Gotta make the most of the summer. Been bitching about the heat, but before you know it I'll be bitching about the cold.

Plumbers will be in the building tomorrow working on the main pipes. So, no flushing or running water from 10am to 2pm. I'll make sure to fill my kettle tonight for the morning.

I think I'll relax today.

I won't be able to backfill the front until tomorrow, so instead of getting dirty twice just to do the side of the house today, I'll just do it all tomorrow. This *should* be the quick and easy part. I'm hoping the wire fencing to prevent mole tunnels along the foundation are as easy to make as I think they'll be.

I don't want to expose any more of the foundation until that's done, and I won't be doing any work on the shed slab until I can expose the side of it.

It's not really the season, considering that I have to crank up the oven to 350-400 for an hour, but I made roast onions, potato, and zucchini yesterday. (The zucchini is doing well again this year.) So tasty, for just a simple prep! It was so good I think I'm going to do the same thing again tomorrow, only I'll throw a chicken in the oven too.

C'mon over for dinner! I'll make a salad with fresh garden tomatoes too!

Thank you, Sigs.

I had a great day!

I didn't relax, and boy I'm glad I didn't. Backfilling is NOT a quick and easy job when I'm measuring and cutting all of those metal cloth pieces and putting them perpendicular to the foundation to keep the moles from making any tunnels there.

It's REALLY not quick when I'm also using the gardening tools to grade all of the existing dirt away from the house in prep for the rocks.

And it certainly isn't quick when I managed to put down some fabric and 17 fifty pound bags of the river rock so I can see what it's going to look like.

I wish I didn't have to backfill the front tomorrow, but I'll finish doing that and then get back to doing as much of the rocks on the side that I can get done. I'm so glad I decided to start on that because this is going to be transformative.

SUPER MOTIVATED NOW!

And unlike today, I won't be miserable in the sun the first half of the day doing the backfill, and hopefully by the time I get back to putting rocks down on the side the sun is hiding behind the tall trees across the street.

Back to the trenches.

The blister on my palm from all that tar painting is not very fun. And apparently while I was opening up the packaging on my outlet tester I decided that the other palm needed in on the fun and sliced it pretty good.

But the good news is, all of my garage electric is good. Well... that or the tester isn't good. Hmmmmm... I suppose I'm going to have to get around to intentionally wiring up an outlet incorrectly to see if my tester is working.

I've got two, maybe 2 1/2 days to backfill the front before the rain comes down. It won't take me all day to do that, so maybe I'll get some of it done and go back to putting down fabric and rocks after more grading. I'd really rather be doing that today, but I don't want to let time get away from me and not have the front backfill done before the rain comes in this weekend.

Well... yes and no.

Even though I believe we're in for a good deal of rain on Saturday and Sunday, we had a light spring rain season and the sun and heat have done a good job keeping things fairly dry around here this year. My sump pump probably hasn't gone off since spring (if it has, I've never been around to hear it... and I find myself just checking that there isn't any flooding when we do get rain).

I don't think I'd have a river up against my house this weekend unless we got about 12" or some crazy amount. But 3 years ago when we had some crazy amount like 75" of rainfall that water would fill the trenches up to the brim. Even last year I noticed that when it only rained few inches when the fence was being replaced behind me that the post holes were full of water to the top.

But I finished the mole tunnel nets and backfill in front today.

I'm going to run out and buy some topsoil tonight for grading tomorrow. I shouldn't need any on the side that I started putting rocks down, but I know for sure that I'll need it on the other side. Even with the gutters up if there's a heavy rain water will sit against the shed slab on the side and wrap around the front of the house about halfway through the porch blocks. I'm never going to keep water from pooling in the hasta beds because the stone barrier for them is almost as high as the bottom of the siding, but I'm going to at least get the water to pool at the bottom of that stone and as far away from the foundation as I can. Hopefully the rocks will help with the drainage.

My goal is to have the rocks down on the side and around the front to the walkway tomorrow. If I only use 1/3 of the rocks for that, I shouldn't have any problem covering everything I wanted to cover this year. Then I'll have to buy another 10,000 lbs of rocks for next year.

It was. . My first hand, I went out and got over 1,000points. Then it sort of skidded around for a while then I got another hand with over 1,000points. Then more skidding. I almost had winds and dragons in another hand but I couldn't get rid of 2 character tiles. So, that hand wasn't great. The last hand was just pure luck. Didn't have my own flower or my own wind. But I had the wind of the round which was West and the green and white dragons. So, I got 3 doubles for the basic winds and dragons then another 3 doubles for the wind of the round and the 2 dragons in my hand. 6 doubles and another over 1,000point hand.

Just make sure all your food is sealed up in sturdy containers. You probably won't see mice per se, but keep an eye out for droppings next to baseboards, backs of drawers and cabinets in your kitchen, and backs of closets.

We had a field mouse in our house once, so I bought a fieldmouse-sized live trap and caught it. Cute little thing. I released it in a nearby field.

But they chew power cords and can spread hanta virus (altho never heard of hanta virus near Vancouver) so best that they're not in the house.

I am very careful. I don't leave food out when it is open. I haven't seen anything but keeping a close watch.

A mouse got into the apartment where I was living when I was looking after my mom and it finally ate the poison but I still had to kill it. Just to put it out of its misery.

So I did another bean and corn salad with onions, garden red peppers, garden tomatoes, garden parsley, a fresh grinding of pepper, a bit of leftover roast chicken (altho the rest is for chicken-bean-cheese enchiladas later) and a vinaigrette. Got 'er done.

I was not on pace to beat the sun, but I went the last two hours without any breaks, hauling 55 bags of rock from the back of my house, all around to the front of the house and putting them down while also cutting the weed fabric.

Most of my day was spent meticulously cleaning the dirt site and then meticulously grading everything on a slope away from the house. Putting the rock down is easy. Just a lot more physical than everything else.

I'm freakin' beat.

Almost half my rock pile is gone now. I think I'm going to need more rock.

It's going to look so good after a few rains. the area where the A/C drips cleaned off the rocks and they are beautiful. So colorful. I really had no idea when they all look so brown and dirty out of the bag.

I wish I could show it to you two. Maybe when the rocks are clean I can get a shot under the siding with some of the rock and a hoasta and you can just imagine what it looks like.

Oh yeah. The I is right next to the U. I haven't even given any thought to the placement of keys for decades since I learned how to type. Back in the late 90's when I went to an office staffing temp agency that a few of the lady friends I had used the women there all couldn't believe that a guy could type 55 WPM with a .5% error rate. I've since added all the numbers and symbols above them and gotten quite a bit faster over the years just from writing all the time.

But I've seen you quote me as SUX back when we weren't agreeing on something too. You sure you're not mad at me about something still?

My old man was right. We got a ton of rain last night. Earlier this week I thought I'd have at least half a day before it started raining today, but after his warning I knew I needed to kick it into high gear and get it done.

Hopefully there isn't too much of a mess over on the other side that doesn't have any rocks yet. The tar should be dry though, so it should just be a matter of rinsing it down. I'm not worried about any dirt displacement either since I only needed to use 1 bag of topsoil on the 1st side, and the other 17 bags are for the other side that needed them. I'll probably go through them all, but if I don't I have some spots around the yard where I can use them.

I wonder if the rain really washed the rocks off? They look freakin' awesome right now while they're all wet. But yesterday I did spray a section of them with a hose and thought I'd washed them off but after they dried they were only slightly less dirty than the ones I hadn't sprayed.

Well... the irony for me is that my Typing class DID bring my grade down. The teacher we had was real nice and cool and a group of about 5 of us probably got away with more in her class than we should have. She was gone one day and we had one of our 5 typing tests which was our only markers for our grade for the semester. It was also the final one, which was worth more than any of the others. The rest of us decided somwhere along the way that it would be a good idea to just copy Gary's work and turn it in so we could clown around while the substitute teacher was there.

Great plan, until we all got the same 5 mistakes on the paper.

I could tell that it broke her heart to do it, but we all got a Zero on that test, including Gary. Gary and I were the only ones of the five that still passed the class... With a "D". The other three had to finish it in summer school.

Despite that fact, I still tell people that the only thing I learned in 12 years of public education that made me any money in life was that one semester keyboarding class. She really was a great teacher.

Got a new toy for my auto shop. 50% off an impact wrench that works with all of my existing batteries. Between that and my tire inflator I might have to get a bag with a good seal and keep them all in my trunk with a charged battery in case I ever get stuck with a problem on the road.

It will sure be nice using the impact wrench to change my tires and brakes in the future instead of using hand tools.

Now I just need to get a good jack instead of the crappy scissor jack that comes with the car.

Oh, nice!

Have fun with your new toy!

I have one of those "starter batteries", just in case.

Those are great to have. I had one of those that got quite a bit of use on one of my older cars. It had all the bells and whistles too.

But then I decided one day that it would be a good idea to use it to power a saw to cut out a stump that was too far for any of my extension cords.

Instant sparks, smoke and regret.

I don't think the battery would have been any good on it anymore though anyways. That was 10 years ago or more by now, and it was already 5 years old when I did it.

I've got a trickle charger in my car and a beast of a charger in the garage, but they wouldn't do me any good on the road. I always have my jumper cables in my trunk. I don't really drive all that much, and I never drive anywhere remotely where there isn't anybody else. I can be pretty persuasive when I need to be.

But yeah. That's been on the list of things to get. I just haven't been able to bring myself to buy one because of the price tag. The one I had was awesome, and even had a light and a AM/FM radio. It was $80 back in the mid-aughts. Can't get anything close to that for $80 these days, and usually it's not even by a brand name I've ever heard of.

Went to see Hamilton on the weekend. Loved the music and learnt a bit about US history.

Possibly true - it’s an interpretation. But it did make me do a bit of googling about the War of Independence.

Yeah. If you look at history books here in the US, and I'm referring to the ones that are taught to kids in public schools, just about every 5 years you'll find the text to be unrecognizable to the books that came 5 years before it.

I believe what people claim is American History just about as much as I believe that The Bible is a record of events from over 2000 years ago. (Which to note, any version of The Bible that has been translated so that I could read it is itself an interpretation of the original work)

Maybe that's where the religious types got it wrong though. Aside from the changes that were made when it was translated, the book doesn't change.

People seem to trust sites like Wikipedia and Snopes though, even though they both are run by people with an obvious bias and the information presented is extremely fluid and easy to change when doing so is convenient.

Wiki is a reasonable place to start though - especially if you want a bit of basic information- which I didn’t have before. Not sure I’m interested enough to read the biography of Hamilton which is supposedly quite good.

In the end much of history is about the lens in which you look through - the basic facts don’t change but the view of them do- always been that way.

If you couldn't reach ANY internet website, it was probably a problem with your internet service provider. We're on cable, and there was a time when our inet went out for a few hours, and while walking the dog I saw our electricity provider replacing some poles while running a (big!) generator to run the telecom and internet services because, of course, they run on electricity too. Or could be a server (DNS) problem with your ISP, especially if you got "file not found"-type error messages wherever you tried to go.

Another problem that can cause global errors is a problem with the modem and router. I don't know how you get inet access ... if you have your own modem and router and pay your own bill, or if your apartment come with jacks in the wall, or wifi provided by the apartment bldg ... but SOMEONE has a modem and router through which you reach the inet, and occasionally it gets confused and needs to be rebooted, or firmware patches need to be downloaded from your ISP.

If it was just this site ... well, this is probably a medium-sized database at this point, and every now and again it needs repacking or backing up or other maintenance.

But if your PC was misbehaving with other software ... say, you tried to save file and it garbled the contents ... then it might have been your PC. SIX would prolly be able to explain troubleshooting better than I can.

I find Wiki USUALLY to be a reliable source of technical info.* I used to refer to it all the time when I needed basic technial info like "How do blowout preventers work?" or "what is texanol?" but anything political or historical ... Hoo boy! It doesn't get basic facts wrong ... names, dates, etc ... but it could highly selective about WHICH facts were put in, and it would leave a crap-ton out. If I was following a specific topic I could see the content change from month to month, or even from day to day, depending on how politically active the topic was and what narrative was being pushed that month/week/day.

One of the original founders of wikipedia - Larry Sangers- has disavowed it, even as Jimmy Wales continues hawking for donations.

That is the problem with the inet's historical info: it's too fluid. Our agency was not above changing the language (on the sly) of a negotiated contract just before signing ... fortunately, one of our negotiators was a stubborn cuss who insisted on reading the whole thing word for word before signing... and the intranet version was just as fluid, so it paid to have a signed hardcopy document on-hand that couldn't be changed on a whim bc I found discrepancies between the intranet and hardcopy versions.

* Altho we did just find a technical error just yesterday. We were watching a TV show and the phrase "drift mine" came up, and the wiki definition was at odds with every other definition and every image that duckduck came up with. Clearly, wiki got it wrong on that one.

It wasn't Brenda. It was the site.

I'd thought it kind of strange how little post activity happened last night, until the site hung up on me at one point and I gave up. Later I went back to try to post somewhere and the thread would come up, but when I tried to make a post one of those database errors came up.

This morning it was good though.

Well, today was another somewhat productive day. Aside from the usual dog-walking and KP duties, I gave the dog a bath and hubby helped me trim her nails (she needs to be mummy-wrapped for the nail-clipping part). She hides when she hears me run water in the laundrey tub. Today I had to drag her out from under the kitchen table, and she gives me a look that would melt a heart of stone. Sorry pup ... you itch, your fur is dirty, and you need a bath and nail trim!

And then I cut hubby's hair and trimmed his beard and 'stache. He's quite a handsome guy!

Would you believe I've been "brushing" the dog's teeth most evenings for over a month? I found that a small piece of gauze wrappped around my finger with doggy-toothpaste embedded in it works well and isn't too large for her small mouth. Ever since she has her teeth cleaned and had 7 (!!) teeth extracted I've been trying to keep up with her dental hygiene ... who knew dogs had such needs?? She gives me that pleading look, and the tip of her tail vibrates with the same beseech ... "Please can you NOT brush my teeth???" ... but I think the toothpaste actually tastes pretty good to her and she's getting used to it. Altho I have to dig around in her mouth a bit to find the back molars.
