BRENDA: Hi Sig. Looking at the scenery I thought it was one of the lakes here in BC BUT when I saw the bridge I KNEW it wasn't filmed in BC. There are no bridges in BC that look like that. So, I went and looked it up. It was filmed in Washington State and little into Oregon. That bridge is in Washington State.

OH, AWESOME! Mystery solved!! It was just bugging the shit out of me bc I knew it wasn't a So Cal location!

No worries Sig. Washington State has another odd bridge that floats.

BRENDA: Washington State and BC share a lot of wind and rain. So if we are taking a wind beating then the coast of Washington is too.

How often does that happen, canceling the ferries?

KIKI- fascinating map! What I find really interesting is a north polar view, where you can see "lobes" of air masses extending towards the temperate zones. Quite often five or six lobes.

Ferry sailings are usually only cancelled when the winds are so bad that the Strait of Georgia is deemed unsafe for boat travel and that mostly happens in the winter. Going either way one or more sailings can be cancelled a day or delayed depending on how bad the winds are and how choppy the water is.

But it DOES look like your wind has died down, so - good news for that.

Hey KIKI, no worries.

It has died down and that is good. People will be able to get over to the Island. Ooops, I mean Vancouver Island for their Christmas stuff.

Tree PURCHASED! Not too big, not too small, and not too full because it has to fit into a small space.

OTOH the battery in my car is dead dead dead. I jump-started it and ran it for 30 minutes and tried to start it again ... I doubt there was even one spare electron in there!

oy. A day of sudden progress and sudden reversals. The dead batter was on the car that I was hoping to sellto our sometime gardener. Fortunately I had gotten it thru AAA, and (she said brightly!) they come with a 3-year warranty. So after hunting around a bit, I found the invoice in the glove compartment where I had left it, and AAA came out and tested the alternator and replaced the battery for free.

YAY!

Here in CA you have to smog check your car before xfer title, so I found a nearby smog check station with an online coupon (YAY!) and boogied over there, only to have the car fail smog test.

DARN!

It's passed every other year since 2001 so what happened?

According to the tech, when the battery drains the memory fades from the onboard computer. Apparently (I surmise) the car learns a number of setpoints while you drive, and once those were lost it needed to relearn them. So all I have to do, according to the tech, is drive the car about 200 miles and bring in back for a free re-test.

YAY!

In 10 calendar days.

Ooooh...

Then when going thru the mail I got a number of medical bills because ONCE AGAIN the billing office is billing the wrong gorram insurance! Goddamnit, I've called those idiots at least three times by now! And at THIS point, I'm no longer even covered by that insurance! Yes, I know ... I was covered by that insurance when I had sinus surgery and the insurance SHOULD pay, but between the idiots in the billing office and the insurance throwing up roadblocks this will probably be a six-month fix. I also got an inscrutable letter fromhubby's retirement about his RMD ... the amount that they claimed they paid him doesn't match the check that we got OR what they said was coming. And no matter which figures I look at, they under-withheld taxes despite me giving them explicit instructions. Jezus Christos, I seem to be spending an inordinate amount of time trying to correct othere people's mistakes.

And finally ...never buy clothes from Amazon. I'll have to return some Xmas gifts because the items are too small, too scratchy and too cheap.

On the bright side, the medium-ish sized Xmas tree is up and decorated and it is a thing of beauty! And I made what was probably a tasty tandoori chicken and vegetable curry, with onions, potatoes, garlic, ginger, and minced hot pepper, tomato, cauliflower, chick peas, and peas, spiced with curry and garam masala. It might have been too harsh but the recipe calls for finishing it with heavy cream which smoothed out the flavor I think. Anyway, family enjoyed it and that's what counts!

Or maybe I could do this ...

Quote:

Changed the Car Battery and Failed Smog Check

I changed the car battery. It failed the smog check because there is no data; the tech said no monitors. I drove it 250 miles and it failed the smog check again. I drove my car for another 110 miles and took it to Honda dealer to check the monitors. They said it will cost me $320.00. How can I reset the car monitor? Is there any place to check the car monitor and reset it at cheaper cost?

Answer:

You will need to drive your Honda for at least 200-300 miles through various driving conditions in order to complete the required Emission Monitors. Sometimes simply driving an extend length of time does not necessary mean the emission monitors will run. Your Honda’s emission monitors are internal self-tests which the Engine Control Unit performs to ensure your is not polluting and is running efficiently. The entire process of self-testing various emission control systems is called a Drive Cycle. Follow the emission drive cycle trace below. Obey all traffic laws while performing drive cycles. Perform at your own risk.

HOW TO PERFORM A HONDA DRIVE CYCLE

The following is a Honda OBDII Drive Cycle Pattern.

COLD START: Begin from Cold Start, and ignition in OFF position for at least 1 hour. ensure your Honda’s fuel tank is between 1/4 and 3/4 full and engine coolant temperature must be below 122°F and within 11°F of the ambient air temperature. Do not leave the key on prior to the cold start or the heated oxygen sensor diagnostic may not run.

IDLE TIME: Run your Honda’s engine (do not drive) for 2 1/2 minutes with the air conditioner on and rear defroster on. During this period the ECU will be running the Oxygen Sensor Heater self-test, Air Injection System Passive Air test, EVAP Purge "No Flow" test, Misfire Detection.

ACCELERATE: Turn off the air conditioner and rear defroster and begin driving. As soon as possible apply half throttle until 55mph is reached. The ECU will now run self-tests on the Misfire Detection, Fuel Trim, and EVAP Purge Flow.

HOLD STEADY: Now hold your vehicle speed steady at 55mph for three minutes. During this time the Oxygen Sensor O2 response, Air Intrusive (AIS System), EGR Flow, Purge Valve, Misfire Detection, and Fuel Trim diagnostics will be performed.

DECELERATE: During this step you want to slowly let off the accelerator pedal. Do not brake or shift your Honda in order to slow down. It is important to let the vehicle coast along gradually slowing down to 20 mph. The ECU will once again self-test the EGR System, EVAP Purge System and Long Term Fuel Trims.

ACCELERATE: Go ahead and accelerate again at 3/4 throttle until 55-60mph is reached. This will perform the same self tests as during the first acceleration step.

HOLD STEADY: Hold steady speed once again. This time at 55mph for five minutes. During this time, in addition to running the self-tests as during the first HOLD STEADY step, the ECU will perform the catalyst monitor diagnostics. If the catalyst (Catalytic Converter) is marginal or the battery has been disconnected, it may take 5 complete driving cycles to determine the state of the catalyst,or in order to Complete the CAT Monitor.

DECELERATE: This will perform the same diagnostics as in the first Deceleration. Remember not to press your Honda’s brake or shift gears during deceleration.

This should complete the drive cycle on your Honda. To ensure all monitors are complete use a scan tool to view the monitors. You may want to complete the drive cycle 2-3 times.

And most importantly (it IS most important for SoCal, it's just that most ppl don't think about it) we got RAIN. 1.75" at my house, and another storm due Christmas, giving us the gift of water.

Kennedy’s words anticipated some of the key themes found in King’s soaring March on Washington address two months later. And that shared moral force, that commonality of thinking between the two speeches, is the most important reason to remember the president’s address, 50 years ago today: it reminds us of a forgotten moment of the civil rights era, when presidential leadership and grass-roots activism worked in creative tension to turn the narrative of civil rights from a regional issue into a national story promoting racial equality and democratic renewal.

Woke up at stupid o'clock to hear the wind whipping the trees and the wind=chimes clanking away. This is the back-end of the storm that blew through last night (downdrafts) which dumped ... according to my "rain gage" 2 and 15/16" of rain. There is a bit of a flood in the back garden area where one downspout empties. I had to empty the rain gage and set it up again because that's all it can hold! And its COLD outside too, by SoCal standards. I have to drive past one of the rivers later today, it'll be interesting to see whether the last two storms overwhelmed the rain retention infrastructures and if rainwater is being dumped into the ocean.

I've been putting peanuts out for the birds and squirrels (and prolly rats and coons) in advance of the storms. That Parking Lot Tree is surely getting a good soaking.

For all the weird stuff going on in the Pacific (The Blob having reasserted itself in the crook of N America, where USA and Canada meet) and the Arctic (massive ice melt) the weather here has been surprisingly normal ... classic, even.

As an interested layperson I think it all boils down to "storm tracks" - how far south "tongues" of arctic air extend south, since storms form at the interface of cold and warm air- and whether that interface sits over California. So far we've been very fortunate to have those storms track right over most of California. But since those tongues or lobes of cold air have been remaining pretty static (over months or years) next year the track may have shifted, and then we would be in for a long multi-season drought. When the Arctic warms considerably we might not have any tongues of air that are cold enough to reach this far south, and then SoCal will be in permanent drought. I'd sure hate to see that happen, there is a lot of unique wildlife here. (It's no just all godforsaken urban areas),

That is nothing over the Christmas week there have been at least 10 earthquakes off the west coast of Vancouver Island. Felt up in Port Hardy, Tofino and Haida Gwaii. One of them was even felt down around where I am. Not my city but Richmond and Vancouver itself.

Scientists say a cluster of quakes like that isn't unusual and nothing to panic about. I just thought it was interesting.

Out and about, running errands and in general observing the aftermath of the cold storm that came thru a couple of days ago. The river that I was driving by was full, some rainwater escaped the various impoundments and fled to the ocean,

More impressively, the mountains are covered with snow, from their peaks ( about 10,000 feet at the highest) to about 6,500 feet. I hadn't realized it but both passes thru the mountains (the Tejon pass to the northwest, the Cajon pass to the northeast) were closed for over a day because of the snow. But you just can't believe what it looks like. With drifts so far down, they look like a forbidding wall of snow. Unbelievable. Every now and again, nature reminds me how fierce she is.

Yes, I am and that is a good feeling. But I still have to go out and do a couple of things on this slightly soggy Saturday.

Need some lamb chops for my New Years dinner. Gotta see if I can find any.

See sights like that up here in the mountains every winter pretty well. Sometimes the passes between Alberta and BC are closed because of the snow and the risk of avalanches.

My brother was visiting, so I wasn't online much the last few days. It was fun getting to hang out with him again for our yearly thing here.

I've gotten about 2/3rds of the window/door casings and 4/5ths of the baseboard that I bought painted with a coat of white gloss enamel and ready to go up. I actually can't paint any more until I start getting some of this stuff up since I ran out of room to stage it.

I ended up buying a brad nailer to do the job, and boy was that a good $35 investment. I can't imagine how much time and frustration I saved with that purchase. Kind of a pain lugging my compressor in and out of the house since I only have one hose and I can't exactly have windows open to feed them through during the winter anyhow, but if I plan this all out right I should be able to keep the double work down to a minimum.

I was able to install a few of the door casings in the master bedroom while my brother was here, but there wasn't much time to do that since the thing was on order and didn't show up until late yesterday.

I'm also going to have a bit of a problem with the old miter saw that my stepdad gave me since the bevel function requires making precise adjustments every time with a square and is not by any means easy to set up. 45's for the casings are going to be easy, but cutting the 45's for the baseboard is going to be a real bitch. I'd love to just cut everything to the exact measurements I'll need first and then just do all of them with a perfect 45 set up, but I'm not that skilled and if I try doing that I know I'm bound to make incorrect cuts.

The windows are going to be a project all by themselves too. I had to rip out everything when I did them since it was all crap. They didn't even have any window sills on the 2nd floor, so I'm going to have to create those from scratch. There's a pretty good rebate sale on 8 foot lengths of 1x4 pine by me this week though, so I should be able to buy those and make them. I'll have to dig out my router and find the bits too, because I want to make fancy edges for them.

I'm going to re-use all of the doors that were up there. Both the closet doors and the bedroom/bathroom entry doors. Some of them have holes in them, but I'll just patch them and sand them down because I'm going to be painting them white to match the trim and they'll all look the same when it's done. Unfortunately, the small bedroom didn't have a door for the closet, so I'll have to see if I can find one that closely matches the same style that is used on the master bedroom closet and the linen closet in the hall. It shouldn't be too difficult since they're just flat and seem rather generic.

Going to do an inventory today and see what I still need to pick up tomorrow. Probably won't need anything except for some more nails for the new gun and the wood I'm going to use for the window framing. Unless they just happen to have a closet door that will work for me on sale now, I'll probably put that off until I find a good price on it.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Glad you got to see your brother Jack.

I have to see if I can find some shelving for some small things. I bought something over the summer but I see it is starting to fall apart and if it falls. Well, some of things on it are breakable. So I need to see if I can find anything around here or in the next city over.

Also have to try and replace my video cabinet as I just realized how broke that is.

If its not one thing its another.

Hey SIX, welcome back! Glad that you got a chance to see your brother; it's nice seeing family for Christmas!

Jiminy, you're sure managing to keep busy! Are you SURE you don't want to come over, enjoy our weather and do some interior trim??? I think you're a perfectionist, and I'll be willing to bet a rather large sum of money that anything that you did would be vastly superior to the bozos who last worked on this house (no, not hubby. He's a perfectionist too.)

In less than 10 days I have got 190 miles out of 200 required for a free smog recheck and for sure I'll clock that in once I see the dentist tomorrow. So, mail out bill payments and one LAST gift(!), dentist, smog check (fingers crossed that it passes) and general recycling (dear daughter's project) and film recycling, and some sprinkler system parts. And with that cleared away I can get to a couple of the more irritating problems that came in the mail just before Xmas ... misbilling by three different doctor's offices and a Medicare problem. I think I hate dealing with hospital and insurance bureaucracies about as much I hate doing my own taxes. It's all pretty nonsensical and ridiculously complicated!

I'll be posting another general Happy New Year, but I wanted to wish you all personally the very best of the upcoming year. May you all have a healthy, prosperous and happy New Year filled with friendship and love.

I'd love to be in warm weather right now and help you out, but I gotta keep working on the house and find a job around here.

As for the perfectionism, I'm going to do what I can here. Unfortunately, I have to work with the tools that I've got, so my ancient Craftsman miter saw is going to be the weak link in the chain. The first door that I did probably shouldn't have been the interior of the entry door to the master bedroom, because the angles aren't perfect. My brother kept saying "who gives a shit? nobody is going to notice that.", and I showed him the job that somebody did before me in the bathroom which is 10 times as bad, but it's still not perfect and I'm not a master at caulking either so I can only hope that I can do a good caulk job before a second coat of paint and it's not noticible.

I watched another video last night where a guy showed a new way he does it that is pretty amazing. It actually requires zero measuring, and just scribing the stuff to where it needs to fit after you make your top piece and install it. It will require me to use a scrap piece to change the angle slightly from a 45 for the tops of the side pieces, but if it's done right it will be the perfect height from the floor (like mine were), but it will also have a perfect 45 to both ends of the top piece too (which mine weren't).

This method will require a lot more traveling down to the basement from the 2nd floor and back, but if I get it right it will be well worth the extra effort.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Oh, hey... If you're husband's going to do some trim work in the future, he should check out these videos:

1.

2.

NOTES:

VIDEO 1: This one gave me the great idea of using a 1/4" rip of plywood to make your pencil marks for the reveal on the jambs. It's a great little tool to use, and a lot easier than trying to pull out a tape and make your marks.

The guy in the second video did not use anything but his eyes to do this. It's really not all that important because in truth nobody is really going to notice if this is off a bit, but I prefer making these marks, and my point is that I'm taking what I feel is the best from two separate videos made by people that do this professionally.

VIDEO 2: This one brought up a great point that most people try to line everything up perfectly with their marks on the saw and do the cut once. He says that this is going to just be cut off anyhow, so just get close and make your first cut and then cut a few more times until you get right to your mark for the perfect cut.

One thing he did that I didn't like is he installs the top piece of the door flush with the jamb, and only has the reveals on the sides of the doors (he mentions earlier in the video that these are necessary for hinges and the doorknob catch, and that's where he eyeballs them). As perfect as his lengths and 45's are, I don't like the way this looks as much as having the reveal on the top as well. I feel that the reveal adds a layer of depth and makes the entryway look more intricate and by just covering that up on top you're losing a bit of that nice touch.

One of these days I'll try getting my photos up somewhere at a place that doesn't require registering and is also easy to upload and share with. I've got some online albums I share with family and friends, but I really don't want to give those links out. I've even got some good videos of things that I've done all summer long as well as all the stuff that I did with my generator and sump pump up there as well.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Well... Today was productive. It's 9:30 now and I'm just wrapping up.

I got the casings on all of the doors except for the three in the hall that will require some "persuasion". I'm going to have to pull out the table saw in the garage and make some rips for them because there's not enough room before they butt up to the adjoining walls. I'm sure I can make it all look good, but it's going to take some creative measures.

I also re-installed the closet doors. That was much more work than I thought it would be, but now that everything is in place I can take them down and clean them up before I paint them. One of them is badly damaged on the bottom where the peg is supposed to sit, so I'm going to have to rebuild that part as well so the door is as high as the other one.

I was hoping to at least get one of the doors primered today before calling it quits, but I'm worn out and kind of irritated at a few things so I'm just going to finish up for the night. I've got to get a lot more done the next few days so I can do a proper inventory and figure out what I'm going to need for the rest of the work.

I might make a trip there early tomorrow and buy everything else I wanted to get except for the trim. I can always go back later in the week for that when I know how much more I'll need.

Got my shopping list together for the big box store. Going to be dropping at least $160 today on a lot of various stuff, but I'll get about $60 back in rebates.

One of the things I'm buying is a new shop vac that is on sale. The one I "fixed" is acting up again. I think the 3-in-1 oil leaked out and it's grinding now. I'm going to also be buying some grease and see if that fixes it before I open the new one. I still might keep the 2nd one anyhow though since it's half the size of my construction grade beast and it would be easier to move around in my house while doing work.

I'm also going to look for the wood I need to frame the insides of the windows on top of the sills and before the casings go up. I don't know what that part of a window is called, and trying to search for that wood online is futile. Shouldn't cost too much though.

At this end, the car passed smog! I guess there IS truth to the rumor that having your battery die will cause all setpoints to "reset" to factory defaults!

That WAS going to be my "project" car that was going to teach me about car repair (I'm already pretty good at dxing problems) but in reality I already have too many projects and not enuf energy and time. Besides, I've already set my sights on learning a couple of handy skills that complement hubby's instead reproducing them, one of which is sewing, plus just getting the basics of command-line computer maintenance will keep me busy for quite a while! So for auto/small equipment repair and home repair I'm going to be a trusty helper and set my sights on other things.

Wish I could get some things to you in a cost-effective manner, SIX! We just gave away a 16-gal shop vac because it was taking up too much space! But, the shipping would be ridiculous.

No worries.

Bought a $2.99 tub of grease and I'm going to see if I can fix the old 12 gallon vac. I'm not going to bury myself in projects today since it's already 2PM over here, but I think I'm going to work on the vac, start fixing a few of the doors to get them all ready for painting and do all of my rebates. I just found out today that I missed the last 11% sale, and all that trim I bought is still on sale, so I got the price match rebate form and I'm going to get another 11% off the already rediculously low price I paid for it.

I was going to buy 1"x4"x8' lengths of pine that were on sale to rip my window sills but I found 1"x3"x8' furring strips that have rounded edges already. I won't have to rip them like I would the 4" pieces. They're not intended for finish work, but I spent 10 minutes picking out the two best pieces and now I'll just have to sand them down by hand and paint them before I start making my cuts. No ripping or routing required.

I also bought a bunch of 8' lengths of 1/2" by 1 1/2" strips that were on clearance for under two bucks. Those will build the sides of the window and the top of them over the sills and behind the casings. Much better than the $5 per strip of the pine that isn't on sale.

Oh... and I found a countersink drillbit set on clearance for $10 too. So that means I'm going to find the missing pieces to my old set as soon as I open it up.

Oh... and glad you passed the smog test.

That's a little trick I learned years ago. My car today actually doesn't have a problem passing the emissions test, but contrary to popular belief, all you have to do to pass it is unplug the battery for about 15 minutes to reset the computer. Some computers will require a bit of driving and doing things like starting quickly, stopping quickly and an assortment of other scenarios before they remove the "newly reset" flag that will make you fail the test, so on a couple of cars that wouldn't pass the test regularly, I'd just hit the expressway and drive like an idiot for about 15 minutes before going to the testing station and passing. As long as you get there before the check engine light comes back on your golden.

Glad it worked out for you and you didn't get hit by the newly reset flag.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

It will be a very soggy New Years eve where I am but since I will be in there are no worries.

Flipside got quite a bit accomplished today. Got a picture frame that I am putting friends photos into. Also reorganized some books meaning binning them as I have read them and where they were, they were in my way. Some paper recycling done and another box got rid of. Took the wobbly shelf down and now have to see if I can find another shelf for the items that were and are on it. Also vacuuming done.

Now tired.
