I don't need anything sturdy. It's just standard kitchen drawers that wouldn't have much weight in them. I just need to know distance for side-mounted drawer slides. (Maybe they're not universal, which would suck... but that would be good to know too). I can't use a simple bottom mount slide unfortunately, since the openings are so small vertically.

I haven't bothered to figure out to post pix, yet. Just haven't had the time and focus. Where do you post pix to? I'm sure I could figure it out by doing a "reply with quote" and looking at your links, but if you get me started it would save me a lot of time. Sorry and thanks!

I just go to imgbb.com

You can just drag and drop the images from explorer to there, or hit the upload button and navigate to the folder on your computer. You can put multiple pics at once to save time.

Once you've done that, click on each image and it will open in another window. But the window it opens in will not display them here, it will just make a clickable link that will open the images in another tab.

In order to get the link that you'd need to display the pictures in the post, you need to then right click on the image and click on "open in another tab". Then you will get just the image and that link is the one that you can copy and paste into the thread where it will show up here.

Let me know if any of that was unclear to you and I'll get back to you.

Over the past three weeks I've basically come up with a bfast that's tasty, good for us (well, for hubby and me anyway) and tolerates a lot of variation: bean and vegetable soup. Hubby usually has a sandwich, too

One cup of beans, 1/2 to 1 c veggies (depending on what's on hand), boxed chicken broth, salt, and various seasonings. Garlic, parsley, paprika. Or cumin, onions, and paprika. Or oregano, tomato, and basil (faux minestrone). All I need to do I cook up a huge pot of beans every four days, and keep boxed chicken broth and frozen veggies in hand.

Shivery weather,BRENDA! I hope the weather turns around for you soon!

I enjoyed walking with the dog too! The weather was brisk (for CA anyway) at about 58 deg, and kind of breezy, but sunny. It was nice.

Managed to help stage the bedframe in the bedroom for final assembly. Also managed to dust the house. Tomorrow more presurgical tests.

Winter always finds us at some point. Stay warm.

50 here today, but probably going to have more rain by this afternoon than Sigs and Kiki are going to see until the end of march, then it's back in the low 20's tomorrow.

At least we keep getting warm enough days to melt most of the snow before we get pummeled again this year.

Didn't do anything today even though it was warm ... and wet.

Got about 4 errands to run tomorrow and then I'm going over to my friend's house to install a new fan and light in his bathroom. It should be easy. He wants to surprise his wife before she gets back in town.

I suppose that's something. I forgot how miserable winter could be. That's bc I left when I was 20-ish, and didn't have to work/ drive/ run errands in it very much, and it was still fun.

Good luck at your friend's house. I hope the project goes smoothly!

Managed to mop and vacuum most of the hard floors today. So between that, dusting, and toilet scrubbing the housework is virtually done.

Good thing too bc I pressed the surgeon's PA for details on recovery, and they don't even want me washing dishes or walking a 9.5 lb dog for 2 weeks

And no yardwork for at least 6 weeks, maybe longer

Don't know what I'm going to do except go stir crazy. There's only so much internet I can tolerate and so much dust I can stand looking at. Maybe I'll get some quality time learning gimp, and FINALLY being able to make a landscape plan? At least that would be useful.

Thanks. Me too. I've done a few of these before, and sometimes you luck out and everything works just fine. Other times it ends up being a big project because Uncle Bob screwed everything up and hid it all. I'm fairly confident my friend could do this on his own, but I'm happy to come by and do it and get out of the house.

I ended up doing more errands than I thought and taking care of a few phone calls I needed to make about things that I probably should have gotten around to earlier. It's already been a super productive day, relatively speaking to most of the rest of the year so far outside of the curio cabinet, closet and pantry work.

But boy... was it cold out. low 20's didn't feel so bad last week, but after 3 days in teh 40's and 50's and with the wind howling today it was probably not the day to be doing all that driving around. Glad it's done now though.

I didn't go to Menards to look at drawer slides today like I wanted to, but that was more because the two recent sale ads are garbage and I'm not in a huge hurry to get there because of that. Good Will is having a 40% off sale on Saturday, so I plan on doing them both then.

It's supposed to be sunny and 12 degrees warmer than it is right now.

I have noticed on occasion that if I happened to post the 50th post on a page, and then within a few minutes I have edited it to put in an addition or correct something that wasn't worded well, which I often do, that when I click on the button to make the edit I'm in a blank page.

It seems to be a quirk of the site.

It seems when this happens the thread gets another post added to the counter even though there was no "51st" post, and the "blank page" your put into when this happens is the next page for the thread, even though you didn't make the post that should be the first post on the next page.

I've only ever noticed this when editing the last "50th" post on a thread.

If you look around, you're sure to find quite a few threads where the count is off because of this.

I assume you're only noticing this now because after 10,000 posts and nearly 200 pages the amount of extra, non-existent posts have really added up over time.

Well...

The exhaust fan fix for my friend went nearly as bad as could be expected if you don't account for the fact that in the end I managed to fix it.

The old fan was OLD. It was OG construction attached, which means that I found out in 2 minutes that there was no way to take it out from inside the nice clean bathroom and I needed to go in the attic. He'd also not bought a replacement fan for existing construction, so in order not to damage the ceiling both the removal and the installation would all need to be done in the attic.

And in the attic I went for the next 90 minutes, literally swimming in insulation.

Had to unscrew the old one by hand because of all of the things in the way of the drill at the angle the screws were set in. Not a fun or easy task to do when leverage is terrible up against a sun roof window and there's so much insulation you can't even see where the joists are.

The fan was also tied into a light over the shower with Romex, and my friend didn't even mention before I'd reinstalled everything that the light had stopped working about half a year ago. So when I was back down and we installed the light it didn't work. My voltage tester came up with nothing.

But the weird thing was that all of the slack in the attic on that romex wasn't present when I pulled at the Romex from the hole for the new shower light or from inside the fan mount... What the hell?

So I had to go back up.

And then I discovered it was two lines of romex that went down into the insulation and through a small hole in wood.

I asked my friend if there was an outlet or a switch over the toilet, since that's the location that it seemed to be going down. He said "neither, but there's a reset button here". I didn't even know what he was talking about, but I said does it look like an outlet? and he said it did.

I said that's it. I'm coming down, we need to open that.

He'd already taken the cover off by the time I came down, but he didn't need to. It was a GFCI box, but without plugs. I'd never even seen one of these before. But they installed them in all 3 of his bathrooms over the toilets, I'm sure as a safety measure in case something went wrong with the light over the shower (and the fact that they SHOULD NOT HAVE USED ROMEX FOR THIS JOB).

His daughter hasn't had a light in her shower for half a year now because they didn't know to hit the RESET button.

After that, installed the new light, got the fan back in and the cover on and it's all as good as new.

Got free pizza tonight, my buddy is taking me to an all you can eat buffet next week at the Hard Rock, and his wife was so thrilled on the phone when he showed her what I did she said she's making dinner for me when she gets back in town. She's a damn good cook, so I'm looking forward to it. I just as convinced she's working magic in the kitchen as she's convinced I was when I did the job tonight.

My buddy also said that any time I need his truck to pick up anything I need for my house he's just a call away.

There wasn't any in the forecast as of this morning, but now I'm seeing another 6 gorram inches tomorrow night.

have helped replace a number of light fixtures in the original construction and addition and they have all had ceiling mounted brackets. The new fixtures have holes that match up to the old brackets, and altho it is a pita to find the old holes with the new screws (we turn the new screws in a little into the old bracket, attach long twist ties to help us find the head end of the, screw so we can poke it thru the insulation that's part of the new fixture and thread it thru the new fixture bracket) it's always been a ceiling job. Clearly something I don't understand about this fan!

I'd never even seen one of these before

Never seen THAT b4 eirher!!

I learned about that one early! We had an outlet in the breezeway that was dead. Finally found the GFI on the INSIDE hallway wall . Apparently they had pulled an outlet from the inside thru the wall to the outside (breezeway), but since there was water nearby they had to add a GFI.

In looking around I see the same thing living room to patio, and back bedroom to back sidewalk.

OG = "Original Gangster". Slang.

In this case, I meant that it was a fan that was meant for original construction. It had "wings" on the side that gets attached to a joist which the screws went through, so there was no way to get to it without busting out the ceiling or doing it from the attic.

I haven't done a ton of these, but every time I have the screws or nails were put into the box inside the fan housing, so once you removed them it came right out of the ceiling. This was new for me.

The fan he bought to replace it had the wings too, so that had to be installed from the attic as well.

Have you ever replaced an exhaust fan in the bathroom? This isn't a ceiling fan and/or light fixture. There's a metal box that's almost a cube shape that is mounted to the joist above the ceiling and a plastic tube coming out that needs to be attached to the exhaust pipe out of the house and taped up.

Here's a picture of a similar one:

Even if this wasn't an new construction unit, I would have had to go up to put the new fan in because Uncle Bob didn't leave any slack on the flex conduit or the flex exhaust pipe, so there would have been no way to attach them first before screwing the box into the joist.

Apparently, they're called "blank face" GFCI.

Unless the price of GFCI outlets have gone up, these are all stupid expensive at around $20 each. When I bought the regular GFCI outlets last year they were around $15, and I was able to buy a 4 pack for only $30. What a ripoff. I mean, it wouldn't make any sense to put plugs above the toilet literally right next to the tile to the shower, but wow.

That applies to lights overhead in the shower? I guess that makes sense. Every house I ever was in didn't have one, but it's not a bad idea and I'm sure they do it on all new construction.

Well I grew up in Crook County, IL. I've never seen a place that takes code more seriously than they do, and any time I've ever done any work I always do it up to their standard even if the code in another area is lax.

In CC, it's illegal to use Romex anywhere inside of your house. You can use it in your garage, but only if the garage is detached from the house and a certain amount of feet from it.

It's probably safe over the long haul as long as you're not putting too much of a load on it and it was wired up right. But the problem with Romex is that it IS by far the easiest way to do things and that means that any dummy with a few tools and brain cells can get a light or outlet working without having to bend conduit or even use flex conduit and make the attachements.

The problem is that by nature it's not grounded to the earth ground like your hard pipe or flex conduit would be just by making the connections to the existing wiring. I'm sure you know, but that third bare wire in there is earth ground, and you don't even want to know the scary stuff I've seen under the drywall.

The worst thing I'd ever seen done by Uncle Bob wasn't even using Romex. He added a plug outlet close to the ground in the bathroom by tying it in to the outlet that was on the other side in the bedroom by popping out a slug in the back of each of the outlets. Rather than do the more difficult and correct thing to tie them together and cut a small piece of conduit with connectors, he used a rubber tube that I think was a cut length of garden hose to pull the wire through. So an outlet 12" from the floor in a bathroom just feet away from the walk in shower had no earth ground.

:(

Short of putting in hard pipe that can easily have new wire run through it if need be at a later date, the correct thing to do in this case would have just been to drill a bigger hole in the top plate where the Romex was fed through so they could drop some flexible conduit down there and run all the wires through to maintain a legitimate earth ground without making use of the janky extra ground wire in the Romex.

At least yours was hidden! To be fair to my friend, not only doesn't he know a thing about electric, but I was in that bathroom about 10 minutes before I went upstairs and I didn't even notice the thing staring me right in the face above the toilet, but it really was in a place where you would never expect to see anything electrical, so my eyes must have just glossed over it 20 or so times. I can't believe it took me going back up into the attic and following the Romext trail to realize that there was something down there.

Yeah. Sometimes it's crazy how life works out.

This is a guy I knew since First Grade. I never even hung out with him outside of school until Jr High, and then when I moved out of town I didn't see him until some of my old friends that I still hung out with were hanging out with him and it turned out that my first apartment was just one building down from his.

We hung out a lot for a few years then and we were both always throwing parties and trying to one-up each other. But he had lost his job at one point and had a ton of free time, and he started spending it with my girlfriend while I was at work. Looking back, I don't think she was lying to me when she said that it was platonic (at least for her), but I was the jealous type and ended up driving her into his arms. I went over to his place and we got in a huge fist fight, he ended up knocking her up after that and they didn't stay together long. But the funny thing is that to this day they've always remained friends and did a pretty awesome job raising his son for a mom and dad that shared custody (compared to my parents).

Until recently, I think I only saw him and met his wife one time after that. It was shortly after they had gotten married and it was at one of my other friend's weddings.

But then when I went to another friend's 40th birthday back in late 2019 and saw a lot of people I hadn't seen in ages, he came right up to me and apologized for all of that and asked me if I hated him. I said "nah man. We're good." And it turned out that he had moved out here in Indiana and was only about 6 miles from me. I probably hang out with him more than any of my other friends these days. The dude's loaded so whenever we go out and play pool or whatever he's always paying, and I love Free.

Yeah. No problem. None of this is rocket science. If you're able bodied and have a few decent tools at your disposal, a lot of things can be done just from watching a youtube video if you don't know somebody who knows what they're doing.

But my motto is always expect the worst and you'll never be disappointed.

This job wasn't the worst case scenario, although it was far from ideal.

Quote:

I wasn't dressed for the occasion. I kept my long jeans on since it all washes off and it wouldn't make me itchy, but he only had a short sleeved junk shirt for me, and I wasn't going to wear my fleece hoodie up there and get the fiberglass entangled in it. So I had itchy arms when it was done. I've never gotten rashes from fiberglass myself, so it was just a little discomfort until I got home.

He had a mask for me and I started using it, but it's just too hot working with a mask on so most of the work was done maskless. Anybody who has ever said in the last two years that wearing a mask while working is no big deal has never worked a day in their life and sits at a desk in an air conditioned office.

Wow! lol. That's a new one to me.

Quote:

I guess Uncle Bob did both our houses!

Uncle Bob did EVERYBODY's houses.

That problem I mentioned with the non-grounded outlet wasn't in my house. I have other problems though. Even though I've bended hardpipe through the basement after gutting it and got all of that romex out of the house, I have no idea what can of worms is sealed up under the rest of the house.

The switch under the sink for the dishwasher had wire whips so short that you couldn't even pull out the switch more than an inch to take the wires off. I added 4" whips to the ends of those with caps before putting a new switch in there. Now it's a little tight because of that, but since no other wiring will ever go in there it's good.

Another problem is that 90% of the outlets and switches that I've exposed over the years weren't wrapped with tape after they were wired up. Also, in the living room there were at least 3 loose outlets that would pull out of the wall if you didn't hold them while pulling a plug out. I fix those as I go.

The biggest problem that I've found though is that the wiring map for my breaker box is a nightmare. I have one or two breakers that control electric in the basement, the first floor, the 2nd floor and the attic. I've got one hub in the ceiling on the 2nd floor with so many wires it it that I'd imagine it could cause breakers to trip a lot if a full family was living here and everyone was watching TV's in different rooms while the A/C was on, and I don't think there would be any way to fix this issue without doing an extreme gutting of the house at this point.

It's never been a problem for me, but I'm just one dude living in a big house. Fortunately, the new light bulb tech is very low wattage which will help out a lot. And if I ever get central air installed or the new owners do, and that's on its own dedicated breaker, it will probably never be a real issue for anyone.

He was always a lot more into sports than I was but we played a ton of pool when we were young and even though I didn't keep up with it I'm still pretty good, so if somebody else is paying for it with the prices these days I don't mind. He's kind of getting me into the UFC fights too. He and I used to do some boxing back in the day but never took it very serious. I guess he made an attempt at one point and he's got some posters in his man cave of events that he was in.

So not only do we have the overlap, but we've got that camaraderie that only comes when you've beaten the shit out of each other.

It's unexplainable to anybody who hasn't gone through it. But if you can get past leaving each other a bloody mess 20 years after the fact, I can't imagine too many things that could come between you.

And his wife is a great woman and she loves me with the work I've helped out with around there, so I think it's pretty safe to say that this is one of my post-drinking success stories.

I'm assuming everybody else is showing 197 pages in this thread.

Incorrect. What you described does happen when editing the 50th post on a page, but that does not add to the list count. Or the page count - otherwise there would be a dozen extra pages just from me alone.
There are several pages of this thread with more than 50 posts.

Post-surgery is ... interesting. Many limitations: No dishwashing, vacuuming, hairbrushing I (like I have any!), dusting, food prep etc and no lifting. That doesn't leave much!

Special tight bra, drain tubes and catch bottles are a marvel of engineering, but rub.

Gotta say that waking up from surgery was difficult. I felt so relaxed, comfortable, and at ease I could have slept for another couple of hours, but I thought the recovery nurses might want me out of their hair and in a regular ward. They got that anesthesia thing down to a science! I can understand why ppl get addicted to painkillers.

I've been busy here, but mostly recently just running after a slew of issues that came up one after another. I was so hoping to make progress on my various projects. But ... not yet.

However, one of the things I made progress on is I've been looking at gas-powered chipper/ shredders for all the tree and bush trimming and removal I'm going to do soon. So I was looking at the heavy-duty types and O. M. G. They are EXPENSIVE. The cheapest runs about $550. And despite that I'd even consider buying one because it costs about $400 per day to rent one. But literally none of the ones I looked at had a rating higher than middling. And the faults were serious ones, like cracked body welds, bolt heads that sheared off during use, chunks of hammer-mill blades that got spat out of the machine at high speed like bullets, exhaust that ran so hot it set the wood on fire ... and so on. Really awful unsafe problems. Sigh. How hard could it be to design and build and sell something that works even averagely, without all the hazards?

So I talked it over with a family member, who said basically - the biggest volume reduction comes from doing the smaller twigs and branches that carry a lot of leaves and needles. The large branches (more than an inch or 2 in diameter) you can quickly and easily just cut up into pieces and use as firewood, or put in green waste.

So ... Forget those expensive pieces of junk! that really had me bollixed.

I'm going with electric chipper/ shredders than come in well under $200 and will do the most volume reduction.

It feels good to have come to what I think is a good decision, and out that step behind me.

Kinda curious how, when Kiki has extended absences, it is always at the same times when SignyM is missing, disabled, bedridden due to illness.
