Just about finished setting the AIO up. I managed to mow the front lawn before the thunderstorms swept in, but didn't get to the back. Oh well.

Bringing up YouTube looks phenomenal on it. It can't do 4k (nothing I own can), but it's the first thing I can put the 1440p60 HD setting without any lag, and with only a 24" screen it looks amazing.

That being said, I'm slightly worried about how long it took to install everything compared to the desktop, but maybe I'm just thinking the desktop was quicker since I was doing two at the same time and had more to keep me busy. I can't imagine that this thing is really slower in any regards than the desktop is. It's the only machine I have with DDR4 memory, and the processor is something like 3.7ghz. The desktop is barely over 3ghz with DDR3 memory, and the desktop I'm giving my aunt only has DDR2 memory.

The only real negative is that I can't do much more to it for speed increases. I'm stuck with the integrated graphics chip. I can upgrade from two 4GB sticks to two 8GB sticks for double the memory if I ever want to shell out for that. I could also get a larger sized SSD than the 250GB one down the road too, but I don't think one SSD is faster than another one (I could be wrong about that?).

The desktop has a slower processor and only uses DDR3 memory, but it's only got 8GB in there now and is upgradable to 32GB. I also have the option to pick up a low-to-mid-level graphics card that will work with only a 240 watt power supply to unload any graphics processing off of the CPU, which would probably be more of a speed increase than anything that I could do to the AIO in the future.

Overall, I'm EXTREMELY happy with these purchases.

My mom had card club. Some ladies would rotate the hosting duties each week. We would know that the night would be spent outside of the room they used, because that day was "cleaning day" at our house.

I don't think I understand. Your desk surface is not deep enough to set the monitor back further? Or are you saying the keyboard is integral to the monitor - neither is detachable?

An AIO is an All In One. The monitor is the computer.

It is replacing the one I have had on my coffee table for the last 5 or so years, in my living room, where I do about 90% of my indoor living. Keyboard/mouse attached to it via USB.

It actually takes up less real estate on the surface of the coffee table because it's on a base rather than three legs like the HP AIOs, but it's so much higher and wider than the old one, and I won't be able to move the coffee table around to vacuum or just out of my way if I wanted to watch the TV without being really careful since it doesn't have the low center of gravity that the old one had.

I think I'm just going to have to get a wireless mouse/keyboard combo and use the new desktop computer with my TV as a monitor for in the living room and find another use for the new AIO.

All in one, example

all of the "workings" of a PC -Video card, memory, CPU, hard drive, power supply etc - are packed into the case right behind the display. Think of it as a thin laptop, on a stand. Just add keyboard and mouse

Yeah... Except the base on the Dell isn't even as substantial as the one in that pic.

It's heavy duty and wouldn't break, but it's only about 6" by 5", with a high center of gravity.

The old HP AIO had two tiny little legs on the bottom of the screen, with a large adjustable back plate that was around 1/3rd of the width of the screen and served as the final leg in a tripod.

Zero chance the HP would ever fall over when moving the coffee table. Almost 100% chance the DELL will fall if great care isn't taken when moving the table.

I put the new DELL through the paces before going to bed last night and I can say for sure that it's the best performer of the bunch. I'm actually kind of blown away by how well it works. The only upgrade I did to it was putting that SSD I bought years ago in there. The 500GB HD that came with it is now going to go in the desktop as a data drive, since there's room for a 2nd drive in there.

Unless we make the jump to quantum computing any time soon, these things should serve me well for years.

Not bad, when Ryzen CPU's are going for anywhere from $225 to over $900 and people are paying over $1,000 for graphics cards.

Here.... Got some pictures.

The old HP with a low center of gravity is impossible to knock over.

The new DELL is probably going to be dangerous to keep on the coffee table.

(Not to mention that with a monitor that's an additional 3", and all that extra height under the bottom of the screen, it's kind of ridiculous on a coffee table)

I'm actually not saying that the DELL design is bad. I think for the way that most people would use it, it's a superior design. Most people aren't going to have a concern about needing a low center of gravity.

The problem the HP has is that it takes up so much room. The DELL is very low profile on your desk, even with a larger monitor.

ETA:

On further inspection, this paragraph is bullshit:

The other problem the HP design has is that you must ALWAYS have the monitor facing up. Not only can you have the DELL facing totally straight, but you can even have it facing down if you wanted to. You've got more options with the DELL if glare is a problem in your house (which it is in mine now that I have privacy film everywhere instead of blinds).

No. You can't turn it down. You can't even make it straight. You can make it a bit more straight than you can with the HP though. If you try to make the HP straight beyond a certain point, it won't stand up anymore since that rear leg is too short to accommodate that.

I still don't understand your issue with the screen size.

OK, so your All In One has detached Mouse and Keyboard, so it is not actually All In One, like a laptop is.

So why not set your monitor back a tad, if the screen is larger than you are comfy with? An extra 3" diagonally must be about and extra 2" width. I don't get the problem.

It is an All in One. All in One means that you don't have a separate monitor and tower.

A laptop is a laptop. Even if I had a laptop, I'd use a mouse because trackpads are cancer.

Quote:

I like the extra size.

The problem is that it sits on a coffee table in my living room. At least the old one did. This thing is top-heavy because of the design, unlike the impossible to knock over HP model. The extra size on top of the fact that the bottom of the screen is nearly 4" higher than the old one means that it will be moved quite a bit when I want to watch the TV on top of any time I'm moving it around to vacuum.

Setting the monitor back further on the table just means a bigger risk that it comes crashing to the floor if it fell over.

It's my best computer I have now, but it probably won't see much use because I'll have to put it up in a bedroom in a place where it won't be moved around much, and I'll have to get a wireless keyboard and mouse to use the desktop that's attached across the room to my TV instead.

It's fine. The one I have on my TV now is more than I need. It's just a shame that I'd already bought this AIO online first. Had I known I'd be getting such a good desktop only a few days later for next to nothing I wouldn't have bought it.

Just finished a sweet harware mod on the desktop.

I had an extra 500GB HDD that I didn't want to go to waste after I swapped it out of the AIO for a 250GB SSD I'd bought years ago.

The problem was, I had nowhere to put it. There was room in the desktop for it, but no way to mount it.

I found an old metal "box" I must have saved from an old computer back in my drinking days for some reason that had tons of small holes on all sides, and using a pair of tin snips, needle nose pliers, an aluminum gutter bending tool and miscellaneous computer screws I'd saved over the years as well as some that were on the metal of the case itself, I was able to mount this 2nd hard drive in there nice and tight and triple my available internal hard drive space.

That's the type of ingenuity you need when you're not made of money and don't have yourself a 3D printer on standby.

Yeah, we do. 1st, 2nd, 3rd and a booby prize.

It does because sometimes 1st can be over $10 but that depends on how many people are playing. The last time I got 1st was back in August just after we restarted and I won $14.

The buy in is $2.

We never used to play for prizes at work, just points on a scratchpad. But the organizer of the bridge game (the Lab Manager, who was a bridge Master) or his designee had some small plastic animals in a table drawer that would come out whenever somebody did something kinda dumb, and we would all laugh about it. There was a lot of "table talk" and good-natured ribbing.

The only one I remember now was a small triceratops, which stood for bidding "too far, too fast" (sometimes called TF squared). It was lighthearted fun, since none of the other players (who were all VERY much better than I was!) took it seriously.

I was able to mow, although I probably shouldn't have. It took a lot longer than it needed to since I basically had to mow twice because the bag wasn't filling up properly and I would have had clump trails otherwise.

After that I realized that it was starting to get cold and I still hadn't changed the oil in my car, so I did that too. That's a bit harder now that I can't do it out on the driveway. Certainly a bit messier. Oh well. It's done now.

Going back to working on my new PCs. Finally got in touch with that guy again and I'll be getting one for my friend this week.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Hey, absolutely nothing to do with anything, but how is your brother doing?
Oh, and while I'm asking, how are the mah jong ladies?

Over the weekend I was visiting some people, and we saw a dog standing in the middle of the street acting very, very oddly. It was a knee-high white dog with a brown patch on its side that looked like it might have had some terrier in it, it had that short semi-curly scruffy-looking coat. They told me that when they drove by it didn't move in the least though the car passed by very closely, albeit slowly and carefully.

When I went out to look - at about a 30' distance I might add - I clapped my hands and called 'hey pooch' loudly. And it turned its head ever so slightly (it moved its nose maybe 2") to look but otherwise stood stock still. It didn't even move the tip of its tail to wag, or alternately curl it under, or cock its ears, or lift one paw or... anything. We all thought 'rabies'. (There are 2 forms of rabies, 'furious' rabies that happens 80-90% of the time, and 'dumb' rabies, also called 'paralytic' rabies that happens the rest of the time.)

I did call Animal Control (thank goodness for the country government, but it seems woefully underfunded and understaffed), and was on hold for 45 MINUTES! before I could tell anyone about it. Yeah, it was on the weekend, and way outside of anything like normal business hours. But I'd sure hate to imagine if it had been a real emergency.

Anyway, while I was waiting on hold, I did look up rabies transmission and environmental contamination. It is NOT spread through urine, feces, or blood. And once the saliva dries out the virus dries out and becomes non-infectious. The rule of thumb is one hour out in the environment.

So when I got home I went online to look for dog behavior with rabies. And found this video. It's not for the faint of heart, so I posted the link to be visible but to not autoload.

https:/ /www. youtube. com/watch?v=keeigDzDf34

After watching it I still think it's a possibility the dog could have had rabies.

My brother's doing okay. He still needs a cane sometimes when he goes out for a walk but that's not bad.

Mah jong ladies are all good as are the two gentlemen that play with us.

Back from my walk and no luck on the nesting dolls or even jeans. Oh well. Got a bit of groceries though and that was good.

Out for my walk on another nice sunny day. Have to see if the rain arrives by this evening or tomorrow morning.

Also got ambitious last afternoon and cleaned the stove top and changed sheets.

No rain here, but NoCal is scheduled to get some. I'll be checking the US Drought Monitor to see if their situation improves. However, this is still a la Niña year, so the drought may continue through the normally rainy/(snowy) season.

That could happen Kiki.

Right now still dry and bright out but the clouds could start rolling any time and then the rain.
