You will need to drive your Honda for at least 200-300 miles through various driving conditions in order to complete the required Emission Monitors. Sometimes simply driving an extend length of time does not necessary mean the emission monitors will run. Your Honda’s emission monitors are internal self-tests which the Engine Control Unit performs to ensure your is not polluting and is running efficiently. The entire process of self-testing various emission control systems is called a Drive Cycle. Follow the emission drive cycle trace below. Obey all traffic laws while performing drive cycles. Perform at your own risk.

HOW TO PERFORM A HONDA DRIVE CYCLE

The following is a Honda OBDII Drive Cycle Pattern.

COLD START: Begin from Cold Start, and ignition in OFF position for at least 1 hour. ensure your Honda’s fuel tank is between 1/4 and 3/4 full and engine coolant temperature must be below 122°F and within 11°F of the ambient air temperature. Do not leave the key on prior to the cold start or the heated oxygen sensor diagnostic may not run.

IDLE TIME: Run your Honda’s engine (do not drive) for 2 1/2 minutes with the air conditioner on and rear defroster on. During this period the ECU will be running the Oxygen Sensor Heater self-test, Air Injection System Passive Air test, EVAP Purge "No Flow" test, Misfire Detection.

ACCELERATE: Turn off the air conditioner and rear defroster and begin driving. As soon as possible apply half throttle until 55mph is reached. The ECU will now run self-tests on the Misfire Detection, Fuel Trim, and EVAP Purge Flow.

HOLD STEADY: Now hold your vehicle speed steady at 55mph for three minutes. During this time the Oxygen Sensor O2 response, Air Intrusive (AIS System), EGR Flow, Purge Valve, Misfire Detection, and Fuel Trim diagnostics will be performed.

DECELERATE: During this step you want to slowly let off the accelerator pedal. Do not brake or shift your Honda in order to slow down. It is important to let the vehicle coast along gradually slowing down to 20 mph. The ECU will once again self-test the EGR System, EVAP Purge System and Long Term Fuel Trims.

ACCELERATE: Go ahead and accelerate again at 3/4 throttle until 55-60mph is reached. This will perform the same self tests as during the first acceleration step.

HOLD STEADY: Hold steady speed once again. This time at 55mph for five minutes. During this time, in addition to running the self-tests as during the first HOLD STEADY step, the ECU will perform the catalyst monitor diagnostics. If the catalyst (Catalytic Converter) is marginal or the battery has been disconnected, it may take 5 complete driving cycles to determine the state of the catalyst,or in order to Complete the CAT Monitor.

DECELERATE: This will perform the same diagnostics as in the first Deceleration. Remember not to press your Honda’s brake or shift gears during deceleration.

This should complete the drive cycle on your Honda. To ensure all monitors are complete use a scan tool to view the monitors. You may want to complete the drive cycle 2-3 times.

As an interested layperson I think it all boils down to "storm tracks" - how far south "tongues" of arctic air extend south, since storms form at the interface of cold and warm air- and whether that interface sits over California. So far we've been very fortunate to have those storms track right over most of California. But since those tongues or lobes of cold air have been remaining pretty static (over months or years) next year the track may have shifted, and then we would be in for a long multi-season drought. When the Arctic warms considerably we might not have any tongues of air that are cold enough to reach this far south, and then SoCal will be in permanent drought. I'd sure hate to see that happen, there is a lot of unique wildlife here. (It's no just all godforsaken urban areas),

More impressively, the mountains are covered with snow, from their peaks ( about 10,000 feet at the highest) to about 6,500 feet. I hadn't realized it but both passes thru the mountains (the Tejon pass to the northwest, the Cajon pass to the northeast) were closed for over a day because of the snow. But you just can't believe what it looks like. With drifts so far down, they look like a forbidding wall of snow. Unbelievable. Every now and again, nature reminds me how fierce she is.

I've gotten about 2/3rds of the window/door casings and 4/5ths of the baseboard that I bought painted with a coat of white gloss enamel and ready to go up. I actually can't paint any more until I start getting some of this stuff up since I ran out of room to stage it.

I ended up buying a brad nailer to do the job, and boy was that a good $35 investment. I can't imagine how much time and frustration I saved with that purchase. Kind of a pain lugging my compressor in and out of the house since I only have one hose and I can't exactly have windows open to feed them through during the winter anyhow, but if I plan this all out right I should be able to keep the double work down to a minimum.

I was able to install a few of the door casings in the master bedroom while my brother was here, but there wasn't much time to do that since the thing was on order and didn't show up until late yesterday.

I'm also going to have a bit of a problem with the old miter saw that my stepdad gave me since the bevel function requires making precise adjustments every time with a square and is not by any means easy to set up. 45's for the casings are going to be easy, but cutting the 45's for the baseboard is going to be a real bitch. I'd love to just cut everything to the exact measurements I'll need first and then just do all of them with a perfect 45 set up, but I'm not that skilled and if I try doing that I know I'm bound to make incorrect cuts.

The windows are going to be a project all by themselves too. I had to rip out everything when I did them since it was all crap. They didn't even have any window sills on the 2nd floor, so I'm going to have to create those from scratch. There's a pretty good rebate sale on 8 foot lengths of 1x4 pine by me this week though, so I should be able to buy those and make them. I'll have to dig out my router and find the bits too, because I want to make fancy edges for them.

I'm going to re-use all of the doors that were up there. Both the closet doors and the bedroom/bathroom entry doors. Some of them have holes in them, but I'll just patch them and sand them down because I'm going to be painting them white to match the trim and they'll all look the same when it's done. Unfortunately, the small bedroom didn't have a door for the closet, so I'll have to see if I can find one that closely matches the same style that is used on the master bedroom closet and the linen closet in the hall. It shouldn't be too difficult since they're just flat and seem rather generic.


Going to do an inventory today and see what I still need to pick up tomorrow. Probably won't need anything except for some more nails for the new gun and the wood I'm going to use for the window framing. Unless they just happen to have a closet door that will work for me on sale now, I'll probably put that off until I find a good price on it.
