Huh.... well...

I didn't trap anything today. I thought for sure I'd get a repeat of last night and be down one more trap and still clueless if I took care of my problem or not (one of them, anyhow).

It remains untouched with the bait intact.

I think I might have actually got the mole with it last night. There are a good deal of field mice around these parts, so the likelihood that one just accidentally stumbled upon it last night over the chances that the mole just came out of the hole directly next to it and got trapped is probably way less than a coin toss if the smell of the peanut butter out all night didn't attract another mouse.

I'm going to put the trap in front of the house now. There doesn't seem to be nearly as large of a tunnel system there, but there is an entry hole. These things are highly territorial though, so because of the proximity I'm inclined to believe it's the same mole, as well as part of a connected network of tunnels that I just have yet to discover how they are connected.

I'm also going to set up one by the garage which is far enough away that I think its rather extensive tunnel network is a separate instance.

Back to work on Saturday. So, that's something. Ended up calling my boss as this thing was giving me problems last night. Good thing as she is busy again but being a doc and with flu season coming on.

Good to hear about your husband, Sigs. I missed that you posted about him. He's going to be fine then, right?

More work on the mole issue today. Zero new activity in areas that I've worked on over the last 3 days, but I'm always finding more tunnels and collapsing them and creating roadblocks.

The work got sidetracked again when I realized that since I'm already there I should probably take care of those maple tree stumps. All 4 of them by the house are now taken care of. Without digging 3 to 4 feet I couldn't get everything, but they're all cut at least 18 to 20 inches below the surface now. A large part of them were dead and brittle, but they were still alive and quite hard to cut through with a pruning blade on the sawzall. Now without any exposure at all to the sun and many very large roots cut away they should die on their own over time.

Only one left by the driveway which pulled up the chain link fence that I already removed. I might do that tomorrow as a break from the mole tunnel work, but I'd be going out of my way to do it since that's nowhere near where I left off on that work. Maybe I'll get lucky and the front of the house is not very bad and I'd get to that stump tomorrow without side tracking anyhow.

Trick is to keep up with it now.

I used to let my junk mail pile up for a month or two before doing anything about it. But now that everything has a place I take care of it the second that I take the mail in and that's one huge pile not cluttering up my entryway into the house.

That is true enough. I don't bring any junk mail in with me like flyers as there is a garbage can for those things around the mail box. When its full it goes into the recycling bins at least I hope so. So all I am bringing up is bills and any letters I may get.

Yeah. I still rip the name and address off of everything before it goes in the bin. Fliers are easy. Cable and insurance offers require opening the mail first. Credit card offers get the extra documentation recycled and then the whole offer goes in the burn bin since they put your name all over those things and it's not even worth the time to rip it off everywhere only to worry that you're missing one.

I really should see if I can get on the no mail list again. Probably just save myself 90% of the hassle that way. It's going on my to-do list now.

I sometimes bring up credit card offers to shred or if I am lazy leave them down there in the bin.

Got a bunch of old bills for shredding and bank statements as well. Old birthday and Christmas cards usually just go into the recycling unless I rip them up a bit.

I don't need flyers so leaving them down there is the easiest. Waste of paper in my mind.

Worked today, but feel like nothing got done since it was some bullshit that came up out of the blue and almost sidetracked my commissioned work next week. Luckily everything is still going more or less according to plan and the job is now costing me $30.00 less than originally thought. Warm days are worth more than $30.00 though right now unfortunately since we've only got a few of them left before the bottom falls out.

All is well. I see we have ANOTHER heat wave coming up starting Monday and lasting (so far as the forecast goes) thru Friday, so I'm just trying to catch up with as much yardwork as possible before I have to switch to "indoor" work. Anyway, I'll be sure to let you know how that goes.

Seeing as I have a REALLY hard time visualizing things, I'm going to mark the pathways with corn gluten and/or gypsum (both of which I have) tomorrow, I think. That's pretty light work and it will give me a rest.

Fall is such a busy time for yardwork! I wish the weather was more cooperative!

I did get a few pieces of good news, tho ... the metal recycling center is still open, so I can take in all of the accumulated metal pieces - including the pipe pieces. And I finally got the draft legal documents for review, which I intend to do lickety-split. I ope to turn that around this weekend. Plus, hubby's retirement board has acknowledged the tax information that I sent them, so I hope we'll get a nice fat remibursement check to pay for the taxes that their mistake cost us. In any case, the ball is in their court.

I have to get the battery replaced on one of our vehicles ... it died an unnatural death during one of the last heat waves. And the A/C needs recharging.

Also tried a new recipe out of the cookbook: skillet chicken fajitas with rajas (roasted poblano chiles cut into strips) con crema. Hubby loved the whole thing. DD liked the chicken part OK. I thought it was a little sour overall because I didn't get as much smokey flavor into the dish as the recipe intended (store was all out of smoked paprika, plus I'm a little wary of taking oil to the point of "just beginning to smoke") plus I had to eliminate the charred onions due to dd's food sensitivities. So I added a teaspoon of sugar to make up for the lack of onion, but I think overall I would not add the lime juice to the rajas.

Also had dd help me with zucchini parmagiana with ground turkey. When she said "It's always worth making" a few weeks ago, I countered with "It's always worth eating, but not always worth making" because this is one of those PITA recipes that takes, like, forever. So THIS time she had to peel, slice, wilt, egg dip, dredge, and pan-fray the zucchini, so now she knows what a time-suck it is!

Sigh. Always something!

It was supposed to be 86 today. Probably our last truly warm day.

I had my doubts last night when that cold air was howling through the open windows though. 10AM almost right now and it's only 60. The high is still supposed to be 80, so maybe that's going to happen when the clouds go away. Totally looks like rain.

Strange since none of this was in the forecast.

Dude wants to do the gutters on Monday after putting the final touches on his current job. I doubt that's going to work out though with a 75% chance of rain.

Should be up by Tuesday though.

Back to working on the moles today, and I'm going to remove that final maple stump.

Got all the maple stumps out. I found the one that I knew was there but wasn't able to locate the other day.

Got all the mole tunnels taken care of on the front of the house too, so the guys doing the gutters shouldn't have any problems now with ladders sinking in the ground like I did earlier this year when I was working around there.

Looks like it was just in time too because the rain we were originally not getting until Tuesday creeped back to Monday and is now going to be happening tomorrow instead. Sucks for my neighbors who were having a B-Day party for their kid tomorrow, since they're probably going to have to move it indoors on the last really warm day of the year around here.

Got a bunch of concrete sealant tubes today. I'll be working on the foundation and the garage slab while the guys are here and giving them a hand with whatever I can help with to make sure they're out of here in one day.

Just starting a (predicted) 5-day heatwave, with temps above 90 and (on some days) above 100. I hope this one goes away as planned and doesn't drag out for another five days, like the last one.

So I'm doing "indoor" work for the while, as planned, Got a bit hung up trying to resolve a medication issue for hubby, one of his absolutely important meds was denied coverage (Do you get prescription coverage in Cananda, BRENDA? If so, thank your lucky stars!) So here's hoping he wins he appeal for coverage; it's between the doctor and insurance company now.

Aside from that, I have to review our legal papers for the estate (they were redrafted at my request to add/remove provisions) and have sent them off to our successor trustee for his review too. Plus need to review other documents as well.

But I keep looking outside and sighing. There's SO MUCH to do out there! I did try working in the heat but all I did was exhaust myself!

My prescriptions are covered. I know I am. My seizure med in spite of its age is still over $100Canadian for a month.

I hope he can get it covered. I know prescription meds are a difficult thing to keep on top of down there.

We on the Lower Mainland which means my city and the surrounding area has another smoke warning for Wednesday and Thursday. Heard on Seattle news of two big fires burning one near Redding in the North and the other is Napa Valley and Sonoma County.

I'm lucky. I'm doing yard cleanup, and I have only 2 XL bins I can use for yard waste (1 is green waste, the other 1 is trash). So each week all I need to do is 2 bins'-worth of yard cleanup and I can call it done!

I was dithering and could have done it sooner, but anyway I got out early today before it got super-hot and it took a bit over an hour to get 2 bins'-worth. And I'm done for the week!

FWIW I've been having a horrible time w/ my isp for the last few weeks - minute by minute it drops its connection to my modem, and I have to reboot my modem - multiple times a day.

I tried your example, and even thoI got out at about 9:15 and quit around 10:15, it was still effing HOT!

But FWIW last week we got out three bins of yardwaste from weeding, pruning, and clearing out half of the veggie garden, and one bin of palm fronds.

This week I have another two bins of palm fronds (handled as trash ... greenwaste won't take them) plus probably another bin or two of prunings and veggie garden clearing.

But the big effort is digging up and trying to preserve some of my plants .... my plan is to "erase" parts of the yard so I can scorch and spray the weeds once and for all, fill in the low spots with topsoil, replant the plants I (hopefully) saved ... each one in a root barrier, and mulch with chipped bark. Plus plant some more plants. My planting plan includes coffeeberry, Wayne Roderick erigeron (beach aster), Mattole CA fuschia (groundcover), CA goldenrod, salvia gregii (not native, but grows well) and geraniums (the round-leafed, "zonal" kind, not ivy-leafed) plus the purple three-awn grass which is doing so spectacularly well I'm going to have to root-barrier that too, just to keep it in check, even tho it's not in an area that needs digging...

The nice thing about having the plants in buckets is that I get to move them around until I find an arrangement that looks good.

Oh that sounds so enjoyable - I feel like I can just experience what it was like to be there.

It was as I don't know how many more times I'll be able to do that this year. I could smell a lot of ocean water too. Fraser runs into the Pacific, so there was a fair bit of sea water mixed with it. Course there was also a lot of silt in it but that is normal for the Fraser.

It is nice. Not really but I don't always feel like taking a bus down to get to the boardwalk. And once we really hit fall walking along the boardwalk isn't so nice with all the rain and the wind off the river.

Signy, I wanted to add that I think my physical work is much lighter than yours. It consists of raking stuff off of the soil with a garden rake, gathering it, and dumping it. That's it. I do no spading and turning dirt, for example. And for NEXT week my load will be even lighter! The neighbor's tree has many many small branches hanging down on top of and over the fence. (A Japanese honeysuckle vine they had along that same fence had already pulled it down twice before they removed that vine - and this year the fence is already halfway down in spots since they did hillbilly repairs by propping it up with sticks after the last time their vine took it down.) Now that the tree branches look like they're taking it down yet again, I'll be standing there in one place with my pruners and saw, and snip snip snip saw saw saw dump dump dump. I imagine it to be an easy job!

How warm is your place? Laptops have infamously poor cooling. If it's hot enough it can start acting weird.
