I got all mine pretty early this year, but I'd already filed before any of them got mailed. You can get most of that stuff online these days. Mine were out the door nearly two weeks before they even officially start accepting them.

Good luck. I know how much it sucks to do that paperwork.

Wait... So you still have no sound?

Is the spot you're plugged into on the front or back?

If there is only one input that the speakers fit into, they should be working right now. You don't need to buy a special sub woofer to get it to work (I thought you just wanted one for better sound quality).

Is there only one spot that thing fits into? If there are multiple spots, are they color coded (like pastel pink, green and blue)?

I'm starting to think the problem might still be that the sound and motherboard drivers aren't installed. Not a huge problem, but something I may have to work with you on.

It would be great if there was a product number on the back of the case (not the Serial Number, but a Product Number. I could likely easily track down the installation disk image for you if you had that. But that would only be possible if it were a pre-built computer like a Dell, Gateway, e-Machines, Hewlett Packard type deal, and not something somebody built on their own.

If you can get a product number from a sticker on the back of your case for me, I'll see what I can do about getting you the driver for your motherboard or at least your soundcard. You shouldn't go buy anything else until we can at least know that your computer is putting out sound at all.

If you can't find a product number, please download this program when you get a chance and I'll ask you what I need after you can run it. We'll be able to get your sound card model with it for sure, and might even be able to get the motherboard info I'd need to try to find the right drivers for everything.

https://www.techspot.com/downloads/160-sisoftware-sandra-lite.html

I trust techspot and I trust the creators of that program. I've been using it for years. I'm currently downloading this version to install it so I can look at my computer on my end when walking you through what you need to do.

(Oh, and if you can't find the product number and install the program, make sure not to enable network access when installing it. By default it is not enabled, so you don't need to do anything. Though it would be easier if I were to remotely do what needed to be done on your computer, I would never do that for anybody since I don't want to promote bad behavior for anyone. Lot's of scammers out there LOVE to get remote access to people's computer and unwittingly do things on them. Don't ever let somebody get remote access to your computer).

Quote:

I have to get something that actually sits over my ears. I tried ear buds but because of the way my ears are they hurt me.

You don't need earbuds. In fact, it's even cheaper if you don't get earbuds.

This one at WalMart is only around $35, and even has a microphone you can attach/detach if you ever get into communicating with people over the computer.

I'm not saying that you should specifically buy those ones. I'd never buy a pair without looking at reviews to make sure that it will last a while, it's comfortable on your head and doesn't slip off easily.

But there are options, and it's great not being tethered to the computer anymore.

They are plugged into the front and in the right colour coded spot. A nasty sort of green colour on the case and the speakers.

I would have to look at the back again and see if there are any other spots.

This computer is both ACER, monitor and case. I got it from someone who owns their own company and does computer work for offices and such for a living. He just likes to help out people that he knows.

I am going to do some checking while I am out today.

Got sound now on desktop. Forgot after so long that I had to go to the control panel and actually turn on the sound. That is what happens when I was so used to a laptop. Also bought a cheap headphones. So all is good.

Good to hear.

At least I was able to verify that the program I said you'd need to download if you couldn't get the product number will tell you exactly what motherboard you have in your computer.

Don't usually have too much use for in-depth info like that, but when I need it, it's all there.

Glad it was a simple fix. I remember trying to hunt down outdated mobo drivers for a computer my dad got 2nd hand years ago and it wasn't easy tracking them down. They've gotten a lot better about having archives for that stuff these days though so I don't think it would have been too difficult if we needed to do it.

Well, that effing not-so-heavenly bamboo is ALMOST gone.

After digging under the plant and lopping off as many roots as I could reach, I thought to try and divide the above-ground plant, so I got a 3' prybar and pried apart as much as I could. But then, I came to an oval burl that was about 1' long and about 4-5" thick. It was like a solid piece of wood, and there was no other option but the reciprocating saw. I'm down to about a half- dozen roots to dig free/lop off, but the sun was going down. I got a workout tho!

3 straight days of pure, dark, grey skies and lower than predicted temps, rounded out tomorrow with up to an inch of rain.

:(

Haven't got much done here since I came back from the visit with my bro. I need to get motivated. Hopefully it is sunny and 50 this weekend like predicted.

Yesterday while walking out to my porch I heard a faint high pitched noise over the TV and thought "I don't have tinnitus. Why am I hearing tinnitus?". After turning off the TV and walking back to the stairs I could clearly hear that it was coming from the basement. Only two things down there that could be doing it, and neither are good news. It was either the water heater or the sump pump. And one of the sump pumps that failed before was humming before it went, so if I had to replace the thing it would be better to do it now than wait until it's an emergency and I'm swimming in freezing cold water again.

It was the water heater. I "fixed" it, although I'm not feeling very good about the process. I've never heard that sometimes all you need to do with a water heater is reset it like a cable modem.

I turned the gas off and immediately the hum went away. I used the pilot to turn it back on rather quickly and everything seems fine now.

Finger's crossed.

Had that happen to us once in a while. The whine might have been a weak solenoid. We had to reset occasionally but it kept on working until the heater itself developed a leak, many many years later. I hope your experience will be as good as ours was.

Walking the dog yesterday I saw a tree trimming company doing a FANTASTIC job on a neighbor's eucalyptus trees.

The trimmers around here are usually a bunch of know-nothing tree butchers, cutting off everything down to thick bare stumps, but these guys were doing sensitive pruning: Only cutting back to branches about as thick as my wrist and leaving about 50pct canopy.

Knowing that the avocados were in serious need of pruning and that this is the best time to do it, I got their contact info, a quote, and hired them (with hubby's OK, of course).

They're doing a FANTASTIC job here, too: enough, but not too much. They tip-pruned the tallest leaders, cut the avocado away from the poor sunlight-starved pine, and are cutting branches away from the main communication lines that run thru our backyards. (SCE takes care of the power lines.)

So, yay! Another thing crossed off the list!

Thanks for letting me know. I feel somewhat better about it. I think it's one of those things that if it just keeps working and doesn't start humming again for a week or two I'll forget about it until it's a problem again.

It was miserable outside today, but I did manage to get out and fill another two trash cans to the brim with wood chips for pickup tomorrow. I was able to really rake out a lot of them off the top and keep a majority of the dirt on the ground. It looks a million times better than it did when I woke up this morning. Nice, proper, rounded out mound that isn't full of jagged edges and peaks and vallys anymore.

I think I'll wait for the weekend to do the next round so it's nice and dry and sunny and 60 degrees.

You're working your ass off to improve your house, and given the major problems that you've had with water intrusion and settling (IMHO all of the other problems are relatively minor, but their cumulative effect has been traumatic) I can imagine that any new problem, no matter how small, feels like a major event moving you farther and farther from completion. Like you're trying to scrabble up a slope that keeps sliding down underneath you.

I think it's time that you took a look around at all of the progress that you've made. Also, try to regain a sense of proportion. Not every problem is a disaster. Save your stress for the truly important, take a deep breath, and try to relax. Do something different.

I know it's difficult if you're a little obsessive and a perfectionist, but houses will never be perfect, no matter how hard you try.

I appreciate the pep talk.

I'm starting to feel like I'm finally getting things under control. I'm just hoping that spring is kind to us this year.

I'd like a little rain at some point to test how things are working out. But hopefully we don't get another 55+ inches this spring. (So far, so good... even with that 3 week sub-freezing with 40 inches of snow BS we went through, we've only had about 3 inches of rain since, and by this time last year we were already well on our way to 20 inches).

There's just so much catch up work that needs to be done. A lot of lost years there that I'm paying for now. Always hitting those smaller goals on the way to the finish line now though.

I've heard some news about the not-to-distant future and my area. If what I've been hearing is true, my property value might be increasing by a lot in the next 5 or 6 years, regardless of what I'm doing to improve it.

The tax flight out of Illinois and my proximity to both the expressway and the big city are already a big draw, but this will be a game changer. Even right now, the code enforcement officer told me that houses are selling so quick here that if your house is still on the market 48 hours after you listed it than you're asking too much.

Maybe I got one more lucky streak in me before I finally make that move into a small house with a big garage for my workshop down by my brother.

I appreciate the warning, but don't you think that somebody as wealthy as SECONDRATE wouldn't just hire a PI? He says he's done that already for people he doesn't like, and I have indirect evidence that he's done that on me a few years ago. AFAIK he ALREADY knows where I live, where I was born, who my family is etc.

Yes, he's a malicious vindictive SOB, but he can't dox me because THAT would be openly ill-eagle and would make ALL of his online defamation against me totally actionable.

My guess is that as long as it's a recognized site: Vox, CNN, WaPo, etc. there would only be the usual amount of malware embedded on that site. Google trackers (IIRC called googletags, which I have globally disabled with NoScript) and other commercially-available trackers.

I think what SIX is concerned about is that SECONDRATE has a way of harvesting IPs when a commercial link is clicked on.

Correct?

If that's the case I sure would like to know how it's done!

This website had a feature which allowed users to be tracked to the server thru which they communicate to the internet, which provided rough geographic location, but not even necesarily to the nearest city. If anyone who was delusionally calling me a "Russian troll" had bothered to access that feature, they would have seen that my server is in the LA area. Big surprise! (NOT)

I haven't checked on that lately to see if it's still functional. Some features (PMs) seem to have gone by the wayside, or been disabled.

Ordinary commercial recognizable links should be no concern beyond ordinary concern of corporations harvesting and embedding information for profit. But it's possible to create IP harvesters hidden behind - say - image files. And I'm not sure what other types of malware might be embedded.

Basically, don't click on links you don't recognize.

I'd add - no matter who posts them. Because you don't need to be malicious to post an malicious link, even if accidentally.

I did explain a bit of that that on one of the other threads and was going to try to keep it out of the Garden, but might as well talk about it here now.

First, regarding Second's link...

There is a 50/50 chance there's nothing malicious behind it at all. There are link shorteners out there, simply designed to do exactly that. Shorten links. (and bit.ly is one of them) They can actually be beneficial on an archaic site like this since long links here can screw up your post and make the words "bleed" off the side.

But we know that Second lies about everything else, and you wouldn't even know if you were conned after you clicked on it, so there's zero ROI to doing so.

Second, regarding my link...

You got Rick-Rolled.

Anybody who did gave me not only their IP address and location and the exact time and date they clicked on it, but I also know who their ISP is, what device they used, what Operating System they have, and what version of what browser they used when they clicked the link... among other information.

And not the IPv4 listed when you "ipconfig" yourself in Command Prompt either, but the public address the rest of the world sees when you're communicating out there. (You need to log into your own router to see this addy, and with cable internet these days it usually changes on its own every few months if you don't force it to change earlier than that).

I'm kind of amazed that nobody blew the Rick-Roll "joke". It's so out of date and cringe in 2021. I would have just denied it, of course, and that would probably have led to others clicking on it sooner than they did. But not one single person ever mentioned it after the fact and that really surprised me.

My first hit was on Valentine's Day. The last one was 11 days ago. I've gotten a few bots since then, but with my last legitimate hit being that long ago and being satisfied that I got what I came for and also proof that we don't have Russian spies on here as a side bonus, I figured it was time to come clean when I saw Second using a similar link knowing what he could do with that information and not wanting anyone to let it fall into his hands.

Oh... and props to Brenda. She never clicked on the link. She was either told by people who know what they're talking about and already knew not to click on strange links, or she wasn't enticed or interested at all in my list to all of the garbage the resident trolls posted (this list very much does exist, but I have no actual reason to put it out there at this time. And hopefully I don't need to add anything else to it anymore).

This is one of the things I addressed in another thread and the comment that made me decide to talk about it in here where the people I really wanted the warning to go out congregate.

You know how most news sites link to other articles of their own or elsewhere online by letting you click on the sentence referring to the link rather than the actual link being posted? A lot of blogs I'd been on over the years allowed you to do this as well, and the means of doing it were usually subtly different from site to site. I'm not sure if you can do it here or not since I've never bothered trying, but if you can, it would be just as easy to wrap the spoof link up in a legit link wrapper like one of the websites you listed above.

Now the bottom of your web browser (at least Firefox) will show you what the actual link you're hovering over is, if this were the case, but do you make it a habit to look at the bottom of the screen to double check? Even I don't do that in many cases. I ALWAYS do it when I'm in my email and you should be on high alert, but now that I know they've dumbed this tracking process down for morons and they're giving it away for free, I'm making it a habit to only click on any link after seeing what the actual link is on the bottom of the browser (and that they match).

Along with the "cutt.ly" link I used, they have many different options of LEGIT shorteners to choose from, and Second's "bit.ly" is also on that list. Amusingly, there used to be one called "goo.gl" which you can't use anymore and I'll give you one guess to figure that one out for yourselves.

You can then take that a step further and choose from a long list of fake "vanity" sites that look like they're actual image sites, or gaming sites, or pet enthusiast sites, etc. to hide the rather suspicious looking link shortener. Nothing that is actually a real site, but they sound like they could be, even enough that you might think that you recall having seen them around before at some point.

I hope it doesn't bother you both too much that I did that. I couldn't pick and choose, the PM function here is broke, and I sure wasn't going to talk about it in the open. But I felt with how the behavior around here had devolved basically into evil that something had to be done.

I think we're all capable of being real jerks around here from time to time (except for Brenda ), some more than others, and our post history shows it. But there is a line. And it was crossed. Repeatedly.

Guilty as charged.

You and pretty much everybody but Brenda, yeah. I got you twice. I had the same one under a different wrapper in a post that first night before I made it part of my signature.

But, i mean, c'mon... When's the last time you really just sat back and enjoyed the timeless vocal genius of Rick Astley?

I really, really don't want you to be concerned about it though. I know that's actually asking a lot of you. I know how I am, personally, and I'd be mortified right now if somebody was telling me what I just told you, and I'd probably do what Nilbog did and disappear from the site too.

You and I can occasionally be real dicks to each other here, but I'm not petty. Translating the information I have can very much lead to finding out other more personal things, but it's not a low effort activity, and I doubt very much that I could do it for free unless I really did a ton of research... You know how cheap I am, and even if I didn't have a million other better things to do with my time and my money I assure you that I wouldn't do something stupid just because we're having a little bitch fit with each other. Besides... What could I do with it that would actually be legal?

No. This was for the people we know deserve to have their anonymity mask stripped from them because of the truly terrible shit they say every day they post here. Maybe put a little bit of politeness in 'em where their mama failed. *

I'm just happy I could verify that you and Sigs weren't Russian spies as a side benefit.

Not that I ever had any doubts.

* And even with them, you'll notice that I only posted the last two digits of their IP as well as presenting them with two different ones so nobody but them and I would know that I knew what those last two were for sure when they saw them.

I was wondering about that. Kiki's 2 were from two separate days.

But you weren't the only person who clicked it twice almost immediately. I thought maybe the program had some sort of glitch when I'd see some of the hits pop up twice right next to each other, but that's probably what happened with all of them.

Still keeping Rick-Rollin' alive in 2021. Welcome to the club now.

I figured I'd put that video in there because half the people on this forum honestly believe that I'm stupid and wouldn't have thought twice about what I just did to them when they clicked on it.

I'm not trying to get people to stop lying. It's the really nasty stuff I'm trying to curtail. Liars are going to lie. It just makes everything else he says even more suspect when he knows that you're not from Russia but continues to say that you are.

But the death threats and bulling need to stop. There is no reason for anybody to behave like that. Even Twitter wouldn't put up with that, no matter how much virtue signalling the person did on the side.

True, that. One of the corporate social media giants ... I forget which one ... got into SERIOUS trouble when one of their users kept urging another one to commit suicide, and he did.

But, yanno, I think SECONDRATE STILL hasn't figured out what you did! He thinks he's so smart and so rich, that he can snoop on anybody ... and nobody's gonna snoop back.

Good on ya. Just remember, to CYA, the same restrictions apply to you as to SECONDRATE ... or anyone else: You can't dox people. That's a serious no-no.

I know. The Roomba would have been banned a long time ago off of any of them. We're in the Wild West here, and that's where I prefer to be. If I wanted a blankey and a pacifier I'd be Tweeting something right now. It's not Haken's job to play babysitter. It's amazing to me that this site even still works.

I dunno. I'm pretty sure he gets it.

And if he didn't 24 hours ago, between the Covid thread and what I posted in here last night he should get it now. He's already said he always reads this thread, which is quite obvious, since he loves to quote stuff I post about my actual life and try throwing it in my face when he's lost an argument.

I remember that you contacted a lawyer to sue me for defamation. I waited, but nothing happened about the lawsuit you promised. You would lose because "1kiki" is not your name but a pseudonym. In general, fake names can't be defamed unless you called yourself "Goofy" as one example, which is copyrighted by Disney. Disney might sue me and win, but you can't, Goofy One Kiki. Trumptards struggle to stay in the middle class because they are crazy and stupid, in my experience with Texas Trumptards. America is not a good place for crazy stupid people to prosper. Failure to thrive is the reason Trumptards voted for Trump. They can't understand they deserve their ass kicking by life in America, but they can't understand their own craziness, either. Let that rain on your garden.

But apparently the possibility was enough to cause you - and your cohorts - to really dial back on the libel. So, reality did its job.

I've been doing housework and some additional indoor cleaning while I recover from the not-so-heavenly bamboo dig-out. It's taken me THIS long to get back to whatever is normal for me. But in the meantime I cleaned the kitchen ceiling fan blades (greasy as well as dusty) and hubby's big computer chair which hadn't been cleaned in years. Among other things, it involved pulling wads of hair out that had wrapped around the wheel axles. Well, I know at least TWO things got their occasional cleaning!

I hope it's not too deep or long, BRENDA!

Cuts on fingers/hands seem to take a long time to heal bc they're always being used: getting rubbed, dunked, or bent.

I scraped skin off the palm of my hand on the sharp end of a stick, and it's taken forever to heal. I finally had to put vaseline and a waterproof bandaid on it for a few days before the healing got faster than the damage I was doing!

Awww ... man! I did something similar a few weeks ago - cut my thumb on a tuna can trying to clean it out for recycling. That rough edge cutting really hurt. To get it to finally heal I had to put the edges together and put a band-aid on fairly snugly, to keep the sides of the cut together. And I cut the thumb off of a disposable plastic glove and taped it around the edge to keep it dry. And I was really careful with it for a few days, trying to not put any pressure on it to split it open again.

That stinks. I hope it's not too bad and heals quickly, Brenda.

It's nothing major SIG. I had opened a can of tomatoes for one her recipes and didn't realize how close my thumb was to the jagged edge of the lid and zip.

Yup, it didn't start hurting till I got home and had to do my own things. It'll heal in a couple of days.

I was surprised that she didn't offer me a plastic glove to finish washing dishes but the bandaid got wet and she had to give me another one before I left work.

Don't think it will take too long to heal Kiki. It did hurt a bit last night but it seems fine so far today.

If I had a dollar for every time I cut my hands I'd have Jeff Bezos money.

Let's just say my hand modeling days are done.

FUN FACT: When Napoleon Dynamite was bought, they were required to do some re-shoots before it hit theaters. One of them was getting a hand model to do the entire original scene because the suits said Jon Heder's hands were too "ugly".

That was even more frustrating for the director since that scene was not even originally in the movie and was a required re-shoot so they could put Napoleon's school ID card in there with the year on it because test audiences had no idea what year the movie was supposed to take place in and were confused since it seemed like the 80's but they had the internet.

So that entire intro was shot twice because OMG what would people think if a dude that looked like Napoleon Dynamite didn't have beautiful hands.
