Nah...

Now, the clean out cover IS cracked and has been for many, many years (Maybe even since I bought the house?). I just loosely tie it on top with a small length of thin backer rod and that keeps it on until I want to take it off and look.

But the water winds its way UP the PVC pipe, where it then falls DOWN into the iron pipe going out the side of the house. By the time it hits the clean out it's already just flowing. Flowing fast, yes, but I don't have Old Faithful right in front of my house.

If I were to have any cracks because of pressure, they'd be inside my crawl space. And unless the iron was just completely disintegrating, the point of failure would most likely be one of the PVC joints. I've never even had a leak inside the pipes in the crawl.

That's not to say that there aren't cracked pipes out there beyond the clean out. In fact, I know there are since I had to have the pipe rodded that one time and we pulled out roots (probably from the tree that was planted right OVER the pipe).

But that's easily 50 feet from the front of my house.


When I had that cracked pipe next to my foundation it would erode the dirt away and eventually leave me with a gaping hole along the side of the house that was so big I thought a large animal had made it when I first saw it.

Ever since I fixed that length of pipe, I haven't noticed even the slightest drop in elevation anywhere around the pipe, and I know exactly where the entire pipe is after the various crews came around and mapped everything out for me with spray paint before the tree stumps could be ground up.

I might be getting that water-tight test in my basement this year after all...

June going into July is sure a strange time to start the water flowing after having a drought all spring.


We've had just shy of 4" in the last 48 hours, and we're predicted to get nearly 3" more in the next 24. The 5 days after that show anywhere between a 51% and 70% chance of rain, three of those days with thunderstorms.

Not exactly on track to get us back up to the 60" we got last year by this time, but that will be a lot of rain in a short amount of time.


Even at this point though, it's hard to tell how good my new fixes have done (gutters, the three drains running down the driveway, the foundation patch, etc.)

The ground was so dry by now that it probably had plenty of room to accommodate 4" fairly easily. My sump has been going off, but nothing crazy so far.

The Sump Pump TV signal has been going strong since I moved that light from right next to the camera plug and hung it so it's facing directly into the well. I got a video of the water draining into it from the 4" inlet yesterday for around 45 minutes before engaging the pump.

Not exactly Must See TV.

I think your fixes will get a good test. Here's hoping you don't wind up with water, water everywhere.

And at least you won't have to water your lawn!

If this is a large storm system, I would expect to see improvements in the drought monitor, bc that amount of rain really is significant.

We will see...

I was actually wondering where all the water went. I mean, everything has been wet since I woke up, but as far as I could tell there hadn't been a drizzle for hours. I was even able to make two shopping trips without being rained on.

Good timing though because 10 minutes after I got home it REALLY started coming down and continues to do so right now.

No thunder so far, but they have added a tornado watch until later this evening into the mix.

Finger's crossed.


ETA: Got sidetracked and I guess I never posted the above response.

It's been a quite a few hours since I was writing that. We've had the air-raid sirens on all day long with a bunch of tornado warnings that fortunately haven't done anything around me so far.

Pretty insane downpours here and there.

I had to go out with my ladder in the pouring rain and figure out why my back porch gutter wasn't draining. It was full to the brim, end-to-end with water. My nets at the downspouts are a terrible idea. I'll be removing them on the garage as well when it's dry.

Because of that, who knows how much extra water got into the sand pit. It was covered in about an inch of water at one point during the hardest of the downpours.

Sump is going off about every 2 minutes right now.


Good news is that I haven't gotten a drop of water in the basement from the foundation. At this point, with the standing water all over both the front and back yard I'd have to imagine that I would have been mopping right now if it were last year.


I just got done playing block Daddy and cleaning out the sewers again. As much as I'd love to, I just can't bring myself to letting it get so high that some jackass gets their car stuck. A few almost had.

Just found out tonight that as long as I have an internet to connect to, I can monitor my sump pump from anywhere with my tablet.

Shame I didn't know that before today. I wouldn't have missed half of my buddy's kid's graduation party and I could have saved myself a lot of stressing over nothing, sitting at home wondering if my power was going to go out or a tornado was going to hit my house all day long.


Not a drop of water in my basement where it doesn't belong though.

6.38" in the last 72 hours. 2.96" of that in the last 24 hours.




I'm going to turn the fan on and pretend the sump pump isn't a thing tonight. Everything seems to be working. I'll see how far the cycles are tomorrow.

Now that I've decided to keep it, I might have to end up getting a dryer that wasn't hanging from a pipe in the basement for the last 6 years though. Last night before going to the party I had to tie m hair up and only wash from the neck down or I wouldn't have gotten there until after 10PM.

Around here I see ladies carrying umbrellas/ parasols against the sun. But perhaps that's one too many things to carry.

I have a sun hat that my sis bought for me. I find keeping the sun off my face and neck does help me feel overall cooler.

It's extraordinary that you would need something like that in BC!

I saw at least one lady with an umbrella up. But most people are carrying water bottles with them. Some older ladies wearing sun hats.

I hate hats. Never wear them. I find if I wear my hair up and keep it off my neck that keeps my face and neck cool. I'm in shorts and a tank top today.

This heat wave is one of the earliest on record for BC. Usually we don't see temps like these until late July and into August.

The Valley is really taking a beating as it a main agricultural centre for BC. Raspberries are baking on the vine. Lots of crops I think going to be lost this season.

You know that sacral pain that wraps around to the front of my thigh to my knee? The one that 800 mg ibuprofen so miraculously cured?

Well, I must have overdone things that day because the day following pain was back. I've been on a steady diet of 400 mg ibuprofen in the AM and 400 mg ibuprofen plus pregabalin before bed, and I can sleep comfortably and do things by moving carefully, but I CANNOT reach the ground with my right hand, and only carefully with my left. Sure puts a crimp in gardening and everything else.

I've had sacral pain since my early 20's when I injured something there (at the time I injured it it felt like something tore, but it didn't feel too bad. But after a few hours and through the next 10 days or so it was excruciating). Unfortunately, while I've found a few things that help with low back pain, I haven't found anything that helps with sacral pain besides co-Tylenol (acute injury) and gabapentin (chronic pain).

But I'm still working on it! If I find anything - any stretches or the like - I'll let you know!

Got the main bottom cabinets trimmed out today. Still have one more on the other side of the stove to do.

I've been using my anti-microbial grout marker over the stain on the door that still wouldn't go away over the last week or so. Looks like it finally isn't bleeding through anymore. We'll have to see what it looks like after another coat of paint now. Finger's crossed.

Thanks for the info! That could be the nerve; it shoots pain down my leg when I press the inside of my groin against the edge of a chair, or sneeze, or some such.

Have you ever had an MRI of that part of your spine/ medical evaluation done?

No, not yet. My whole spine is a mess, I think.

One thing I learned though is that if one gets injured, one needs to get it treated. There are meds to reduce inflammation, and physical therapies to prevent tissue scarring, and to strengthen what needs to be strengthened, and flex what needs to be kept flexible. Hoping it'll go away permanently on its own isn't the answer, a lesson I've learned a few times over, and mostly with my spine. (In my defense for not getting things looked at, at the time I had no medical insurance.)

Well... a lot has been done since late last May when I was up that morning until 6:30AM mopping. The only fix that had been done before that was the cracked drain pipe.

Since then, I got the gutters installed. I put the Watertite sealant on the two above-ground foundation cracks and about 16" below grade after cleaning them out with a grinder and drill bits. I dug that sump well about 9" deeper so the water never sits in or above the 4" inlet from the french drain. I added those 4" corrugated drain pipes to the downspouts on both sides of the garage and on the back porch to try to keep as much water as possible out of the Bermuda Triangle.

Honestly, as much as I'm sure all of those other things add up, I think having the 45' gutter on the back of the house is probably the biggest reason. That's the side of the roof that I can stand on and by far has the greatest surface area. All of that water is now being diverted about 7 feet away instead of falling right against the house, right where the crack was letting it all into the basement.





There's still more to do. I've got to either get the guy who hung my gutters to come back out and fix them like he said he would last year or do it myself. One of the front ones isn't graded properly, and they did a crap job of sealing the miters and endcaps around the overhang. (I actually just took a video of what happens when one didn't properly seal an endcap on a gutter that isn't graded toward the downspout since it's pouring rain again).

I've also got to trench out the foundation so I can clean it and put that tar on it. Once that's done, I'm going to do a better job grading the ground from the foundation, which is probably going to require me forking over some cash for some more dirt being dumped out in the street. And while I have it trenched out, I'm going to put sections of chicken wire perpendicular to the foundation to keep the moles from making their main tunnels along side of the house. It's nice to know that I finally found a way to kill them, but there will always be more where they came from.



But yeah... Gotta say it feels pretty good not worrying about having to go down and mop the floor every time it rains now.

Oh, hey Signy, one more thing. Thus is interesting to me, but it might be ultimately useful to you.

The only tissue in the body that heals by making more of itself is bone. Everything else - skin, muscle, tendons, and ligaments - (except for the CNS which has its own limitations) - is held together by some level of scar tissue. The problems that I heard of with scar tissue are 1) that it can fuse different tissues together, for example it can lock 2 different muscles together that should be sliding over each other, and 2 ) after about a year it starts contracting, which can do things like trap and squeeze nerves. So PT is used to keep muscles from getting fused together to maintain full range of motion; and to keep scar tissue from contracting and getting short, hard, and inflexible.

Anyway, I just thought I'd mention it. If you have a soft-tissue injury, it might be helpful to get it looked at and get some PT for it.

The heat is really derailing fruit crops up here. All cherries I have seen in stores are from Washington State, Chelan to be specific and California. No Rainier cherries though.

No grapes from the Okanogan. They are being imported from Mexico this year.

I think the grout stain marker FINALLY did the trick.

With how many coats it took to finally get that stain to not bleed through, I don't know how much better than paint it actually was, but at least I didn't have to paint that damn door 7 extra times.

Hopefully one more paint coat to finish off the door is all it needs and I'm done with all of them.

Eventually I'll finish trimming out the stove cabinet and cleaning off the curio cabinet so I can caulk it all at the same time and give it all one final coat of paint before the new doors and hardware get installed.

Here if I want to go outside, I reserve that for the morning, when it's a bit cooler and the air is at its cleanest. I do have a lot of sleep issues, so many times I'm not able to get up early, but maybe you can manage that for yourself.

No Kiki. The problem with AC like in malls is that it is set TOO HIGH for my liking.

I don't have AC in my place but I did buy a fan last summer that I never used. I took it out last night and have been using it some today.

With the heat the way it has been over the last few days I have now found the AC in the local mall to be fine. Grocery stores however are still a might too cold especially when I go by the milk coolers or the cheese areas.

I'm nervous too but I don't plan on pushing it. I won't eat all of them. Just one or two to see if I react.
