Exposed the front of the porch down to the studs and didn't disturb the plastic. So nice not to have to look at those nasty slats anymore.

I'm glad I went ahead and did this on my own instead of waiting until my friend and his dad are here Saturday. I'm already 13 hours of labor into demolition myself. It could have gone a lot quicker though I guess if we weren't trying to protect the plastic still.

I think tomorrow I'm going to start pulling the siding I'm scavenging off the garage and putting up the plastic to protect it for the winter until I re-side the garage in the spring.

I'll also have to go out and buy my exterior door so I can have that ready too.

Exciting.

Geez...

Aluminum prices haven't been this high in 12 years.

Good News: I put my gutters up this month last year and probably saved myself $600 by not waiting until now.

Bad News: I just left a whole bunch of aluminum for the scrappers at the curb last night.

Oh well... It was filthy and I really wouldn't have wanted to put that in my car. It also had a lot of caulk on it that I wasn't going to clean off, so I wouldn't have gotten the price for "clean" metal at the recycle place anyhow. Probably $10... maybe. Not worth the trouble.

Hmmmm... looking at national recycle prices, it wouldn't even have been that much. Maybe there's a lag for recycle prices going up after new prices do, because the recycle price increase is way behind the new price right now year to year.

Well, that's if you don't count almost an entire town being wiped off the map with fire. And I mean Lytton which was 90% destroyed by a wild fire.

I guess this fire season won't finish up as bad as it started out for BC. Have to see what the Wild fire services say in October. Think there could be a couple of more weeks left to fire season, but now we've started to enter Fall and that means a lot of rain for the coast. Think fire season in BC finishes around the beginning of October.

As for today it was wet, wet, wet where I am. It is looking to be a very soggy start to Fall in BC. Weather people said today's rainfall will be as much as we had in January.

Yup, some people are going in with help to start sifting through the rubble of their homes for anything important to them that might have survived the fire. It's going to take a while for Lytton to rebuild.

That is possible.
That storm yesterday hit BC and may have travelled into Alberta then petered out before getting out of there.

That's good that quake wasn't any bigger.

Nearly completed the porch demo this morning before my buddy and his dad came over. My bud came by about an hour earlier and we got it all finished before his old man showed up.

Got all 4 windows framed out, all the plywood walls up, wrapped 'em and installed all 4 windows before they had to leave at 4:30PM!

I just wrapped up the cleanup, and filled 3 more cans full of trash. Had to cut down a lot of old boards, and I took off all the aluminum so the scrappers will be pleased again next week. It'll take me a few weeks to get rid of everything from the demo.

IT'S BEAUTIFUL!!!!

And I finally have airflow in there again. It's got to be at least 20 degrees cooler in there than it's been in the last 3 months.

I should be able to get the siding from off the garage and get the front of the house wrapped up tight tomorrow.

I'm going to hold off on siding the back though until we pick up the new door and get it installed.

Huge day today. My curb appeal just went up more from this than all the other things I've ever done in the last 10 years combined.

Sorry though... I can't share the pics on this one. Too easy to identify.

Whenever I get the inside remodeled I'll share some of those though.

I felt it, but only just barely, 3 extremely small ground shifts. If I had to say how much displacement, I'd guess well under an inch. And I only noticed it because I was sitting very still. Otherwise I wouldn't have noticed it at all.

It was near Carson. But to satisfy my curiosity I've been trying and trying to find out what fault it was on, and I can't find a single mention of that.

I went to a weather site to check it out! It looks like your temps were as low as a brisk 50F last night, and as high as a comfortable 65F today, and that that'll be your weather for the next 10 days except for Wednesday, when your daytime temps will be as high as 70F. I could deal with a heat wave like that!

Jack, that sounds like a lot of progress.

I know this is like asking about 'when was your last hiccup' - but - when did your place stop popping and creaking? And how much displacement was there when it was all over? Just being nosy.

There was a lot of rain Friday night so that explains the temps. Around 4pm, I guess it started raining then around 6:30pm a thunder and lighting storm rolled through still with the rain.

It is now 8:40pm and it is still raining. Tomorrow there is suppose to be rain and more possible thunder and lighting storms. These will be travelling into Alberta.

Monday is looking dry according to the weather and so is Wednesday. So, it shouldn't be too bad for next week.

It didn't really ever stop. I still get pops and cracks. But I think I've exaggerated the consequences in my head, aside from the water I was taking in.

After completely gutting the porch, it was obvious that the settling that had occured was a long time before I got here, because of the way that everything had been shimmed.

I painted that kitchen ceiling quite a few months back now after doing no other ceiling repair other than sanding down the high points and it looks as good as it did when I put the paint on.

There is some ceiling and wall damage on the 2nd floor that I painted 9 or so years ago, but it's hairline stuff.

The attic is where the bulk of the action took place, but ever since it became noticeable I have been monitoring it and it hasn't seemed to get any worse. (The easiest way of monitoring it was cleaning up the debris from the screws that popped and not seeing any more accumulate since then).

Hopefully I'm good. We'll see what happens.

So, just to be sure I understand ... These are all questions

You removed both the outer siding and the inner wall and took the front porch down to the studs. (demo)

Then you re-framed the windows because the replacement windows were a different size than the original.

You installed the windows. And - now you have airflow because you had plastic over the old windows because they always leaked, because they were badly installed. But now you can open the windows because you have useable ones.

You're taking siding off the garage and putting it on the porch.

How complete is that?

Just trying to develop a mental picture of what you've done and where you are now.

But even if I misunderstood some of it, that's a fantastic amount of major work! And your social capital has paid off!

I only took the siding down that needed to be taken down to get to what we needed to work on. The siding that is missing now will be salvaged from the garage today since you can't buy that color/style anymore. (I'll wrap it and reside the garage with the new color I'm going to paint the house next year).

Quote:

There were no original windows lol. Huge 1"x5" "slats" in place of framed walls on the front with single pane aluminum track garbage that let in all the water that rotted the floors. These were wrapped in aluminum after they were installed at some point, because you could tell they were moldy and rotten under the aluminum.

It was even worse on the back with no slats and just a few 1"x4" boards "framing" out the openings for the same garbage "windows" back there... also letting in all the water.

That's why I've had the entire thing wrapped up with visqueen for 2 years and it would be 125 degrees on that back porch when it was 90+ for a few days in a row. Finally got a ton of airflow in there again.

Quote:

I can open them because they're actually real windows surrounded by real walls now.

This porch was essentially a tent with a roof on it and I could have kicked out the front and back walls and it would have remained standing. (And with the shape that it was in, it would have been easy to do too).
Quote:

Haven't started. Need to get to it now though. I've got about 7 hours of sunlight.

I was able to buy a lot of channel and a few corner pieces in the right color at least, so I can complete the siding without having to use a different color.

Just a lazy Sunday for me.

Started thinking about what my boss could have meant by her, "I don't have time to hang around the mall" comment from last week.

Have I ever mentioned that she has lousy time management skills when it comes to getting outside chores or even chores done in the house? This is a skill that she has never developed and now she is regretting it.

I was able to get that last piece up before the sun went down. The only reason I was able to do it was because the top of the piece needed to be cut off, because if I had to nail it I wouldn't have been able to see what I was doing.

By 3:15 I had already called my old man and told him there was no way the front was getting sided today. I'd barely done anything. Lots of just staring at it and thinking and hesitating.

But somehow I got the fire started and found my rhythm and got 'er done.

I wasn't just making things up when I said how good it looked even without the siding. Two of my neighbors already told me they love it, and three people I've never even talked to before said how great it looked. One of them was some kid I see zipping around all the time on this fat-tired skateboard thing that looks like it would have been cool as hell to have when I was a kid. You know you've done something right when a kid tells a Boomer how great your work looks.

Sure, if you don't mind mini ones. This recipe I use makes around 24 regular sized ones that I usually freeze. But the freezer on this fridge isn't the best, so I am hoping that mini ones will freeze and last longer.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

I'm just saying HI! all.

Except for it being beastly hot again, and me scheduled to take my kitty in to the vet tomorrow for a few things, nothing new is going on chez moi.

The heat makes it impossible to for me to work outside. And except for my air-conditioned bedroom, indoors it gets pretty warm too, so my indoor work slows down quite a bit as well. It's been going over 100 at my place and is scheduled to be going over 100 for today.

But there's a cooldown startling tomorrow. Uhmm ... we'll see.

There was a really old neighbor who lived 2 doors down, and she'd been living here since she was little. So she had a good historical view of the place. I asked her how did people get along back when, when no one had any AC anywhere at all. And she laughed and said "Oh, we just moved slower.". It's a lesson I took to heart. When it gets over 90, I exempt myself from ambitious schedules.

Sure, if you don't mind mini ones. This recipe I use makes around 24 regular sized ones that I usually freeze. But the freezer on this fridge isn't the best, so I am hoping that mini ones will freeze and last longer.

Those are the ebst kind.

Do you intend to frost them before eating? Yanno, individually?

Not a big fan of buttercream altho I know it lasts longer without refrigeration. But for me ... too sweet. Whipped cream or cream cheese-based is more my style.

Over here in the flatlands it was an unusally mild summer so far. There were a few heatwaves of over-100 temps, but they didn't last very long, and most of the heatwaves were of the 90-100 variety, but with temps cooling of at night.

Of course, I speak as one with house AC,

But I recall when we first moved here there was an 95-105 heatwaves that seemed like it lasted 10 days, and the night temps didn't drop below 85. That, and we were living in the 2nd story of an old (now historic, if it still exists) home right under a flat roof ... no AC... and the thick walls would absorb heat during the day and re-radiate it at night. It was like trying to sleep in an oven.

So when I think of heatwaves I think of that.

We set our AC to 77 during the day - quite tolerable - but after 8PM (and into off peak rates) we set the AC to 72. And our bills have been quite reasonable, since we have solar.

You're weclome to come over any time! We're vaccinated!

I don't frost any cake or cupcakes I make. I feel that is too much sugar and if the frosting isn't mixed right I can feel the sugar grains in it.

Back from my walk and all baking supplies in and ready for whenever I get the mood.

Also ran into one of the support workers who used to come in and help me look after my mom. Had lunch with her and a good talk.

I really appreciate the offer! I can escape the heat. I just need to stay in my AC'd room.

It's how badly the heat affects me getting things done that annoys me.

You removed both the outer siding and the inner wall and took the front porch down to the studs. (demo)

SIX: I only took the siding down that needed to be taken down to get to what we needed to work on. The siding that is missing now will be salvaged from the garage today since you can't buy that color/style anymore. (I'll wrap it and reside the garage with the new color I'm going to paint the house next year).

SIGNY: Then you re-framed the windows because the replacement windows were a different size than the original.

SIX: There were no original windows lol. Huge 1"x5" "slats" in place of framed walls

You mean ... there were no 2X4s holding up the roof at all? Or were these 1X5s just for the "window" "framing" with 2x4s elsewhere?

Nope. Not in the porch. They hold up the header at the end on a concrete slab where the shed is. 4x4's were between slats made of 1x5"s. It's hard to explain because literally nobody else in the country would have ever built that.

Quote:

SIX ... on the front with single pane aluminum track garbage that let in all the water that rotted the floors. These were wrapped in aluminum after they were installed at some point, because you could tell they were moldy and rotten under the aluminum.
It was even worse on the back

Back porch of the house?

Nah. The back side of the porch.

Quote:

SIX ... with no slats and just a few 1"x4" boards "framing" out the openings for the same garbage "windows" back there... also letting in all the water.
That's why I've had the entire thing wrapped up with visqueen for 2 years and it would be 125 degrees on that back porch when it was 90+ for a few days in a row. Finally got a ton of airflow in there again.

I'll bet that feels great!

Yup.

Quote:

Quote:

SIGNY: You installed the windows. And - now you have airflow because you had plastic over the old windows because they always leaked, because they were badly installed. But now you can open the windows because you have useable ones.

SIX: I can open them because they're actually real windows surrounded by real walls now.

Quote:

SIX: This porch was essentially a tent with a roof on it and I could have kicked out the front and back walls and it would have remained standing. (And with the shape that it was in, it would have been easy to do too).

SIGNY: You're taking siding off the garage and putting it on the porch.
How complete is that?

SIX: Haven't started. Need to get to it now though. I've got about 7 hours of sunlight.
I was able to buy a lot of channel and a few corner pieces in the right color at least, so I can complete the siding without having to use a different color.

SIGNY: Just trying to develop a mental picture of what you've done and where you are now. But even if I misunderstood some of it, that's a fantastic amount of major work! And your social capital has paid off!

SIX: Yeah. It's hard to pin them down and get my stuff done, so I've been stressing for a while, but they finally came through for me in a big way.

That's awesome, SIX! I'll bet that's a load off your mind!

Yup. Feels great. If things go right, my friends dad is coming back on Saturday so we can install the door and do a few other things.

Just in time too, because it's going down to 44 degrees tonight by me.

Summer ended fast here. :(

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

So, yesterday I had my cat shaved down to try to help him out with his bad case of chronic hairballs. He had what is called a 'lion cut' where they don't do the head and they leave a puff of fur at the tip of the tail; and also they don't happen to do the lower legs, so he looks like he's wearing furry mukluks. Where they do shave they don't shave all the way down to the skin, they leave a bit less that a quarter inch of fur. So now he looks like a plush toy. Before shaving, with his not-short-and-not-long coat he looked like a tank with short stumpy legs. After shaving he looks like a slinky alley cat with very very long legs - you just couldn't see them before. I always wondered about what he looked like under there.

The odd thing about his x-ray (checking out his gut for obstruction), the vet showed me he has a thin even layer off fat - a healthy amount, not too much and not too little. So know I know by sight and by x-ray that this is a healthy weight for him.

La Niña is about to take US Southwest drought from bad to worse
https://edition.cnn.com/2021/09/24/us/southwest-drought-forecast-clima
te-change/index.html

Quote:

Global scientists reported in August that due to the climate crisis, droughts that may have occurred only once every decade or so now happen 70% more frequently. The increase is particularly apparent in the Western US, which is currently in the the throes of a historic, multiyear drought that has exacerbated wildfire behavior, drained reservoirs and triggered water shortages.
More than 94% of the West is in drought this week -- a proportion that has hovered at or above 90% since June -- with six states entirely in drought conditions, according to the US Drought Monitor.

Here's the current US drought monitor.
Quote:

Though summer rainfall brought some relief to the Southwest, the unrelenting drought there is about to get worse with La Niña on the horizon, according to David DeWitt, director at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center.
"As we move into fall, from October on, the Southwest US, based on all the best information that we have, they're going to see persistent intensification and development of drought," DeWitt told CNN. "There's, at this point, not any indication that they'll see drought relief."

When he says 'they', he means Signy and myself as well as other 'theys'.
Quote:

NOAA's latest projections show a 70& to 80% chance of La Niña emerging during the Northern Hemisphere winter season. With La Niña conditions coupled with warming temperatures, DeWitt said the Southwest will see enhanced evaporation that will intensify drought in certain places.
"The net water balance going forward, from this point as the summer monsoon ends, is that we're going to see conditions continue to dry out," DeWitt said. "Places that have droughts will kind of persist or intensify, and places that don't have drought right now because it was recently ameliorated, we expect drought is going to redevelop."

Just. Great.

Not.
