THANKS for the weather info, Signy! Though I get 2 different scenarios? One which says the storm will mostly hit NoCal (?)(good! because the Sierras need it!), and one that says it'll stall over SoCal(?).

FWIW I also prefer a painted look, as long as the paint stays hard and doesn't get tacky with weather and/ or time. (But that's true of any wood finish. Literally tacky finishes are a real pain to deal with day to day.)

There's just not too many woods where I like the figure-and-grain, or color, or both ... except on floors. IDK why, it's just a preference.

I'll say that the one exception was the wardrobe I saw in an antique store, where the wood was essentially neutral brown (no red, green, or yellow undertones) light through dark-medium tones of maple syrup, and the grain was more like a subtle set of highlights that glinted differently depending on how the light shone on it, a bit like a 'tiger eye' gemstone.

It's funny. That picture of those tiger eye stones, which BTW is probably my favorite stone, is kind of how my new kitchen hardware looks. That oil rubbed bronze is gorgeous, IMO.

Quote:

As a piece I thought it was beautiful. But I wouldn't want a whole wall of it!

I also did see the grain come through a bit. That's of interest to me because at some point I hope to (carefully) remove some of the drywall and replace it with borate-treated (anti-insect) interior plywood as internal shear panels with one A-face to the inside. If it can be painted to look nice, I won't have to reinstall the drywall there.

Good luck on the bleed-through! I had significant bleed-through on my home's exterior since the wood siding is either cedar or redwood, with lots of natural tannins that came through. And Signy had curry-bleed through when she cleaned and painted the apartment! So we both know what a chore bleed-through can be!

Well... it should be quite a while before I get to actually painting things, so there should be plenty of time for the first batch of doors/shelves with 3 layers of primer to "settle in" and I'll see if anything is still bleeding through. I absolutely refuse to paint on anything that has yellowed because the residual stuff I couldn't get out is still bleeding through. Here's hoping 3 coats did the trick, because people I've shown the things to all think the doors are painted already there's so much primer on them now.

Now I love my hardwood floors. Absolutely love them. Especially upstairs where I refinished them. But years ago I saw some TV show where they had white trim everywhere and then I started noticing that everywhere. I always grew up with houses with wood grain trim, and now that I've got my own I just really want that clean white look.

Once the kitchen is done I've already decided than rather than replacing a perfectly serviceable wood grain vanity in my upstairs bathroom, I'm also going to be painting it and probably carrying over whatever theme I do in the kitchen in the bathroom with it too. I've already bought enough knobs and drawer handles to do two more vanities and replace the stuff on my curio cabinet in the kitchen as well, so even my basement vanity is going to be like this.

I just really love the modern look of painted stuff. As long as it is a good paint job.

And it will be.

I'm not surprised.

I sent my sister a box of N95s on Dec 12. A day later (bc I forgot I had to fill out a customs form) I sent our friend in Toronto HIS box. Well, Xmas comes and Xmas goes and neither has received their package.

Sis got hers towards the end of the first week in January, and friend got his about mid-January. He was so concerned I emailed him the tracking number which showed it left the LA postal terminal Dec 14, but what happened after that.... ?

You know what's fun? Wasting time trying to fix a printer you gave up trying to fix 8 months ago and managed to get by without until tax time.

You know what's even more fun? Thinking that if you have to buy a new cheap printer, you can at least hold on to the old one since it is also a copier and a fax machine, but finding out tonight that the program that controls both the copying and faxing was Adobe Flash and a unilateral decision was made by Big Tech to completely abandon any support for Flash and it's now completely a useless hunk of plastic.

You know what's even more fun than that? Realizing that the absolute cheapest throw away printer on the market today seems to be twice as much as the last one you bought for use maybe twice in a year than the last time you bought one.

Why are printers like the worst product ever made today?

Hmmmmmmmmmm...

Think maybe I'd better snowblow the driveway today...

Didn't look that deep in the front of the house, but my driveway looks packed. The warmer days we were supposed to have seemed to have dropped off, and I'm seeing two more days this week with 1-2" and 2-4" of "heavy" snow.

I was really hoping for one season at least where I wouldn't have to be dragging my heavy snowblower on top of the resurfaced driveway, but having all that weight on it probably isn't any better for it, and if I don't do it I'm probably going to be stuck here for a while.

Wasn't as much as I thought it would be, but that's only because the ground and the sun must have slushed it all up despite the fact it's in the low 20s. It was enough to actually clog up my blower once, which in tall the years I've owned it only ever happened one other time. And that's when I was blowing over 1 foot of snow.

Glad to have that out of the way.

Finished my round of painting for the day before that.

I think I might sand down all of that mouling I took down yesterday around the cabinets. Maybe sand those 5 shelves I stripped 3 days ago now too if I feel like it. I'm sure they're safe to bring back into the house since they stopped having an odor a while back.

JACK! There was a light dusting of snow last night around my local library but then it turned into rain and that got washed away. Little snow and more rain this morning before I went out for my walk.

The rain has dried up now and so we see if there is more rain tonight.

Hopefully I'm going to complete all of the daily/ weekly tasks still on my list today. One of them is preparing a full batch of an experimental recipe. Yeah, I'm going for it without making making small test-batches first. At worst, it'll be unhappy, but still nutritious, freshly-prepared, and edible ... and do the things that food is supposed to do ... keep you alive, and make you not hungry after eating it.

I have to say though, keeping after my Big Guy Mr E is an ongoing daily time drain. He demands a lot of attention! by scratching on my legs (or my face, if I'm sleeping and he wants me to get up and feed him). Which I find hard to ignore. So it breaks my days up quite a bit.

The temp @ my local weather station dropped down to 40F last night, which concurs with my outdoor thermometer. Today is supposed to be clear(ish), but tomorrow night we're supposed to get about 1.5" of rain. One hopes for more! and that Lady Rain is generous. But sadly, there's no more rain predicted over the next 10 days after that. So we will still be many, many inches behind. If you only get about 15" of rain a year, being 6" behind, with the rainy season quickly running out, is really bad. Unless we get enough more rain, to be close to normal, I fear another record-breaking fire season. And it pains me to think of the earth, the plants, and the animals dying from lack of water ... or from being burned up in the fires.

Glad you're not dealing with it. We get that Lake Effect snow around here. Any snow is too much snow, but it could have been way worse than it was. About 6 years ago we got almost two feet of snow in a day and a half.

I remember one winter when I was afraid that if it snowed any more that my snowblower wouldn't be able to blow the snow over the walls of snow that were already there.

Hope you get that rain Kiki. Wish you could have ours.

I haven't done anything after snowblowing and painting. I might not today. It's really getting cold, and I'm feeling a little under the weather. I think it's just been too cold to be sitting my ass on a cold concrete basement floor for hours at a time while doing that painting, and I wasn't feeling very spry after finishing that job.

I'm still going to do it again even though it's only going to be a high of 20 degrees outside, but after that it starts warming up again and shouldn't be so bad. I'm not going to lose any painting days, but I can afford to put off doing other things in between for a few.

Advantage to being on the coast. Vancouver Island gets hammered with snow then tappers off on the Lower Mainland where I am then picks up again heading into the Fraser Valley and further North.

Hmmmm.... I wonder if I caught a cold, or if I've just been subjecting myself to too many fumes recently. Primer today is generally safe, but it's not as if I've been going outside all that much, and I've got something drying 24/7 in the house when I'm not right up on it painting it.

Just feeling a bit run down at the moment. Haven't been sleeping well recently. Hopefully I get a good sleep tonight and don't wake up at the ass crack of dawn like I seem to no matter what time I finally drift off.

Could be too many fumes, and/or not enough sleep.

A couple of nights of good sleep and a couple of days off of exposure should help.

Is there some routine that you can follow to help you get to sleep earlier/faster?

Just for the sake of completeness, I feel compelled to mention carbon monoxide. Is your house especially well-sealed? Have you been using your heater a lot? Anyway, the symptoms are headache, nausea, aches and pains and fatigue, just like a flu.

I should probably put this in the recipe thread, but my experimental potato/ onion/ green bell pepper frittata recipe was delicious! Which doesn't mean I wouldn't make changes. One is - and I can't believe I'm saying this - I'd reduce the amount of potato by a pound and add a pound more of green bell peppers instead. And instead of layering the potatoes on the bottom, followed bite-sized grilled chicken pieces then a mix of the sauteed onion and green bell pepper strips ... I'd mix the potatoes, bell peppers and onions together, topped with the grilled chicken. Then as before pour the immersion blendered egg and ricotta mix in, and top with cheese.

Probably stop watching YouTube and falling into the void every night would help.

But my problem is having to get up to go to the bathroom. I seem to be on a cycle where that's happening after 6AM recently, and if the sun is already up once I wake up, there's no way I'm going back to sleep. Not a problem if I wake up at 2 or 3 AM though.

That's always been a concern of mine. We've actually talked about it in here back before I got into shape again. The heater is ancient and it's running about 50% of the time right now. Unlike the last few winters, I've been indoors nearly all the time.

I have actually been waking up to aches and pains in my feet recently, and I have noticed that while holding doors and shelves during the painting process I have to re-adjust and/or put them down and shake my hand a bit. I've even been clumsily dropping things from time to time again, which actually made me question out loud to myself yesterday if it's MS warning signs. It's been a while since I've had any of those problems.

So it's pain and fatigue. Times where the mucus buildup is pretty heavy. No headaches or nausea. My appetite is fine.

And as for headaches, I rarely have ever gotten them in my life, even when I was hungover. And since I drink a tanker truck of coffee in a year, I think it would have to be pretty bad for me to ever get one.

Sanding took a little longer this time. My brush gummed up a bit yesterday and I made the mistake of not changing it out. Funny how stuff builds up underneath when you're not watching it. Oh well...

Took a little break to get out of the basement before going back down and sitting on the ground for a few hours painting.

Swapped out my stripped test shelf after only two coats. The coverage is great. I only did 2 coats on the first two non-stripped shelves too. I'm saving the 3rd coat on all of them after I fill some holes in with the wood putty. There was some damage to shelves that the doors didn't see, as well as some intentional holes that were made to put hooks in the bottoms, likely to hang some coffee cups or something. I still don't want to bust out that wood putty and risk having it go bad before I'm finished before I have a lot more ready for it.

So I sanded another shelf down to stuff in the mix in the mean time so I don't waste any opportunity to paint. Man they really get clean when you use that old stripping agent. Just going to have to keep tabs on what pieces have what now that I'm changing up the program.

One more day and I'm done priming the second batch.

My bum is cold.

Going to warm up before sanding the rest of those shelves. I've got to do it since I want to break up the rest of the doors and shelves a bit. It takes a lot longer to sand and paint the doors than it does the shelves, so I want to go 3 and 3 from now on. Should have done it from the start because once I run out of doors the shelve days are just going to fly. No sense in doing all the harder stuff up front when drying time is going to slow it right down to the same speed either way.

I'd actually go 2 doors to 4 shelves, but I don't have enough shelves stripped right now for that and I'm afraid I wouldn't get some of them stripped since it's damn cold out right now.

No, I meant the little monitor icon on the bar at the bottom of the screen went for a walk last night. I brought up the page to make sure everything on this lap top that needs to be turned on for the internet was on and it was. It was just the icon disappeared but as you said my internet was working. So anyways I turned my laptop off last night and left it till this morning and the little monitor icon is back. Though this laptop is getting slower in its rebooting sequence.

Have I mentioned that I really, really hate static electricity. Seriously put a plate in the kitchen walked across the carpet to my chair. Sat down and touched this stupid laptop and got zapped.

I so hate static electricity.

Try getting a humidifier. Or at put a pan of water on the stove, set on low. Or drape a wet towel underneath/ in front of your heater registers. Those should humidify the air enough to suppress the static, I hope!

So KIKI been tracking this "atmospheric river" now and again.

The best overall description that I got was that the firehose was originally aimed at norcal, but then it swung south so quickly that SFO central cal didn't get much rain, got as far south as San Luis Obispo where it stalled for a couple of days, leading to as much as 12" of rain and 7' of snow in the Sierras, b4 swinging north again. Still predicted to head back south, I'm predicted to get almost 2" rain starting this evening and thru Friday, you're predicted to get about 2.5" last I checked.

Better boogie off to do grocery shopping before it rains.
Ta ta!

I love reading about different behaviors surrounding weather patterns in different areas.

If we only went shopping for stuff when it wasn't raining around here, we'd be stuck in our houses all spring.

The five stripped shelves are sanded bare and should be the easiest things to paint yet. Also got to sand down two of the crown molding pieces, but calling it quits for the night.

Got a lot of paper work to do tomorrow since it's that time of year again. Probably won't get anything done outside of my regular paint shift.

I know I'm obsessed with rain. Just wanted to tell KIKI that I looked at the radar, and it looks like ALL of CA is getting rain, with the heaviest right around Fresno. Also, this storm front will bring much-needed rain and snow to the eastern Sierras, Utah, and Arizona. Yipee!!!

I read about your progress and sigh, SIX. I'm dipping back into aches, pain, and fatigue and this time I don't know why.

So I've just been doing day-today stuff ... keeping up more or less wtih cooking, shopping, cleaning etc. Went with hubby to his doctor's appt, had a telemed myself, so that took up a bunch of time, too. Also helped hubby glue up more of the bedframe.

Since rain is preventing me from much-needed yardwork, I suppose I should turn my attention indoors. Just trying to get up the steam to do it.

I hope I'm not making you feel like you're not getting stuff accomplished.

I just talked to my bud who's been tracking my progress on an album I have and although he knows better than to give me too much shit about being a perfectionist and working at my own pace, he clearly thinks I'm insane.

He might be right... At the rate this job is going, I might very well be doing my living out of cardboard boxes clogging up my livingroom floor for the next two months.

I've been getting the aches and pains too... Possibly due to prolonged carbon monoxide exposure, being cooped up in my house nearly 24/7 while that heat is going on 50% of the time.

Today when I woke up, I actually had a "sensation" I haven't woke up with a long time now, and that was a little "clicking" going on when I balled up my left fist, that went away after I did it a few times. That's the hand I'm using to hold the doors during the first part of the painting that has been hurting more every day I do it.

I finally got some extra sleep today and managed to grab a few extra hours nap. Late start to my day for sure, but it's a paint only shift today with no scuff sanding, and I've got 10 more pieces ready to go tomorrow when I start a new 6 piece shift. If I get only two more pieces stripped and sanded in the next 6 days, I'll have enough for the 6 days after that too.

Got most of my tax stuff done. I just have to print it out and fill out the things I don't want to fill out on my computer by hand and sign them. Shouldn't be long before I get those returns, since I live in Indiana. My brother had to wait until September of last year to finally get his Illinois return because Illinois.

Don't beat yourself up if you're in pain. There's a lot to say about just keeping up with the mess of three people. Try to get just a little more than that done each day just to keep in the right mind frame and at some point a spark will light and you'll have a really good day.

That's what I've been doing with these painting shifts. I've only had a few days where the only thing I got done was the painting, but I usually went back to do something else at some point, and even on days like yesterday where I didn't really think I'd get anything else done I ended up doing work until almost 10PM and surprised myself again.

Good luck.

Oh... and I thought I'd offer a little update on my thoughts on Dollar Store materials.

Paint Brushes: Possibly the best deal of all for DIY stuff. If it weren't for the stray bristle that fell out, I'd say the single brushes they sell would be fine for using for finishing work on a lot of projects (In fact, I DID use them late spring for painting the oil based rustoleum on my outside windows after re-caulking them). They clean up good, at least for a dozen or so cycles no problem and if you're using Oil based stuff you don't have to feel bad about just throwing them away when the job is done. After a use or two they stop "shedding" any bristles, but they don't clean up brand new like a Purdy brush will. Great for priming and throw away stuff though.

They also have 2 to 3 packs on occasion with different brush sizes. I don't find much use for brushes outside of the standard size brush, but when you know you're throwing it away immediately after using it for things like putting stripping gunk on stuff, these are great too.

Sanding Sponges: Still worth the money. However, their value may be decreased when I noticed the ad for the local big box store has 3 packs of 3M sanding sponges on sale for $5.49. I'm sure at that price you're getting a far better deal from longevity.

Oh... and a little tip about sanding sponges. Once you've used them up and they don't sand wood or mud very good anymore, have one by your sink. They're GREAT for cleaning up any paint you get on your hands while working. Don't try this trick with a new sponge or you'll rip your skin right off, but once it's somewhere between well worn and so worn it's falling apart, it's the sweet spot for this repurposing. Throw it out before bits start falling off though because you don't want that going down your drain.

Large wire brushes: Good value, as long as they come with the little scraper on the end of them, otherwise I'd pass (You don't know how valuable that little scraper bit is until you realize your brush doesn't have one). They won't hold up as long as one you get at the big box store, but who cares? It's disposable and it will get the job done.

Small multi-pack of "detailing" wire brushes: HARD PASS. These things are garbage. You'll have as much luck trying to scrape stuff off with a soft bristled toothbrush.

Sand Paper: I've totally changed my mind on these. At my store they come in 40 packs of various grits. Absolute trash. My mind was already greatly changed when using them on the palm sander, but last night I was trying to strip the molding by hand and killing my fingers doing it. I decided to try the HEAVILY used piece of 3M 80 grit I'd swapped out for a new one while sanding the shelves and I was able to do the work 5 times as fast with a heavily used piece of paper than the three pieces of dollar store 80 grit crap I ripped through and did a crappy job with. Even the well worn parts of the 3M paper did more than a brand new sheet in the dollar store packs, and by positioning my fingers so I was using the not-worn ends that feed up into the clamps I was able to just rip right through that old poly and stain. DO NOT BUY.

Other various things that can come in handy: Torpedo Levels, Tape measurers, garage hooks.

The garage hooks are fantastic and a great way to get things organized on your walls and off the floor. I'm sure you can buy more expensive hooks (these come in 5 packs for a buck), but unless you're trying to put some serious weight up there these are great. It's easy enough to put two of them up together to hang things like my broadcast spreader to protect the inflatable tires, and my double wide halogen lamps.

The torpedo levels and tape measures probably aren't going to survive very long if you're clumsy with them, but for a buck I think the quality is pretty reasonable. If you're anything like me, you've got tools both in your garage/shop and in the house and sometimes these things "travel" back and forth and don't always go where they're supposed to be. Nice having backup on things like these in a pinch, especially when you've got six inches of snow out there between you and your 5 good tapes you left in your garage over time.

Rain update: just looking out the window at my "rain gauge" looked like we got about 2" of rain, not the 1.25" predicted. Still have the rain gauge out bc more expected.

GREAT!

My area - not so much. There was ~1.5" predicted, a bit over a half inch in my cachepot rain gauge, and ~1" at the Santa Fe Dam. So you flatlanders once again got more than the foothills.

STILL! I'm glad it wasn't a total bust and you and probably others got so much more!

Dry today on my walk but weather people are calling for more rain. Either tonight or tomorrow.

It sure felt like Saturday when I was out for my walk. No work for me as I had to call my boss last night to find out.

Real life got in the way of work today. Didn't manage to get my regular painting shift done until nearly 5PM. Hopefully it's ready for me to sand so I can get the next batch going in the morning. Might have to start later than usual though.

Looking at DWP rainfall gages over 2 days, the foothills/mountains at the far eastern end of LA County got about 2" ...

Tanbark 2.25
Cogswell 2.95
Puddingstone Diversion Dam 1.81
Big D Dam 2.05
Walnut Creek 2.04
Mount Olive HS 2.05

Curiously some areas to the west also got a lot of rain
Ballona Creek (the original outflow of the LA River before a giant flood caused the river to cut an entirely new outlet to the south instead of to the west) 2.47
Sand Canyon 2.27

My measurement was 1 7/8 (about 1.9"). Since I'm always higher than the nearest LA DWP station, I still wonder about the placement of my rain gage, altho I don't see anything wrong.

Season totals across LA County flatlands range between 3-4" .... pitiful, for this time of year.
