Here we have not gotten more than a couple inches of snow at a time, and then mostly melted. Has been too cold for snow a bit lately. Undisturbed depths are a few inches. If not for roadways, can barely call it winter. When it warms in March, Feb, we usually get a bunch. But normally by now we would have a foot or 2.

Yeah. I keep hearing about how bad the global warming is, but this looks like it's going to be two pretty terrible winters around here in a row.

We haven't seen a single minute above freezing for almost two weeks.

And now the 5 or 6 inches we were supposed to get on Wednesday looks more like 10 inches with another 4 or 5 on Thursday.

Yesterday I wound up doing a lot of unplanned cooking...

My dog-walking friend brought over a piece of beef heart and beef kidney for the dog's raw food diet, and some chicken feet for broth for us.

Plus, daughter scored a 10.8 lb picnic roast (pork) @ $1.19/lb that was taking up a huge amount of freezer space (on the list)

A ginormous box of prewashed spinach that couldn't even FIT in the frig (something I asked for)

A bit too much chicken breast

So ..

I wilted the spinach, divided, and stuck it in the freezer
Roasted the pork, divided up the cooked pork (4 meals-worth) and broth (2 meals- worth) and tossed the bone and fat. Meat in the freezer, broth in the frig
Divided up the chicken breast for the freezer
Made "raw food" for the dog (gr beef, heart, liver, kidney, egg) for the freezer

Made dinner for the family: roast vegetables (onion, potato, sweet potato, zucchini with olive oil and salt) and "oven fried" chicken (marinade chix pieces in seasoning and salt) coated (egg/thyme/oregano/mustard) and breaded (panko/parmesan/olive oil), and baked

Then I did MOST of the dishes- two whole drain-trays plus a range top of pots, pans, bowls and prep-ware.

Whew!

None of this was in my list of "things to do" but it took up most of the day! OTOH it's something I won't need to do again for a long time.

Plus I helped hubby in the garage for a bit.

Now, on to other things today.

The grass is tall in some spots and the weeds are taking over but- dang!- wouldn't you know but I spotted a few red, ripe tomatoes on my one tomato bush, and some green ones as well!

I had two tomato bushes last year, both Early Girl, and they grew spectacularly (taller than hubby) and bore prolifically. One bush does what Early Girl tomatoes do in the winter: it died down to the ground. The other, a mere 4' away, is still green and producing. I have no idea what's with that one plant, I'm very happy to be able to harvest garden tomatoes in the dead of winter, but why it wants to be a perennial is beyond me! Maybe I can save some seeds and see if new plants would come true to the original.

Gotta water, tho. Last significant rainfall was late Dec IIRC, and altho we got a good soaking the ground is probably dried out by now.

As usual I over planned my day, assuming I could accomplish more than I was capable of, but I did manage to walk the dog, roast a pork picnic roast, do a kitchen cleanup (the kind I hate the most, a couple of sinksful of cups, containers, caps, jars, utensils, pots, pans... took me almost 2 hours washing!, tidy up the house and make dinner

Have some bills pending in my email, need to unbox a bunch of stuff, freeze the pork, make dig food, fix a sprinkler head, water the property, sort the mail... make dinner tomorrow and Sunday, and... that'll be the weekend. Doesn't sound like much, but I bet I don't get ALLA if that done, either!

Hubby and daughter are working on finishing the platform bed. He just oiled it today with Tung oil, and it is a thing of beauty!!

Most of it is Euro steamed beech. We spent a HUGE amt of time picking out planks at the lumberyard looking for boards that were straight and with good figure and... OMG it's amazing! I'll try and post pix when I get a chance.

Is this a new bed or the one you were talking about quite a while ago?

I've never actually seen any pictures of this. Looking forward to it.

I'm glad to hear that you're getting so much done recently.

I've just got to turn that guilt of not getting much done on my end in comparison to inspiration to get back into getting things done.

I managed to put about an hour into sanding walls, trim and baseboard in the pantry as well as pulling out the quarter round off the baseboard and removing any nails down there yesterday before losing interest.

My plan now that I have some coffee in me is to finish with the sanding and cleanup and at least getting some mud up there. There was a lot of damage done in that closet to the walls and the trim for the shelving.

I think I'm going to go to the store tomorrow and buy another large tub of plastic wood, now that I know I can get it to keep for over a year before going bad. There are two pieces of the trim that appear to have been broken toward the front on an angle that I'd like to re-shape with some plastic wood to make look like it was whole pieces. At first I thought it was done on purpose since both of them are at almost identical angles, but they didn't do it on the other side or on any of the other pieces of trim on the left side either. I'm guessing they had some old trim from somewhere else and put it up even though a few of the pieces were broken because "who cares? It's just a closet".

I still need more of that wood for other things, like extending the two window sills in the living room before putting up window trim, fixing both the front and back door jambs and one or two other things I know I wanted to use it for that aren't coming to mind right now anyhow, so most of it should get used up in the next year.

Brenda I'm so envious of your weather this winter.

Not quite freezing today, but the closest we've been to it in about 3 weeks.

It'll be 40 tomorrow. Just enough to start us off with a ton of snow melt and a few hours of rain before we get the 10 to 15" of snow they're predicting in the 48 hours between Tuesday and Thursday night. The entire area is going to be an ice rink for weeks.

Last night they upped that from 8" to 12", and now I'm seeing possibly 15".

Then it will be at least a week until we get a day warm enough to melt any of it. And that's only if the weather doesn't change for the worse, which it hasn't done once since the beginning of the month.

:(

Managed to buckle down and actually put a few hours in on the pantry today. Got everything else I needed sanded down and cleaned up before putting a coat of joint compound on any of the various holes in the walls and the trim.

To give you an idea of how bad the pantry was (and the entire house), there was a HUGE patch job done down by the baseboard, and I never even noticed it until this morning. I'm guessing they made a huge hole in there at some ponit when they fed the phone cord up to the hole that no longer exists for it in the kitchen (I tiled over it half a year ago).

They didn't bother finishing it, or even sanding it down or putting a needed 2nd and 3rd coat on it. Just left it in there like that. And the pantry has been so nasty for a decade I didn't even know.

I think I'm going to go out and pick up that wood putty today so I can get it up there. It's going to need some drying time, and I'm feeling the itch to do it, so I might as well put myself together and go run some errands so I can get that up there. I still need to sand everything down and likely hit more spots with additional mud before I can even think about putting any caulk in there, so no sense in wasting another day on the wood putty.

Yeah. Kind of at a stand-still now. I'm hoping that I'm not wasting my time.

Menards stopped carrying the DAP wood filler, apparently. All they had was Minwax and Elmers. Not a chance in hell I'm paying the price they wanted for Minwax, but after putting up the Elmer's I'm not sure if it's going to be up to the job.

I'm using it to do something that it is not designed to be used for, but the DAP wasn't designed for this use either. I've used DAP on enough things to have no doubt that it would be up to the task, but I think I may have just wasted 7 bucks and maybe a day or two of drying time.

I certainly don't want to put a fan on it to hasten the process. It's got to dry on its own time and hopefully not crack much of at all.

There's other things I can do while I'm waiting on that. I can still sand down the stuff I patched today and get most of the caulk up tomorrow so I can get most of the thing primed. But depending on how this putty goes it might really end up holding up the project now that I've gotten started.

Right now it is pretty good SIX, but there is a call for snow and rain mixed on Wednesday. Just have to see if the snow arrives but with the rain it won't stay.

It is sitting at around 44F which is good for the end of January. Hard to say what February will look like.

I probably should have thought out my braces/molds for the wood putty better than what I'd used. I put a few blocks of wood under where I needed them and attached them to the walls with my brad nailer. I knew I'd have some small holes to patch when I took them out, but I had no idea that doing so on walls made of plaster would completely blow them out when I pulled the blocks down. Would have hardly done any damage to drywall.

Oh well...

At least I seemed to have been able to remove the blocks without too much damage to the integrity of the still somewhat malleable putty. I didn't want the putty to dry so much that the blocks broke it when I tried to get them off.

I think sanding these is going to be a nightmare, but at least it seems like they're going to hold up and do what I wanted them to do. We'll see what happens in a day or two when they dry completely. It would be nice if I could have a fan on them, but I know if I do that there will be cracks all over and it just won't work.

Oh yeah... I'm not going to be reusing those shelving units.

Under the extremely hard to scrap off contact paper that was all over everything else, there's that old-timey yellowish high gloss paint that is probably from the 60's and full of lead.

And that's on top of some awful wood with huge knots and defects that occured naturally, let alone all the dings and dents they got from wear and tear over the years.

I'll probably just worry about finishing the room for now and see if I can catch a sale on something or find something in the remnants worth using.

I'm half thinking of just throwing all that old shelving out in the garbage. I honestly don't even think it's worth the time to peel off the contact paper off the other 9 shelves, and I don't even think that the shelving is garage worthy. I think somebody would probably kill themselves if they burned it in a fire pit.

I've changed my stance on wood putty/filler.

It seems that the fact Menard's doesn't carry the DAP brand anymore ended up being a lucky break for me. For what I needed this for, the Elmer's stuff was WAY better. Sanding it was a dream compared to the nightmare that the DAP stuff would have been to shape.

Now... I'm not sure how this Elmer's stuff would hold up to abuse, but because of where I'm using it, I'm not worried about it. Once the second coat dries overnight and it's sanded down and painted, you're not even going to be able to tell that the two shelf holders made from baseboard were ever broke in the first place.

Even better, I was so happy with how well that went that I decided to use it on the ends of all 10 baseboards as they met the door frame on the inside. The actual baseboard on the floor was coped to fit the door frame nicely, but they just made straight cuts that looked pretty stupid for the shelving brackets. I was going to use some backer rod and caulk it, but after the caulk shrank it would look like I caulked it. Once this dries and I sand it, it's going to look like all 10 boards were coped properly to the frame.

I sanded all the joint compound down on the walls and trim too, so once I sand tomorrow I'm going to give the entire closet a coat of primer and see if any more repairs need to be done from there. This is going to look fantastic when it's done.

It ended up getting up to 47 degrees today! That's 8 degrees higher than they said it would yesterday. So I was able to get outside and get all the snow and the ice off of the walkway finally.

It's raining right now, but it's turning to snow soon.

15" incoming.

Yeah... It's still not as bad as last February was (fingers crossed).

We had a whole month where it didn't get above freezing and we had 40" of snow on our roofs that entire time.

At least it got almost up to 50 today and melted most of the old stuff away before this new stuff starts coming down.

We've already got an inch or so now. It's not snowing at the moment, but I'm sure I'll be shoveling and blowing early tomorrow.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

So ... I'm not trying to rub in the weather here (and we pay for not having a real winter by having drought, relentless summer heat and sun, and a year-round fire season!) ... but the oxalis is blooming, and the honeybees are all over it.

OTOH these honey bees are a bit smaller than usual, not as chunky, somewhat aggressive, and really REALLY fast fliers. And that makes me think they might possibly be Africanized (which are still real honeybees, just not as nice as the 100% European kind). But I noticed the same kind of bee and the same kind of behavior a few blocks down on a blooming rosemary shrub. So if it's a problem, it's a neighborhood-wide problem and not limited to one very close by me. And for sure there's no hive in my yard, so there's nothing I can do about it anyway.

Also I saw an unusual hawk today. Looking it up, I think it was a Swainson’s Hawk, which is the only black-chested small raptor I found.

Apparently they migrate to Argentina for the winter. Some hawks migrate? Who knew? Anyway, for some reason they seem to think summer is over in Argentina, and winter is over over here.

Speaking of weather, again, I think our rain is over for the year. We had a remarkable December, but nothing to speak of in January and by now the rainy season is passing. So we'll be at about 11" which is 4" short out of 15". But that isn't bad for a la Nina year, and not as bad 2017-2018 when we had about 4 3/4" of rain, and 2020-2021 when we had about 5 3/4" of rain.

Yeah. The weather is kind of a drag here. We have not gotten our normal allotment of snow this winter. It has mostly been too cold for snow here. Weatherguessers said yesterday was supposed to be 38F but ended up 46F, and today is single digits again.
Snow to the South, not sure about north of here.

So we have enough of Nature's Air Conditioning, but not enough snow, which cleans out the crud from the air.

And I keep forgetting to take Boost. Yesterday really felt it while cleaning up remnant snow and ice. Should have taken it the past 4 days.

Yesterday didn't get everything done by dusk. So was still moving things around while dark. Had my very best Battery Charger on the engine bay while moving one vehicle, and it jumped down, and I ended up driving over it, crushing it.
My very best, most durable, Battery Charger. Dang. Gingerly cradled most of the pieces, reconnected internal connectors, and it seems to be working at the moment, but I have not glued, strapped, or cobbled it back together. Really ticks me off. That might be really hard to replace.

I sanded down the wood putty and put the first coat of paint on all of the trim. Since the paint is labeled as a paint/primer, I just hit all the marks, discolorations and anywhere that I mudded on the walls while I was at it.

Next step will be to put a third coat of paint on the ceiling, because this paint is trash. While I'm doing that, I'll just roll it out on the walls too so I've got more or less a blank slate to work with and see if there are any more repairs that need to be made.

After that, it was 2 1/2 hours of fun out in the snow. I don't know why I thought it would be light snow. It wasn't. At least 12" out there of heavy snow. But the wind is so bad that it's drifting everywhere too. The bermuda triangle had about 2 feet of snow to clear out just so I could get to the garage, and then I had to go through the house and try not to get everything wet so I could shovel the porch and the front walkway. Usually I'd just walk through the snow that way, but not with this much.

Snowblower was a champ and got the job done, but it was miserable. Wind kept changing direction every 3 seconds and always seemed to go straight toward my face. I had icicle beard and eyebrows when I came inside.

Hopefully we don't get too much more before tomorrow night, but the worst of it is over.

I found an old half-gallon of some high quality ceiling paint that is also a primer. It starts out pink and dries white. So I used that and finished the ceiling and primed all the walls with it last nigth.

Assuming I don't have too much damage to fix, I'll be caulking today and probably painting up all the trim to finish. The wood putty worked great.

I didn't get any snow overnight, but 2/3rds of the front walkway needs to be re-shoveled. You can't even tell that I did it yesterday because of the snow drift.

Good luck at Mah Jong today Brenda.

Put my backer rod where it was needed and caulked all 10 tracks, the baseboard and the door on the inside of the pantry. Then I went out and shoveled all the drift off my walkway. There was a TON of it, and it was a lot heavier than yesterday. Good news is that despite all the snow there's like none on my house or garage roof.

Somehow the driveway didn't get much drift, so I'm not going to bother dusting it. I lucked out there, since I saw my next door neighbor re-shoveling his entire driveway which faces the same direction as my walkway this morning.

My plan is to get both final coats of the white enamel up on the baseboard, tracks and inside door frame of the pantry today. That's probably all I'll get to, but you never know... Sometimes when I finally get to the painting part of a job I get so excited about it that I end up staying up past midnight working on it.

I'm going to have some pictures of it before/after without any of the shelving in there. I know that Kiki has mentioned before when organizing she likes to have shelves up high and drawers down below.

I'm probably not going to be building full drawers or anything, but I am considering buying some drawer tracks and making pullout shelving for the bottom three shelves. Would like to know everyone's opinion on that when I get to that point.

Final coat up on all the trim.

It looks so freakin' good painted after shaping the wood putty to make everything look pro.

Going on 7PM here... Think I'm going to call it a night on the work. 3 days of shoveling along with 3 days of spending a lot of time on my knees scraping, sanding and painting kinda beat me up.

Think I won about $6. There 9 of us playing today. Booby prize was $2. So, I would guess that 2nd place and 3rd got $4 each.

It was nice to see the try to break through the fog. But now at 8:30pm, the fog has settled in for the night.

It's so weird that Die Hard is considered a Christmas movie today. I must have seen that half a dozen times when I was a kid. I don't think I ever heard somebody calling it a Christmas movie until a few years ago on the internet, and now almost everyone says it's a Christmas movie.

$6. Yeah... when I play games I don't play for much money either.

But if there's nothing on the line at all it seems kind of pointless.

I can sympathise! Tomorrow, grab a cuppa and put your feet up! when nature dumps on you, you gotta pace yourself (altho, honestly, with blowing drifting snow, I would wait until all the drifting was over, otherwise you might shovel the same area multiple times)

Would you say you caught up with your yearly snowfall, then?

Yanno... I don't even know what our yearly snowfall is. It's so erratic around these parts. I know we've had years since I've lived in this house were we only ended up with like 5" of snow, but last year we had about 60".

But yeah, I think we've probably at least hit average now. We had like 15" over the course of a week or two a while back and now nearly double that. We didn't get the 4" yesterday into this morning that we were supposed to get, but we got about another 1" and it's still snowing right now.

The drifting seems to have stopped, but that's probably because there's no snow on anybody's roofs anymore.

Hey... I'm fine with that. Better on the ground and shoveling twice than weighing down the roof for the next month until it melts.

I have to keep up with the shoveling on the front walkway though. I didn't do that earlier this winter and it was an ice rink under the snow that I had to cover back up because I didn't want the post men and women slipping and cracking their heads open. I'll probably go out there and clean up whatever little came down last night sometime today between paint coats.

I really need to start working out again and stop thinking about it. It's not bad most of the year, but during winter when I'm more likely to not be doing anything for a few days at a time, it really kicks my ass when I have to put my back into the shoveling while I'm also doing rehab work. At least I haven't tweaked my back (yet).

That pantry has really been kicking my ass since it's so tight in there and I have to avoid touching anything I've painted with my clothes while also spending a lot of time on my knees and in lousy positions doing detail work once I get to the bottom half of it.

Wall paint going up today!

Give me a few. I'm going to post a couple of pictures soon.

How's things by you, Sigs?

Pantry Preview...

At this point, I'd already put a little bit of mud up in here on bad parts toward the front of it. The pantry was still crammed full of stuff at that point, so with leftover mud I had for the coat closet I'd just use it up there and out on my back porch rather than throwing it out.

You can see from this first pic how the baseboards are turned upside down and were designed to hold the shelving. You can also see that aside from how badly beat up they were, number 2 and number 3 from the top down were broke on the bottom-front, and instead of coping them to the interior door frame like they did the actual baseboard, they just made straight cuts that look like hell. There were also some sizable gaps on the bottom of a few of them, none of them as bad as that one you can see on the top board.

Up close and personal, you can see the worse broken board of the two. I believe these were split by nails when they were installed. That hole in the wall you can see right next to the door frame was because of a nail that I think split the board and was just painted over. Taking that nail out damaged the wall a bit.

I used a brad nailer to put a scrap piece of wood as a template for my putty after making it level. At first when I saw the damage this caused, I regretted that decision, but nothing I couldn't easily fill in. It's probably the way I'd do it again in the future if I ever have to.

First coat of wood putty.

Sanded down after 2nd coat of wood putty. As you can see, I had decided at that point to fill in the straight cuts of the boards, so while doing the 2nd coat on the two broken boards I also filled in all 10 boards tight to the door frame, and filled them in on the back wall where caulk alone wouldn't do the job.

I used excess wood putty that existed when I did some preliminary shaping about an hour after application to fill in the brad nail/template damage.

Primer, Caulk and two coats of enamel later. Looks like those pieces of wood grew together.

I never did put a 3rd coat of wood putty on there, even though the pictures made it look like it was warranted. I've gotten pretty good with shaping caulk too, so while I was caulking everything up proper I squirted some extra wherever it needed some, rubbed it in with my fingers and then shaped it with a damp sponge.

No sanding, no mess.

You can also see that the gaps from the door frame to the wall are filled. Those were fairly sizable and existed on about 60% of the interior door frame. I probably could have gotten away without backer rod, and it was fairly difficult to jam it in there with a flat head screwdriver, but with the rod back there the caulk won't shrink and crack and look like hell a year from now.

Looks like new now.

Here's my idea...

I'm considering just building straight up shelves for the top two tracks.

But on the bottom, I'm considering buying 3 sets of soft-close drawer slide systems, screwing them into the wall above the tracks with good drywall anchors, and just having pull out shelving for the bottom three.

Also, NOTE TO SELF: I need to use some of my ORB black spray paint to paint those gold screw tips on the hinges. The screws that came with the hinges were about the shortest things ever and in many cases on these old door jambs weren't enough to get the job done.

Yeah, I know. I think I've seen it a couple of times over the years. I've seen all of them but the best are the first and the 3rd which has Graham Greene in it. Tried watching the last one and it sucked.

That's why they award winnings and something sometimes goes back to the Senior Centre for use of the room. But not yesterday with so few playing. I don't think.

Well, I think I would play without any winnings. It gets me out of my place and interacting with people.

True, that, about the walkways. Gotta keep them clear for the postal service!

Have you thought of salt for the ice? I've heard there's some sort of urea formula that doesn't burn your grass.

Oh, busy at this end. I do as much as I can each day. Yesterday I dug up some beets for dinner and did a little weeding out front.

Did one smart thing last year: I had an old tarp originally for the woodpile, but I spread it over the cleared part of the veggie patch and used it to solarize that part: kill weed seeds with heat.

Agreed. Die Hard: With a Vengeance is my all time favorite in the series.

I only saw the 4th one after that and didn't care for it at all. I don't know how many there were after the 4th one, but I never saw any of them.

Yeah. I thought I'd have to shovel a tiny bit today with the snow, but even though it never got above freezing the sun was out and it all melted.

Good thing too, because I didn't have any down time between coats drying today. I managed to do everything more efficiently than I've ever done it before and only cleaned my brush and roller at the end of the day one time.

Glad to hear you're still up and about. You've been feeling good then?

I did all three cut-ins with the brush and two coats with the roller in the pantry today, so it's all done as far as repairs and paint go.

Tomorrow I should get the flooring in.

Not sure when I'm going to do the shelving though. It will require me to cut down wood out in my garage, and the next few weeks are all in the 20's and I don't feel like doing it when it's that cold. I don't want to feel rushed because it's so cold and end up making a bad cut because I was in a hurry.

Maybe I'll take a day or two off after the floor is in and figure out what I'm going to do next. I might finally extend those two window sills in the living room so I can get the new window trim up.
