Stuck with it after a late start and got all of the stripped stuff sanded and ready to go. Those Lazy Susan discs turned out better than I ever imagined they would and should take the paint no problem.

Both of the cabinets I stripped last night look so much better now that they've dried out completely and I don't think I'll have any issues sanding them either.

One more cab to strip, hopefully tomorrow, then I have to start hanging some plastic so I can start sanding. I can't wait to see what this stuff looks like when it's nice and clean white.

Over at this end, I managed to start re- shaping the part of the front yard that's most troublesome. Just moving dirt around from one place to another, digging out pathways that will be filled with mulch, filling in the trench that we left digging out that pipe, and raising the planting areas. I'll probably need a couple yards of dirt and a couple yards of chipped bark mulch and once it's shaped like what I want I can finish up with the planting and weeding.

But I'm going to get in touch with my doctor. Maybe they can figure out why I'm in so much pain.

I did stuff today but I'll be dipped if I can remember most of it. It was just everyday stuff one does.

I've been trying to get the Big Guy to nibble up laxatone - I think he's a got a large hairball in his tummy again, and I hope to fix that. It doesn't help that he dislikes it so much, so I have to find new ways to disguise it until he figures it out, and I then I have to try something different.

And I also ran some errands: got the rest of the ingredients I need to make minestrone soup and pre-prepped most of the vegetables, stocked up on TSP at Lowe's and bought some cheap everyday handtools (the kind you intentionally misuse, like the slotted screwdriver you use to pry small things with, or the slip-joint curved pliers you use to take off bottle caps or crack nuts or also remove nuts when you can't be bothered to get a wrench) and stopped at ACE to get some supplies I ordered.

I too have been having aches and pains, but not like Signy's I think. Just in the usual places, like when I stand and chop vegetables or wash dishes for more than a couple of minutes my back hurts so I have to give it many rests.

Overall it was a productive day even if it was scattered over many different things.

But no... mine is probably low level carbon monoxide exposure from being stuck in the house all damn day and night with a furnace that's 20 years older than I am.

Sounds like you're both making progress. I hope your doctor can help out with the pain issue Sigs. It sounded so promising after the nasal infection cleared up.

BTW... Is the PM function here broke, or is it just me?

That is true but all this rain in the low lands means massive snow dumps in the mountains which is why Environment Canada has issued avalanche alerts for all coastal mountains. Even the ones that are close to Vancouver. North Shore rescue has been kept busy by stupid people going out of bounds on ski trails or just hiking trails.

Rainy day again today.

Had to go somewhere on a bus and to get back to the area where I live now, I took one that went a different route. This little bus took me through an area that I lived in when I was around 3years old. It went passed a building that I am sorry to see that is slated for demolition and rezoned. So probably going to put up an apartment building or something. Anyways this building used to be used by a small family run grocery store and the other side was a butcher shop. The building is just big enough for two small shops.

Anyways my family used to shop in both of these places and there was also a bus stop out front. Bus stop is long gone now and it'll be sad to see this torn down and rebuilt.

Yeah. It's weird going back to places you grew up if you didn't stay there while it was changing. Except for a few big chains like McDonalds that are still around, I can hardly recognize most of the places.

Big chill setting in tonight. Forecast got even worse with 4 out of the next 5 days of snow, and every night until V-Day expected to be below zero.

Gross.

I might actually have to do something other than paint until then. It might be too cold to even paint in the basement for the next 10 days. After today the entire beginning and middle of February is expected to be far below the normal highs and lows for this time of year.

I've been through the area before and everything looked the same then though that was last year, maybe during the summer. Yeah, we moved from this city out to a place called Maple Ridge which is just at the start of the Fraser Valley. I haven't been there in ages and I am sure it has changed massively.

A little. My dad was still working then and I learned to sort of tell time or more likely just learned that when the clock hit 4pm, my dad would get home. I would be waiting for him at the door.

I seem to remember trying to balance a ball on my tummy, before I was even walking. But he ball was round, and my tummy was round, so the ball kept rolling off.

But then, that might have been a memory of a memory, because there was a picture of that in our photo album, and peple probably showed it to me and talked to me about it.

I remember playing "choo choo train" in the roll-out pan drawer that was under our mom's oven, but there was a picture of that in the photo album, too.

I very clearly remember the first time I was stung by a bee, before I even knew what "bees" were, because I was trying to catch the pretty fly for mom. I remember her having us sit in the floor and roll balls to each other, before would could really throw and catch, to help us develop coordination. (She was a pediattric nurse b4 she became a general ward nurse and applied some of those skills to us.)

I remember when we used to play "hide and seek" we would think it was so very clever to hide in the toy box. And when dad came home from work, we would hide under their bed while he rumbled and grumbled taking his shoes off, and we would pretend that "the giant was home". And when mom used to take us to the drugstore and buy us a grilled cheese sandwhich. I took SOOOO long to eat she said "You know, in school you'll only get 30 minutes to eat, you won't get to finish your lunch unless you hurry up" so I learned to eat "like a fireman".

Learning how to pronounce "SH" and CH". (I always used to call it "egg in a cell" before that).

I have VERY clear memories of kindergarten, painting, taking reading comprehension test, and our teacher who we used to call "Mrs Pain in the neck" in whispers. She was old and strict.

I remember preschool very well. Somehow I benefited from a private preschool and had three teachers. There were probably 25 kids in there, and it was a building used just for that. I specifically remember for some reason thinking it was really cool that I figured out how to flex my calf muscle while we were sitting "Indian Style" (yes... that's what all the teachers called it back then), and showing one of the teachers, who then called another teacher over so I could show her.

Then the divorce happened and it was on to a life of learn-nothing public schools and being carted around between 3 and 4 houses depending on the day and the week until I was deemed old enough to wear the front door key on my neck and babysit my brothers everyday after school for me. No more money for private school after the lawyers took their share and the rest went to a 5 pack a day cigarette habit and a brand new car every other year. I have a lot of memories from back then. Most of them make me feel bad to even think about them...

I do remember a few Christmas parties on my mom's side of the family before the divorce. One year I got a Superman onesie set of PJ's, and the next year (for some strange reason) somebody got me Dallas Cowboys PJs. My Uncle hated the Cowboys and made like he was fake angry that I was wearing them and all night long he'd do one of these "I'm gonna getcha" wrestling poses if I walked past him. Later that night, I remember "goosing" my aunt, which brought a ton of laughs from everyone, so of course I did it again and then I got in trouble for it (with no explanation why of course). My grandpa had a full set of Santa clothes and would come down from upstairs to hand out the presents. I remember knowing that there was no chimney on the house and asking how Santa got inside and was told it was because magic. I only had a few toddler cousins at that point. Ended up with over 20 of them.

I've mentioned before my grandpa taught me a lot at home. We had this owl clock toy that had a analog clock on his belly and when you pressed a button his eyes would open up and tell you the "digital" time. To this day I still don't wear digital watches because my grandpa said that they were for stupid people.

Look at that... I found it. Brings back memories seeing that picture.

Before I even started preschool I was able to read children's books. Bedtime stories were a favorite part of my day and I vividly remember both my mom and my dad in there a lot reading them to me, and me trying to learn how to read... at one point just remembering stories so well that I would retell the story from page to page without still even knowing how to actually read the words. I also remember being fascinated by books my dad would bring home from the library that had pictures in them, especially those about space.

I remember sleeping in a crib and stretching one morning - or trying to - and my hands bumping on the top and my feet bumping on the bottom because I was too tall for a crib (but still sleeping in one because money was tight). And I remember learning how to climb out of it.

I remember going to bed Christmas eve and getting up VERY early Christmas day when it was still dark, and there being a tree with beautiful lights and presents underneath.

I remember having such good eyesight that when I watched dust in the sunlight, I could see rainbows from some of it.

By the time I got to kindergarten despite being 2 months underage, I could already read, count, and do simple arithmetic, and I thought all the tests were fun, like a game.

I remember the first time I met a great aunt. She was my mom's aunt and visiting from the US a while after my brother was born. I remember him laying on a bed and being fussed over by her and my mom.

There is 3 years difference between me and my brother so, I was just a few months over 3years old that time.

When my dad got home from work, he took off his coat, hat then picked me up carrying me into the kitchen. He would set me down on a chair and open his lunch pail for me. He would pull out his thermos to clean it out and I would get my treat. Half a bologna sandwich.

I do remember having a cool teddy bear lamp in my room that doubled as a night light, but I was still in a bed at that point.

I remember watching The Thing with my Dad shortly after the divorce. Somehow that one didn't give me nightmares. It was watching Aliens with my mom that was the first movie that got in my head. I remember my mom giving me a belly rub one day because I was terrified I had an alien in my belly that was going to burst out after watching it.

Speaking of eyesight, I think I ruined it when I was little. Somehow I figured out that if you press hard on your eyes when they're closed you'd get some cool spots and color effects happening when you opened your eyes. I don't have memories of doing that very often, but I did have glasses by the time I was in 2nd grade.

That's cute that you'd wait for your dad to come home from work Brenda.

My old man worked the night shift, and I have vague recollections of being really happy when he'd come home in the morning, but then he'd go right to bed after getting something to eat.

It is soooooo cold right now. I think I'm going to bump up the heat in my house to an unprecedented 67 degrees on the 2nd floor thermostat for the next few weeks. 65 just ain't cutting it, and the days of living uncomfortably just to save $30 a month are over. 65 on the 2nd floor means high 50's to 60 on the 1st floor and maybe 50 degrees in the basement (where I sit on the cold floor and paint everyday).

I'd celebrate a more favorable looking weather forecast today, but they've been changing it drastically every day and you really have no idea what a day will bring until it's here. Although we still show 3 or 4 nights still dipping in the negatives over the next 10 days, they just barely do, and half the highs are in the high teens. That's so much better than what I was looking at yesterday.

I'm going to finish my last prime coat on the last side of the 3rd batch of doors/shelves I need to paint.

I'm getting super bored of doing this at this point, so at least I get to switch it up a bit and throw in some of the lazy susan discs for a different painting experience tomorrow. And I'll only be doing 2 doors in the next shift. Once shift 4 is done, the only door I have left to do is the damaged one that I still need to fix.

I hope to find the desire to strip that last upper cabinet to the left of the sink today. It would be really cool to get that all sanded down this weekend and get a coat of primer on all of it.

I'm also going to take down the range hood and an "aftermarket" shelf put in to house a microwave under the cabinets. Both were installed so amateurishly that they're not going to make it in my final product as-is. I will be re-using both of them, but I've got some figuring and constructing to do first.

The range hood just needs to be installed better and can stay where it is otherwise. But the microwave nook wasn't even installed level. It's higher on the right side than it is on the left. Not by too much, and you probably wouldn't notice it with the naked eye if there weren't 4"x4" tiles right behind it giving you a nice grid to judge the horrible work Uncle Bob did.

I haven't measured it yet, but I really do hope that there is actually extra space on the left side and that it's not uneven because of the cabinets being out of level. I can easily shorten the left side to bring them to the same height, but if that makes the space smaller on the left it might not fit a microwave.

My microwave I have currently won't be making it back up there regardless. My brother gave it to me to replace one that fit very nicely in the nook but had dents at the top that left it wide open to the world when it was closed and microwaving (had to warn my dad not to stand by it one day when he was warming up a cup of coffee). This new one I have is the same height, but it's about 2 inches too deep and hangs off the front of the nook.

I've never bought a new microwave in my life, and I've probably had 8 of them. I might actually finally have to bite the bullet on that one when this work is done because I don't have a ton of countertop space and it's nice not having a microwave on the countertop. At least I'll get another cool set of high powered donut magnets if I have to get rid of this one. I'd also get a 2nd transformer to go with the one I've already got out in the garage to make my own welder.

It is a good memory.

Don't think my dad every worked the night shift or not after he got married. Maybe before.

I was told this story many times by my mum and a friend of hers. When my dad would go to get his shoes on to go to work in the morning he always had to go looking for his shoe laces.

It seems that I would pull the shoe laces out of them and then hide them under the couch. So my mum would hear him grumbling about his baby daughter doing this too him in a good natured way.

. My dad was a tall man and to have to get down on his hands and knees then stretch under the couch to get the laces out was a big pain.

My parents and my mum's friend figured I didn't want my dad to go to work.

I was told this story many times by my mum and a friend of hers. When my dad would go to get his shoes on to go to work in the morning he always had to go looking for his shoe laces.

It seems that I would pull the shoe laces out of them and then hide them under the couch. So my mum would hear him grumbling about his baby daughter doing this too him in a good natured way. . My dad was a tall man and to have to get down on his hands and knees then stretch under the couch to get the laces out was a big pain.

My parents and my mum's friend figured I didn't want my dad to go to work.

I THINK I got enough petromalt/ laxatone in the Big Guy's tummy because it SEEMS like he's eating dry kibble again and keeping it down, and not regurgitating it immediately because there's a hairball filling his stomach and blocking the food from going in and down.

But I have to wait and see for a while, because he's also not eating that much either.

Thanks. He's had hairball and other digestive problems from the time he was so tiny he could fit on half my hand with room left over. He's semi-long haired, with an extremely dense coat. If I could brush him it would help the hairballs, but he won't stand for it. So this year, once the weather warms up, I'm going to have him shaved down to see if it helps. And try to knock down that particular one of his problems with what I hope will be a reliable routine.

Pulled down the range hood and the microwave nook. No real surprises under there other than the microwave nook actually seemed to be built somewhat competently. It shouldn't be a problem to clean it up a bit and get it back in there after making an adjustment or two. I've got my eye on a microwave that will fit the 12" depth properly as well as not be any worry about clearance for height. It occurred to me that I will be losing around 5/16" height clearance when I use my corner trim to give the illusion that the cabinets were installed level, so along with the 1/8" of an inch I was going to lose on the left side to make it level with the tiles I was worried. But the microwave I'm looking at only needs 10.8" clearance and will make it in there with ease.

Got the last upper cabinet to the left of my sink stripped today as well as underneath the high cabinets over the stove and microwave. I'm not paining under all of the cabinets, but those two would be super noticeable if I left them as-is.

I'm halfway through the process of building new supports for the range hood that aren't going to require the huge screws popping 1/4" through the bottom of the cabinets (idiots).

I finally got to use my new cordless brad nailer and I fell in love with it. It might just be my new favorite tool. It's amazing! You wouldn't believe how nice it is to just pop in a battery and a magazine of nails and go to town with it instead of having to lug in a 70lb compressor from the garage and have a 50 foot hose attached to the end of it. (Not to mention not having to listen to that thing constantly go off and needing to support it on all sides so it doesn't crawl halfway across my hardwood floors from the vibrations)

Learned something new about the cabinets today too. These things have been re-dressed several times over the years it seems. Underneath, to the left of the range hood I decided to remove the veneer they put on the front of the lip under the bottom shelf because it was bubbling up and wouldn't have looked good painted. Underneath that was a white-ish color. When I stripped it, I discovered that under the white-ish paint was Baby Blue!

So either these cabinets were baby blue when the house was first built, or that was the first of at least 3 times somebody "improved" these cabinets.

It looks like they did a half-ass amateurish job every time, at least from what I've exposed.

Somebody is finally here to do it right.

Spent a few hours doing some other prep work tonight, but going to call it quits now. I pulled a few screws out of the backs of the cabinets so I could properly countersink the holes and get the screws deep enough to hide them in two of the cabs. Then I pulled apart the microwave nook at the top where they'd done a bad job with screws and missed brad nails and glued and nailed it proper and I'll let it dry before I sand the thing down and prime it.

I also did a little scuff test inside one of the cabinets and it should sand great. I think I might go buy a cordless sander with a bag that will work with my existing batteries though. I'm going to make a mess no matter what I do, but maybe that thing will help me keep it down to a minimum.

Decided to move on to the 4th batch of things needed to be primed even though it looks like the bottom doors are suffering from quite a bit more bleedthrough. They were filthy compared to the top ones, especially in the nooks and crannies where the dreaded patina built up.

I'm putting them in a different wrapped up pile for now... The same pile I put the shelves that have only gotten two coats because they need some wood putty treatment before I finish them. I think at this point it just might need a little time to cure before they get covered again, and had there been more time before the initial coats 3 probably would have done the trick.

The glued microwave nook is dry and ready to work on. I think I'm going to focus on getting that ready for paint today, as well as clean the tiles behind the stove and dishwasher with TSP and bleach and see if I can't bring them back to their former glory.

Then I'll just do some more general cleanup and reorganization since I need to get some plastic up to protect the stove and sink and to block off the kitchen from the rest of the house before sanding commences. I will probably put off all my shopping until tomorrow and pick up that cordless palm sander for the cabinets then.

If you're using a latex (water-based) primer, I hate to say this but ... if staining is coming through it's probably water-soluble ... AND you might end up having to strip off the latex and go with an oil-based primer instead to block the bleed-through ... and the reason to remove the latex is because ... you can eventually paint latex over oil, but not oil over latex.

Getting back to the milk paint, one can add tung oil to it, and make it more like an oil-based paint.

FWIW I've used water-based Kilz on the exterior of my home, but the bleed-though of tannins which are water-soluble from the cedar/ redwood siding was considerable, requiring many coats. I asked at Lowe's in case I ever need to readdress the problem. Here, you can't find oil-based Kilz because of the organic-solvent air pollution it causes. I don't know what you might find there. But the people at Lowe's recommended Zinsser as THE superior brand to try, and they do have oil-based products. (Shellac which is alcohol-based doesn't count as oil-based even though it's not water. It looks like they have 3 different basic formulations: water-based (latex), alcohol-based (shellac), and oil-based.)

Some exterior products have mold-retardant, which may vaporize and cause toxic fumes exposure over time. To be on the safe side, use interior products only; unless you're going to get down with SDSs (safety data sheets - used to be called MSDSs material safety data sheets, and some may still be listed that way and come up on a search under that term).

I'm kind of stuck with it now. If I had to strip these things down it would be so much work I might as well just buy new doors.

I'm using the Zinnsear Bullseye 123, which is supposed to block stains.

I just bought a gallon of the 123 Plus on sale today which is supposed to be even better. I'm going to use that new gallon on the cabinets and on any of the doors that have any bleedthrough.

There's not much, but a few of the bottom doors just have a few trouble spots, almost exclusively on the insides of the doors.

I'm also going to be using the same high quality enamel paint I used on all of the baseboards and door/window trim, and it's getting 2 coats of that. Hopefully 6 or 7 coats will finally lock it in.

Cool. The big box store sold individual 4.25"x4.25" tiles per piece. I only needed 2 of them. For at least 10 years now, there has been a big hole in the kitchen wall with two broken tiles that once was where the home phone was hung. Unfortunately, it was just a hole when I moved in and the phone wire fell down in the wall many years ago, and I don't feel like beating down any walls to try and find it. It would be a much easier fix to have just put a new phone receptical there, but since I don't have a wire I'm not going to just put a fake one up, so I knocked out the two bad tiles today and brought a chunk to match the color and got me two new tiles for what it would cost to play a game of Pac-Man at the arcade.

I couldn't bring myself to pay full price for the mortar and grout for just two tiles though. I'm going to see if any of my neighbors have any laying around, or worst case take a long drive out to my friends to pick some up since I know he has some.

I didn't get the sander though. There was a great online deal for a combo of the sander I wanted with a finish sander, but you could only order it online and have it either shipped to your house or to the store. So I have to wait a few days on it now.

Other than that, I just cleaned up the horrible grease and other crap behind the range hood. Doesn't really matter since it will be covered up again, but you know I wasn't going to let that stay up there.

Not sure if I'm doing anything else today or not. I was up really late working last night. Maybe I'll take it easy for the rest of the day.

I know you didn't get the sander, but IMHO if it has its onw bag that REALLY saves on cleanup. No, it doesn't trap everything, but it turns a potentially big cleanup job into a little one.

BTW, I didn't get to respond to everyone's early childhood memories, but I appreciated that you posted them and enjoyed reading about them. I was an introverted child in a benign environment, and most of my early memories are good ones. I'm sure that not everyone can say that.

Been too busy over the past few days to post much, but hubby finally recovered from pneumonia to finish dear daughter's bed, so we helped glue felt on the feet, and drwaer liner between the frame and plywood platform (to prevent squeaking) and helped put on the plywood. With my various aches and pains I couldn't help with the heavy lifting, but I cleaned and waxed the frame (dear daughter didn't want a tung oil finish, but the beeswax/carnauba wax finish didn't smell too bad and did an excellent job of cleaning the the frame and sealing it against humidity changes).

Also, our cable provider recently gave us an upgrade to our modem and router, but the router broadcasts simultaneously on 2.4 and 5 GHz, and there's no way to get the connected devices to select which one to connect with, so the devices keep switching to find the strongest signal, which causes disconnect. We have to manually reconnect the tablet which interferes with dd's virtual gym class. So hubby bought a Motorola router wth a strong 2.4 Ghz signal, but (even better) it ID's each signal separately and allows us to connect the devices to the 2.4 GHz signal specifically. It didn't require much more than plugging it in, but I went around the house with my phone and the tablet to makre sure it was getting good signal everywhere, and that the devices weren't hunting for a higher signal. All is good.

Tomorrow, I return our DVR from our canceled cable TV service and the cable-provided router, and that should put a close on that issue.

And maybe now some much-delayed yardwork. I showed hubby the trimming that I think the avocado tree needs and he's OK with it. Also, after the rain came the sun, and the weeds have exploded, and the longer I'm delayed attending to that the worse it's gonna get.
