It was really hot here on Sunday, so I guess maybe that's what happened to you.

When I went to take puppy-wuppy out for a walk itwas like a steambath, and I came back dripping. Literally. I was going to bin up clippings and pull some grasses, but I wound up doing "indoor" work instead bc we have our AC set to 77 during the day, so it was tolerable. I had several things that I wanted to accomplish:

participate in hubby's telemed appt (done). He now has new RXs for the upcoming year including the one his neuro used to Rx. Plus I asked for a month of a well-known med to use off-label to see if it controls Meniere's disease and he was OK writing that. In addition, we found out that altho his doctor is open-minded about ivermectin, their standard treament is monoclonal antibodies as post-exposure prophylaxis/early symptom treatment with good success.

Oh BTW BRENDA ... we have the same problem with our PCs: they were set up as work stations, no microphone and no camera. And since they email the link - which we can't use bc no camera and no phone, and we refuse to use our active emails on our very insecure phones, we have to call and make special provisions for them to text the link to our smartphones. I'm pretty sure you don't have a smartphone but if you get one they ARE good for virtual appointments.

schedule the termite treatment (done)

call another neurologist who claims to be able to manage both hubby's and daughter's care, and make an appointment (done)

make intial appointments for dear daughter and hubby with our standard HCP neuros. (NOT done) There was something hinky with the phone system. I could not direct dial that department ("Phone system problems prevent placing the call as dialed") nor could I be transferred tru their main switchboard (they tried xfering but after being onhold for a few minutes the call would revert back to another operator on the switchboard!) But I DID ID a specialist for hubby and one for dear daughter.

buy a harness for puppy-wuppy. (NOT done.) You would think this would be the simplest of all, but I did try to buy a harness for her at some time in the past, and altho she is small she's built a little like a whippet: deep deep chest, narrow waist. So I need one with separate adjustments for neck and chest, and buckles for both neck and chest would be helpful. I found one that everyone said their dogs loved, with what I was looking for, but puppy is just 1-2" too small at both measurements to fit. DRATS. back to th drawing board!

Today and the next week or so promises to be cooler, so I see more yardwork in my future.

Some well else told me about the smartphone thing which I won't do as I hate cell phones.

As I said this computer was given to me and refurbished, and no one least of all me thought I would need to do something like that.

I am a dinosaur as I would prefer a face to face meeting with the anyone. So I do for October as I said but it could be bumped up before if someone cancels anything. The office didn't say that but it is always possible anyways.

Out for my walk in a bit and it must have rained over night as the roof tops around me all have water on them. So that is good. Hope some of it went up the Interior and no lighting. Just rain.

Need some groceries today.

The good thing about knowing that you need to buy a microphone and a camera for your computer is that you also know that there wasn't already a microphone and camera on it that were already listening and watching everything you said and did.

That's always annoying. I don't go down too often to my brother's but I've been there twice when they did that.

I wonder if they feel as dumb as I do when they walk in a place with three grown men to reach up and press a button. Especially that time the dude was short enough to need a step stool and my old man can reach it just standing up.

EDIT: To be fair though, the building is primarily for the elderly with low income. It's not that no younger people live there, but if they're in that building it's because they have mental and/or physical handicaps.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

I haven't been taking walks, but I HAVE been spending more time outside. The temps have finally dropped for a few days, and we have real cloud cover today tho no chance of rain, so it's quite a moderate day so far with good clean air.

I do intend to start regular walks in the AM when it's quiet, cooler, and the air is nicer.

My lovely raspberry-ice crape myrtle is about 1/4 open in terms of all its buds. I think it's especially pretty! and I enjoy it every day I'm outside.

In that game all it takes is one good hand and I got that in the first one. Scored over 5,000 points and they just kept adding up. Finished with over 6,000 and just nudged one of the other ladies I was playing out of the way to get that top spot.

After spending a lot of time building up my social credit, I've had a few days for me.

I've got most of my stuff in line to start putting legit windows on my porch. When time is good for everyone, I should have my buddy and his dad helping out. We should be able to re-frame the entire front and side it in a day, and hopefully do the back in another day, although it may not go that quickly back side since I have to put a new door in there and I will be expanding the entry to put in a much wider door. (No more taking the doors off a fridge to get it inside when/if I need a new one).

If we can get this done, I should hopefully be able to remodel the inside of it this winter and finally have a beautiful three season room to enjoy for the first time since I moved here.

In fact, I got energy efficient windows going in, and I've got 9 bats of insulation I picked up for 66% off two years ago on standby, so all it would take is putting my oil/radiator heater out back and I could use that room year round when I'm done.

I got the bug to work on my living room today for the first time in weeks. I sanded down a bulk of the really bad mud spots, and most of the imperfections in the ceiling. Then I washed the two complete walls and as much of the ceiling as I could while I was already on the ladder.

Hopefully I still have the bug tomorrow. I probably won't get any primer or paint up, but I should at least have everything set to paint if I can stick with it for another full day.

I love painting, but I hate mudding and sanding. When I finally get this done it will be one of the final mental bottlenecks in the 1st floor work.

Over here it's been one doctor after anither. Hubby and dear daughter went to see a neuro and I went with them it was sort of an interview appointment. Hubby likes him. Daughter is indifferent. Me not so much.

I have other neuros lined up, a different one for each since each one has a different issue, but this appts won't be happening until towards the end of the year.

All the trimming is done, and the weather is WONDERFUL for outdoor work, but that had to be delayed bc something daughter and I ate disagreed terribly with us, and today was a delayed grocery shopping day.

Tomorrow AM, I guess, I put in a couple of hours and then inside to help hubby handle the bedframe for tenoning the legs and mortising the frame.

Then make dinner. Some time today or tomorrow I need to try on puppy wuppy's new harness and see if it fits.

Amazon sent the wrong size harness. Harrumph! Got a return authorization code and ordered a replacement, which should be in tomorrow. I HAVE to have one by Thursday.

Managed to get in a couple of hours of yardwork, weeding up the sunflower patch. Hubby decided to take a vacation so no bedframe work today, and tomorrow I feel like I need to start boxing things up that might be heat-damaged - like irreplaceable photographs- bc I don't want to be running around on Wednesday at the last minute.

So, tomorrow it is. Sigh.

Yeah... Been busy.

Just finished again for the day today, so two really good days in a row in the living room.

I finished sanding all the mud and sanding down high spots on the walls. Finished sanding the ceiling and leveling the cracks out. Also washed everything down as I was going along.

Did something that I've wanted to do since I bought the house. The return for the furnace under a large grate was cut out by morons, and was one of the jaggyist jobs I've ever seen. Cutting them some slack though, the walls and ceilings are made of 1/2" plaster on top of 1/4" drywall, so it's not easy to cut through at all without a power tool. But man... did it look like crap with the yellow wall sticking out in non-uniform pieces below that grate before.

I didn't have any proper blades for my own power tools, so I scored the fronts with a utility knife where I wanted them, used a keyhole saw to cut down to the new opening, made a few more keyhole relief cuts, then I carefully banged them out with a hammer. Did this on all 4 sides since none of them were cut right.

After that, I used a file to get it all down even. I had a little high quality primer left in a gallon from the cabinets, so I primed the inside of the return including the studs as well as the filed down sides and in front of the grate. Hit it twice, actually, while using the rest up covering some of the sanded mud and all of the cracks in the ceiling while I was waiting for the first coat to dry.

The inside of the return is going to be painted the same color as the wall and then covered up by the white grate when I'm finished. It will look a lot better than the filthy back's of drywall and 60 year old dark studs.

I'm more or less ready to start painting. There are a few other things I should probably do first, but since it's only a primer coat going up first I probably will do that next just so I can finally see some real progress.

That's the bitch about this prep-work. You can put a full 16 hours into it and look at how shitty everything still looks and feel like you've gotten nothing accomplished.

But at least that return looks awesome now.

Ah... The Dollar Store is where I get my Super Glue. They must stock different things up North, eh?

Do they have the individual use 4-packs there?

Those things are beyond awesome. For a quarter a piece you have a little tube that has a self-puncturing tip to use what you need and then throw it out. I probably get 4 times as many uses for the buck that way since I don't think a bottle of superglue I've ever used even worked the 2nd time I ever got around to trying to use it.

It made fixing a few things like some peeling veneer on my kitchen work so much easier and faster than trying to put a large tube of liquid nails behind something when I could just put that tiny super glue nozzle back there and it set immediately with no mess.

I'm not sure about all Dollar Stores but the one I bought the Krazy Glue in had Super Glue too. Krazy Glue is what this lady's husband always used so that is what I bought. And it too comes with it's own needle to open the tube and you use that to close it back up again.

ETA: I think the Super glue was being sold in single tubes.

Good on me!

Hubby was trying to buy precision ground bar stock to make a miter fence for his band saw, but I offered to go digging thru the garage and take pictures of what might look useful and show them to him. (He's not feeling well today,.)

In a "what the heck" moment I tried the miter fence from his table saw in his band saw, and apparently it fits well enough to use. He forgot that the table saw was Canadian, and metric. His band saw is Italian, and also metric.

Apparently needs some modification so let's hope he can make it work.

Also tackled the "toy box" where I keep a lot of memorabilia, and took out all of the photos and negatives ... and also dear daughter's MRI scans so they don't get ruined during heat treatment.

I worked until 10PM today!

I made the mistake of starting the day off by mowing the lawn and not getting up early enough to miss the heat/humidity. That was pretty draining and it took me a while to get back to the living room afterward.

I think I severely over-estimated how quickly I could get that done once I started primer. Sure... it's one room, but in reality it's the hub of the house and 2/3rds of the entire 1st floor. There's a LOT of intricate paint that needed being done compared to even something like a large bedroom.

The old colors were so dark that I decided to cut in everything with primer twice before rolling anything. Never got to rolling by the time the sun went down.

The windows look pretty fantastic with two coats of primer on them. Really gives me an idea now of what things are going to look when it's done.

I still have to extend the sills so I can put the casing up once everything is painted though.

I think I'm going to hold off on any paint for a while, work on that and focus on fixing the damage on the existing trim and doors before I paint. I really don't think I'm going to like the colors I bought two years ago, and there's no sense in me painting it only to have to buy new paint and do it again. I think I'm also going to buy a higher grade of paint than what I've got on hand too.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

I've been plugging away at yardwork and other stuff. I'm trying to decide at what point should I assemble the rototiller and start some heavy-duty tilling and regrading. I THINK I want to do that before I complete digging out the section where I want to lay in a path. (I laid out some lines today and decided exactly where I want the path to be.) But I also think I want to work around the one coast live oak first - weeding all the 'ruderal' weeds in the root zone, removing soil from around the root collar, and mulching with recommended mulch.

I read a piece of advice on growing natives. Basically it said, pick and space you can do well, do it, and move on. It's better than doing the whole place badly every year. That makes sense to me. OTOH one can't just do a small space, then another small space, then another small space ... and so on ... without an over-all plan. So I'm trying to create a plan as I'm working, so that I'll have it all figured out by the time I get to doing serious work on those small spaces.

I've also reached out to a couple places for names of tree companies that can do major work on the 2 large coast live oaks in my yard. I need some very large branches either taken off or significantly reduced, without - hopefully - having a bad effect on tree health. It'll take more knowledge and experience than I have to make those judgement calls about how much and where.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

My problem is that I'm trying to keep everything looking... if not "good", at least not terrible. I have a neighbor who complains about our front yard everytime we chat, and it just bugs the shit out of me to see things in complete disarray. So I spent some time weeding out the vegetable patch that I didn't have time to prep and plant out (it has cantaloupe, sunflowers that dear daughter wanted to try, self-sown borage, with nasturtiums coming in spring, and lots and lots of grasses of all types), raking a bit here, clipping a bit there, repotting some things and dumping others (I gave up on that "gold coin", it needs way too much water and looks terrible when it doesn't get it), a bit of sweeping...

Nothing ever DONE done, just tackling the worst bits so I don't get aggravated just looking at it.

I know that's the wrong approach but I can't seem to ignore some stuff long enough to devote that time to other stuff. And since my arthritis has flared up lately and my back is still bothering me, I only have an hour or two a day to devote to general upkeep (yardwork, cleaning, helping with repairs or woodworking) before I get so stiff and sore that I can't continue.

Which reminds me, I'm going to nostly disappear for a bit so I can get more things done.

I'm not getting a clear picture here, but are you saying that no improvement is being made despite your best effort?

That can be extremely hard on your state of mind, particularly if a neighbor is being a dick about it. My god... my neighbors would absolutely hate that person for the amount of shit I let my neighbors (mostly) get away with.

Maybe at this point, you need to pare down your expectations for how you want your yard to look if you can't find a reasonably priced person who could do it all for you. I'm not saying letting things run wild, but instead to design your yard to be as low maintenance as possible.

Just a suggestion. I know a bit about biting off more than you can chew, and unfortunately outside is where it is most likely to be a constant struggle.

That's pretty much it.

Routine stuff indoors is dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, toilet cleaning, cooking, dishwashing, and tidying up. The dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, and toilet cleaning hardly take any time at all. But outdoors, with a 365 growing season, things get aggressively out of hand fast.

There has been SOME progress on "things I won't need to do again for a long time", mainly tree work, pruning, and planting.

But I've been trying to make up for the three weeks that missed bc of bad back, all the Dr appts this month and finding new neuros, and the last week has been preparing for the termite treatment to come ... trimming plants 1 ft away from the house, collecting up things that may be damaged by heat ... so have not been able to make actual progress for well over a month. I guess life got in the way of my plans

KIKI, speaking of tree work, the company that did such a great job on the avocadoes was Greentech Tree Trimming and the person I spoke with was Salvador, 562-629-1038.

But you might want a consulting arborist, since natives are a whole 'nother story!

Well, I didn't mention the things I HAVEN'T gotten done while focusing on the yard. Like, the inside of my house looks like a bomb went off. And it's not as if I've made such great strides on the yard since I'm only doing a small space (I think of it as the firefighters 'defensible space' ) while the rest of my yard still looks terrible. So that's the trade-off. I spend probably 2 hours a day working outside, and maybe another 2 hours or so educating myself online about everything I might need to know to take the next steps and locating sources for what I need, like gorilla hair mulch.

But I THINK that's what I need to do to get the result I want. I've hired people in the past to come in and do work, and it's always a compromise between what I want done and what they're equipped, ready, and used to doing. (BTW, I'm with you. I never hire 'illegals' to save money. If I can't pay full freight, I do it myself.) And sometimes they do extra 'helpful' things like remove plants I want, or butcher large trees.

Years - actually 3 decades - ago, when I was younger and had a lot more energy, I had a 'wildflower' front yard for about 4 years. Man, that thing was a time-suck. I had to keep non-stop weeding the entire thing by hand to keep the wildflowers from being invaded by grasses and other undesirable plants.

So my decision back then, based on my experience with a REALLY high-maintenance front yard (which looked fabulous btw), for when I eventually had to time for it, (which is now,) became creating a very low maintenance yard.

To that end I'm focused on

1) hardscape, like wooden walkways and patios; and eventually a paver patio in the 'lower 40'. If installed correctly wooden anything provides a safe walking surface (even, solid, stable underfoot, bone-friendly), (some with stabilized decomposed granite underneath to cap off the lead-contaminated soil and keep it from blowing or washing around as lead-contaminated dust; some on sand; all on some type of draining material to keep them from sitting in puddles; ALL with ipe edging and substructure; ... also btw do NOT put a dry well within 10' of any structure, driveway, sidewalk etc or you risk collapse of the drywell followed by whatever is near it). Not only is wooden hardscape people-friendly, it also prevents soil compaction. And hardscape is the ultimate in low maintenance. I intend to use ipe as the support structure, and Alaska 'yellow' cedar as the decking (aged with a vinegar/ iron solution to take it to grey), to reduce that chance of creating a termite haven. Everything I install I intend to make water permeable to prevent rain run-off from my yard, assuming we go on to getting more rain in the future.

2) mulch in most places without hardscape. After I gave up on my wildflower front yard, I mulched it with 'Trackside' and other brands of horse-stable bedding pine shavings, used as a mulch. These pine savings are more like coarse sawdust. THEY ALL DID A FANTASTIC JOB SUPPRESSING WEEDS!!!
I can't emphasize that enough.
What I found out was that they eventually settled down to a about half their original height, and developed a crust that kept them from blowing around or washing away, while letting water and air through. It was 3 years before enough dirt and what not had accumulated on top, and enough had decomposed from below, when weeds started - minimally - to come back. ***BTW Las Pilitas - which I know about thanks to you - *** recommends mulch for all natives between 3-6" deep but (as I'm sure you know) not heaped up to the plant stem/ trunk, and pine shavings is one of the recommended mulch types.
These pine shavings did bleach out in the sun and became a very, very pale yellow. It was not a natural look at all. But after settling down, I had about 4" to spare and I COULD have added natural bark on top to make it look better. I just didn't take the time or spend the money, because it wasn't important to me.
***BTW thanks to you***, I know that many, if not a vast majority, of native bees nest in bare dirt. And I intend to eventually have that, but only after I can create them as 'defensible spaces' in the yard.
And also BTW, a soil prof in Oregon DISrecommends cardboard laid over dirt as a mulch to kill Bermudagrass. She says it's dessert for termites, and that they eat it like candy. She recommends roughly 6" minimum of mulch, but especially around the edges since you need to exclude all light.
*** ALSO much thanks to you!!!*** I'll be getting corn-gluten pre-emergent weed preventer. After I amend (with pine shavings), till, and level the dirt (tho not in the oak root zones, where I'll just weed, expose the root crowns, and mulch), I intend to use the corn-gluten weed preventer (which I know I need to water in), and then mulch.
After I address the basics of weed removal, soil prep, grading, digging, mulching, edging, etc, it will to allow me to move forward with removing some pretty large shrubs and trees that planted themselves. But the idea is I hope to put the weeding, grading, etc behind me as DONE !!! so that I don't need to keep going after it over and over and over, so that I can move forward to plant removal and hardscape instillation and eventually planting.

3) trees and large shrubs as the backbone of my plantings. If you pick the right (tall) ones they let breezes blow underneath. And if you're lucky enough to have a N/S running structure that can be shaded morning and evening by trees casting long shadows, they will directly keep your house cooler. They ALSO shade the yard, keeping it from getting hot and radiating onto your house, which indirectly also keeps your house cooler. If you pick deciduous trees, you are able to have light in your yard during the dark winter months.
If you pick natives (or other drought tolerant trees) suited for your area, and especially if you pick flowering and/ or fruiting trees and shrubs, they'll provide good habitat.
If you prune judiciously over the years (which I never did), they're low maintenance. So aside from monthly watering (my heavy clay soil retains water for a long time, your light sandy soil might need 2X a month watering) and judicious timely pruning, they're low maintenance.

4) BTW, I do intend to plant things OTHER than trees and large shrubs. But they'll be in small, confined, easy to reach spaces, that allowing for easier care than - for example, constantly weeding an entire front yard by hand.

Anyway, obviously there's more to my plan, but that's my basics for a LOW MAINTENANCE, heat and light helpful, environmentally-friendly, safe and people-and-pet-friendly, yard.

I really, really recommend mulch for you at your stage of landscaping. You really need to get ahead of the weeds permanently, to allow you to stop dealing with them over and over, so that you can move on to more productive tasks.

Oh, btw Signy, I called in a consulting arborist last year to go over my yard to tell me what I needed to do with the trees, and give me suggestions for small trees to plant in front on either side of my walkway. She's one of the people I did ask about tree services - who did she recommend.

And I hope even if you don't post, you do read at least this thread.

Walls and ceiling primed in the living room.

Man... am I glad that I cut in twice. Even with two passes with the brush the coverage isn't as much as a single roll and it's evident with the really dark colors underneath.

I had 1 1/2 gallons of the drywall (cheap) primer and went through them. Went through another 1/2 I had of the Bullzeye 123Plus and even had to crack open another one to finish the job.

I was going to buy the same ceiling paint I used 2/3rds of a gallon of in the kitchen today, but the Pittsburgh Ultra is having a huge sale right now at only $12 per gallon after rebate! I bought two of them to finish the ceiling.

Going to go back later this week to pick up some different colors for the living room. I don't feel so bad about not using those 3 gallons I bought for the task almost 2 years ago if I can replace them for only $36.
