Mine's a 95 Toyota corolla sw, but with a manual shift. But even though it's been a one-owner car all its 'life' (me), at this point vital things are breaking down. The ac and trip odometer went years ago (I never got them fixed - I'll see your cheap ass bid and raise it), but just a few months back the hydraulic valve that moves the clutch back and forth went kersplat. Fortunately I found a cheap good mechanic.

The first time I noticed a sticking sensation while driving would have been a few years ago. It was very rare though. It hasn't been a constant problem until the last month or two though.

The bad starts happened in mid spring.



Changing the transmission fluid on this car is as easy as removing the plug, draining it and then replacing the fluid through the dip stick. Changing the filter would be a bit more complicated, but probably not too bad.

Yeah. I have no clue what any of my other cars were. The transmission went out on my first ride when I was around 18 years old, but they wanted more than I paid for the car to rebuild it.

I had seen that it could be a bit more complicated to change the fluid, but these mid 90's Toyotas seem to be extremely user friendly. Thanks for the tips. I'll definately be watching some youtube videos before I do anything since I'd have to walk a few miles to buy spare parts if something goes awry, assuming they'd even stock something like that. Otherwise I'd be waiting for it to ship online.

I think so... It's an automatic, like every car I've ever owned. Don't really know much about transmissions since they've all just done all of the work for me and I never thought about them until they stopped working right.

I drive really careful these days compared to my youth, and I don't ever tailgate. Replaced the breakpads a while back and gave them a thorough test, so hopefully I'm good. Fingers crossed.

I'm usually alright in the cold, at least until it dips down into the double digits negative. But it was almost seventy degrees just a short while ago and it was ZERO with the windchill last night at work, and the wind was howling.

So glad to be home now. Especially since I stopped being such a cheap ass and I've got the thermostat at 65. Not exactly toasty on the 1st floor where I sleep at around 60 degrees, but nothing a blanket won't fix. :)

Keep your head up. I know that is much easier said than done sometimes, but I can say from experience now that once I started making a real effort to do that myself that good things started coming my way. Nothing overnight, and nothing mind blowing when you just look at the little things by themselves, but when I look back on the last 1 year, 11 months and 11 days of my sobriety and all the stuff that I've accomplished in that time I'm in a much better situation than I used to be in.

It's always going to be an uphill struggle since my days of making "easy livin" money are over and I'm not getting any younger, but to look at things positively that just means more opportunities to learn new things like all of the stuff I've learned about cars this summer instead of just taking it in to get it fixed or buying a new one.



That's awesome that you can make your own scarves (and I'm assuming other things as well?). I know how good it feels to create something of your own and sit back and say "I did that" when it's done. Maybe there's something else you can find to add to your hobby list in the cold months?

I've got to get back into my big project myself. It's been about a month since I worked on it at all, and even though last week off was my first time where I had absolutely nothing pressing to do I couldn't even find the desire to work on it. I think I've just got to adjust to the cold again. I think maybe I'm just a bit mentally exhausted after the mid-terms too. I spent too much time paying attention to that, and I really don't know why I bothered really.

Extra sets aren't super expensive, so I'm planning on ordering a few more maybe for a Christmas present or something. Make something huge and a little more sturdy out of it.

I thought it was pretty funny that the Engrish instructions showed 3 samples that you could build with it, and all of them would require more pieces than came in a single set. :)

It's actually not hard at all. It was hard breaking the cycle at first, for sure, but I haven't had any cravings or even any real thoughts about drinking for at least a year and a half. I'm wondering how much of my problem with beer was alcoholism and how much of it was just me being bored.


I've always wanted to learn how to play mah jong since they played it in Deadwood. I don't know how to play that game itself, and I'm not sure what all the tiles mean, but I do enjoy playing a game called Shanghai that uses those tiles. It's sort of to Mah Jong as Solitare is to Poker.

There is a guy who I watch on youtube who's published a few books. I'll try to remember to see if I can find out who he uses.

Sorry to hear about your mom. I keep trying to persuade my own mom to start working out again to increase her mobility. It's a lot better with her MS down in Arizona because of the climate than it was up here, but that's all the more reason for her to try to improve things now. My step-dad is quite a bit older and won't be around forever. I have no idea what's going to happen in the future there myself. I already told my brother not to expect me to take her in because I'm not going to end up being a living caricature of Principal Skinner.

I haven't really ever bought my niece much of anything. She's got a billion toys. I'm the only person I'm aware of that she gets excited to see just because she wants to play instead of asking first thing "what did you get me?". Now that she's getting old enough to appreciate stuff and she can start playing with interesting things that we both can enjoy I'm going to be looking into getting more stuff that we can do when she comes over. I'll definitely be looking into toys that teach like my grandpa did when I was her age.


The seafoam seems to have worked wonders with my engine and oil pan. I haven't had any missfires for a long time now, and I haven't had any problems starting the car or keeping it running once it's started. On the other hand though, the transmission is not looking good. I keep hoping we'll get a bought of warm weather for me to drain it and put new fluid in, but it's been too cold for me to do that and it's not likely to warm up until spring. I'm just hoping that it survives the winter and even if I have to learn how to replace the transmission at that point I've heard I can get a rebuilt one for around $250. Finger's crossed.

I guess too many people were falling asleep with them and ending up with low-temperature burns which are just as nasty as regular ones - they just take longer to get.

Yes. A couple that run a hamburger place in a strip mall food court near where I live, I asked the wife how to say thank you and she told me.

Learning about the tiles in mah jong is easy but learning how to count the points is hard. I've been playing with the tiles for over 3years and I still get mixed up in the point counting sometimes. Shanghai or Tai pei was the first mah jong type of game I found on the computer. Then I found true mah jong and got hooked. I still play on the computer and can play for hours. The tiles consist of the four winds, 3 sets of dragons, characters which are numbered 1-9, circles numbered 1-9, bamboo numbered 1-9. Also 4 sets of flowers.

Ah. So you've played Shanghai before. :)

I didn't know it was also called Tai Pei. I only knew the tiles represented numbers kind of in passing, since you don't need to know the actual number values in any version of the game I've ever played. The circles and bamboo were self explanatory, but I just assumed the characters had to be numbers written out as well. The flowers were kind of tricky for me to pick up without any context or instructions.

It's a fun game. I've never known anybody who knows how to play Mah Jong.
