY lovely crape myrtles. And when I look at them in the AM, I see they have all sorts of pollinators on the flowers. So even though they don't have fruits that birds or animals might enjoy, they have an environmental benefit because they have summer a bloom period, a rarity compared to many native SoCal plants that go quiet in the summer. I have a natural cross in my front yard, between a large white-blooming Natchez USDA hybrid, and what I think is a smaller species tree with deep rose-pink blossoms. The self-sown one has the most lovely frosty-raspberry pink blossoms with bluish undertones, kind of like the color milk turns after you pour it over raspberries. It's just loaded with buds waiting to break open, right as the Natchez is winding down to smaller blossom clusters. So the pollinators will have a good succession of flowers.

This is roughly what my Natchez crape myrtle looks like in full bloom.

This is the closest equivalent I could find for my natural cross.

And I've been pondering what small trees or large shrubs should I plant where. I've gone back and forth over the choices, But at this point I'm pretty sure I want to plant cuttings from my small rose-pink blossom crape myrtle tree on either side of the front sidewalk. Because I really want to and because the front yard is a good spot for crape myrtles - sunny which increases the blossoms, and airy which decreases powdery mildew.

As to what I'm going to plant on both sides of the house, I'll experiment with sambucus ssp. cerulea, an elderberry and one of the rare natives with a long summer blooming period.

But they'll be a complete experiment. And I'm prepared just in case they don't grow the way I need them to.

This morning I saw a mockingbird (expected) and a scrub jay (unexpected) experimentally picking at the ripening cherries that are on my Catalina Island and hollyleaf cherry trees.

Out for my walk in a bit. Should do some clothes shopping but it depends on which direction I head in. If I go to the one near the river, I will take a walk by it. So we shall see.

Pacific Northwest braces for another multiday heat wave

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — People in the Pacific Northwest braced for another major, multiday heat wave starting Wednesday, just over a month after record-shattering hot weather killed hundreds of the region’s most vulnerable people when temperatures soared to 116 degrees Fahrenheit (47 Celsius).

In a “worst-case scenario,” the temperature could reach as high as 111 F (44 C) in some parts of western Oregon by Friday before a weekend cooldown, the National Weather Service in Portland, Oregon, warned this week. It’s more likely temperatures will rise above 100 F (38 C) for three consecutive days, peaking around 105 F (40.5 C) on Thursday.

Back and got my walk in along the river. River was busy today. 2 tug boats were tied up then went out onto the water. Couple of cargo ships were being unloaded I think. Tide was low as I could see a stretch of sand under the boardwalk where I was. One tug churned up so much water in its wake that I could smell some of the salt from the sea water coming in. Even saw a fish leap partially out of the water 3 times.

Nothing in the thrift store that would suit me, but the walk along the water was nice.

Yup, they are talking about 40 degree temps in the Lower Fraser Valley for up here. Thankfully it won't be lasting that long. Cool down here by the weekend.

Always things popping up. We need to have the house treated for termites, but b4 that need to trim all vegetation away from the house by one foot. Started on that yesterday but hubby needed help gluing up the bedframe today .... a 7-piece 3D jigsaw puzzle that needed all of us to line up for clamping.

So back to trimming tomorrow, then grocery shopping in the afternoon.

It's downright tropical here.

Fortunately it's holding up well. Not bad for a cheapie portable that's got to be at least 5 years old!

I set it up to 78 when I get up, and close the bedroom door. That room is my heat-relief room during the day. At nite I open up all the windows I can (not the bedroom), and set the AC down to 73 or 74.

BTW, I haven't yet gotten a regular 3" tatami mat as a mattress, so I'm still using a thin 3/4" tatami mat on top of the foam mattress, and it ventilates very nicely.

My darn cat had me going for a while today. I was bringing in some things I'd ordered that'd been out from the store for a few weeks. And I was trying to be very careful not to let him out, due to all the cars, and, mostly - the coyotes.

But when I finally got everything in the house, I didn't see him. I looked through the house - and I mean top to bottom and under - 4X. And In between I was going outside trying to see if I could spot him anywhere.

Well, last time he got out I didn't get him back in till ~4AM from about 400 feet away.

So I resigned myself to a long night, and started doing some computer work. And after a half hour he came sidling in looking for a petting.

I was SO relieved he wasn't out! But where the heck did he hide himself?

Next pet will be a fish.

a What's it like in your apartment?

I think I read somewhere that you DON'T have AC, right? You're pretty high up, so do you at least catch breezes?

And just because I'm nosy... here, when it's hot, it's usually dry. This summer has been unusually humid, kind of like the Summer that started this whole thread. But what about where you live? Hot and dry? Or hot and humid?

No, I don't have AC in my apartment but I do have a fan in the living room and all curtains. I don't open the living room ones until the sun starts to move.

Yup, I'm up on the tenth floor but I don't have any windows open cause I am out for several hours most days running errands or if I am working.

This year it has been hot and humid. Farther away from the water you get in my area of BC the more humid it gets.

ETA: That's why Vancouver has misting stations set up through the city and cooling stations too. My city, the local library and the senior's centre that I play mah jong at have both been designated as cooling stations.

Thanks for satisfying my curiosity!

Yesterday the heat wave overachieved its prediction. It was supposed to be in the low 90s, but when we left to go grocery shopping at 3PM the car thermometerread 100F, and on the way home at 5PM ... when it's normally cooling ... it was actually hotter, at 102F. Wunderground shows a pulse of hot dry air spreading out from the desert at about that time, altho it reversedagain after a couple of hours and went back to being humid.

There was a dad and his 12(?) year old son on bikes cooling off in the shade of our cape honeysuckle tree when I went to lock up the car, and they looked HOT. So I asked them if they knew how hot it was, and since they didn't know I told them that the car thermometer was reading 102F. They told me that they were just heading tothe MiddleSchool to get some books, which wasn't far by bike ... a mile or two. But they looked SO hot I went inside and got them each a Powerade, since I didn't have any bottled water to hand out. I hope they made it there and back OK.

I think you can feel glad Canada handled COVID-19 the way it did, and - so far, anyway - you can freely get back to your normal life.

US ~187.9K deaths per 100K

It was a good day. I had to wait a bit at the skytrain station for one friend. She's moved into another city that is farther from me. We haven't seen each other in 7years. She looked good then we got on the sky train to cross the river. "Sky train" is what we call our rapid light transit. The route we were on was all elevated.

We got off at our stop and our other friend met us at station. It was just a couple of blocks walk to her basement suite. The friend who lives in Surrey called her mom's assisted living place and she was sent over in a taxi.

We had some snacks, talked, laughed about high school, listened to some music and talked with her mom a bit.

It was a good afternoon but with all the smoke and heat in the air even a short 2 block walk was rough on one of my friends. She's had heart surgery in the last few years and we had to stop a couple of times coming and going so she could catch her breath.

Good deal!BRENDA.

Not so much fun here. I got a late start but finally got around to digging up some of the fern and azalea bush that was within a foot of the house, and helped hubby stump the bird of paradise, cut up (another) fallen star pine limb and palm frond. Binned up as much as I could -filled all three bins- out at the curb for tomorrow's pickup, and then I get to fill them all over again.

But first, I need to buy a harness for puppy wuppy. On the treatment day we will be heading off to a dog friendly coastal park. She can pull out of her collar pretty easily, and it would be awful to lose her in such a big public space so far from home! So harness and leash it is.

Then I have to call neuro's office and see if they can provide care for both dear daughter and hubby, and also Terminix and schedule a treatment.

Got the dreaded call from the mammo office; they want another scan bc "something" plus an ultrasound. Prolly changes to the seroma ... I really should have that drained ... So hope that's all that it is.

Get yourself a set of cordless Ryobi tools. The starter kit I chose had a recriprocal saw with it.

Lightweight, especially if you use the 1.5ah or 2.0ah batteries that come with the starter set. I little heavier if you have a 4ah or 6ah bad boy in there.

Last year I dug around all of those maple stumps and cut them all out with my corded DeWalt, but even though Ryobi isn't as good as DeWalt I think I would have had an easier time with my new one.

Good luck.

Coastal park sounds nice and I can understand the harness for the puppy. It would be a shame if she got lost.

I hope your next scan is nothing more than what you think.

My Monday morning starts off with a virtual appointment with this new family doctor that I hope will take me on as a patient. I've checked their website and feel fairly confident in getting everything to work. *fingers crossed*

After that and I don't know how long it will last, I can go out for a walk. And I might need an umbrella. Weather people calling for rain tomorrow and into Tuesday. Here's to hoping that it arrives.

BRENDA

Virtual meeting with doctor didn't happen as this refurbished computer doesn't have a mike or a camera. So, I have to go in and talk to the office and set something else up.

BRENDA

We've got rain here.

Also because I can't do a virtual intake meeting with the doctor, I have an in-person appointment for early October which is okay.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

I've been plugging away despite the heat.

But today I just could NOT wake up! I tried, and tried - got up a few times, but ended up falling asleep sitting up. So I slept till 4. I guess today is my Sunday day of rest to do nothing but kick back and relax, whether it's on my schedule or not.

Brenda, how are the fires doing in Canada? And did rain reach any interior provinces?
